As a Brazilian, I can say that one of the most debated issues within the country is the increasingly early departure of our best players to European clubs. There, they are molded to perform specific tactical roles, losing the traits that traditionally define Brazilian football. In the late 90s, players would transfer abroad between the ages of 23 and 26. Today, it's almost a miracle if they reach 20 while still playing in Brazil. The top athletes now play almost the same style of football, concentrated in five major European leagues, characterized by a highly physical and tactical game. It's worth noting that there has always been tactics and physical preparation in Brazilian football, but the difference used to be the dribbling and creativity. With today’s football concentrated in about 20 major European teams, Brazilian players who go there have become system players, lacking the ability to decide matches as they once did.

Funny enough, as a Brazilian born in 82, I lived through all of these years and the media would crash the Brazilian National Team ALL THE TIME! Rivaldo? Cafu? Man, these were always extremely criticized on every game... Brazil did not easily qualify to the 1994 and 2002 WCs, even if we won them... These teams were always under a lot of pressure! In fact, Brazil reached their bottom in the 2001 Copa América went we lost to HONDURAS in the quarter finals...

As you said, people are ignoring the fact that it has been at least a generation since Brazil last produced an elite playmaker like Kaka or Ronaldinho. You can have all the viniciuses, rodrygos and raphinhas you want, if they don't get service (a good playmaker behind them) they won't do anything. Not to mention that brazilian coaches were simply left behind tactically consistently and individual play just won't cut it anymore

Guys i´m brazilian and i can explain why our national team play like shit today. The main reason is that the Agents of most brazilian players dictate the squad for the brazilian teams and also the national team. In Brazil unfortunately there´s this culture of people trying to get monetarily advantage among others. We still produce really good players, in every city of this country, but most of then don´t have a agent and they simply can´t make it to professional

The Ajax team of that time was even better, but PSV was amazing with Ronaldo and Nilis. Interesting as well, is that Ronaldo said that Nilis is favorite partner in the attack of everybody. The intervieuwer was shocked. Brasil, and Brasilian football is special. Like the football from The Netherlands. Unique. The best is that they keep playing in there own style, despite of winning or losing. For me the most special player i have seen play is Ronaldo, el Phenomeno. I think it’s probably a societal thing which has impacted their football factory. A Portuguese buddy of mine lived in Brazil from 2015 to 2018 and he says the football culture is mirrored by the change in how daily life is and kids don’t seem to care like they used to. Maybe exposure to other sports or activities is the reason. It’s sad to see. Neymar is also the poster child for this. Not the cause but his career personifies that

I can imagine this. I've only been to Brazil once myself about 7-8 years ago but I've got a fair few Brazilian friends in London and from what I can tell, Brazil is a country that has recently become significantly richer quite recently. Access to the internet, to video games, Netflix and the various trappings of basically a modern Western society have started to take hold. The days of the kids having nothing to do but play football in the street have genuinely faded away a bit, so you don't have this 'ideal footballing country' where you had a massive population, huge football culture, nothing else to really distract the up-and-coming kids but just enough capital and infrastructure to run decent academies and maintain good quality coaching.

well for me I think the opposite. I think that they were too stubborn with that old style of brazilian players, doing unnecessary dribbling, or trying to dribble the whole. The level has increased. Relying only on dribblers won't make you win games. They're still very useful. But now it's just a part that you need to win. You need good midfielders that can find unseen passes and can defend. You also need a good defense, quick and can play with the ball. Fullbacks who are complete, they can defend, provide assist and runs. And a good tactic

Argentina has not been as dominant ad you claim. It took them 36 years to win another world cup .There good performances have mainly been as a result of the extra ordinary talent of Messi and also the brilliance of Dimaria who has been prone to injury .When Dimaria got injured in the 2014 world cup semi finals, the burden was solely Messi to carry the team against a very formidable German side and they ended up loosing to Germany in extra time.

@@Wyvernvzx as a Brazillian our perception was that 2022 was a better team, because we were more stacked... In 2018 outside de first 11 + Ederson there was no one else that good and Neymar was returning from injury (we also had Jesus on a terrible form, the worst number 9 the brazillian national team ever had on 22 WC so far, since he was the only one that didn't scored a single goal)

@@luccavalentinw.fiorini2302 i get what you mean tbf but imo when you look at the players from 2018 who didn't play in 2022 (firmino, coutinho, douglas costa, marcelo augusto) and then their replacements (vini jr, rodrygo, richarlison, antony, militao) you see a clear difference in quality and that combined with the fact that the remaining players were in much better form in 2018 (neymar, thiago silva, casemiro ect) on paper the 2018 team would be better but you're right though context matters like how neymar was returning from a injury

It's not a talent issue. Brazil has mediocre coaching. There is no elite Brazilian manager. A lot of Brazil's best managers would be middle tier in a country like Argentina. Just look at the best coaches coaching in Brazil Serie A. They're not even Brazilian. Brazil needs to hire someone like Abel Ferreira from Palmeiras, if they can. But Brazil has too much pride in hiring Brazilian-born managers. Making the World Cup is far more important.

Funny comment, Neymar is actually the main symbol of this failed generation, but instead of chosing him you put Endrick in the thumbnail who barely began his carrer, and is far from being one of the players underperforming in the national team (even Vini Jr. would make more sense). If anything he's the one who simbolizes the Brazil's hopes to return to the top, not Neymar.

Brazilian here, for us, one of the reasons of this decline is the celebrity status. The players today, have so many millions of followers and millions on their bank account, for them, doesn't matter if they win or not. If they lose, they just say "next time we try again" ... This isn't the winner mentality they should have. Their mentality is weak, they always have an excuse to play bad. Neymar is one of the worst things that happened to us, he is weak and never recognize his mistakes, and his mentality is influencing the other players. The truth is, in Brasil, Neymar is considered a fraud, CBF is a cancer, and the people has 0 identification with the national team. (i tried my best in english right now 🤣)

As an Argentinian, Brazil isn’t in decline. Not even close nor in my lifetime at least. When Neymar was the star of Brazil, especially when Brazil stopped calling up Ronaldinho and kaka in the early 2010s. Many were saying Brazil was in decline in that decade. Now that Messi-Ronaldo aren’t irrelevant, many Brazilians now are giving Neymar the credit he should’ve gotten. Brazil wool always have a great abundance of players left and right. Even at theyre worse stage, they have always been better than Argentina post Maradona. Argentina to be fair was overhyped for many years, and it wasn’t until Messi came along and then put Argentina at the same level as Brazil, Germany, Spain, and Italy in the 2010s. Brazil will be back I’m sure soon. I really would like to see Neymar win the WC, so he can finally say we are in the Neymar era of greatness.

Argentina only shines under Goat. Messi was Argentina's first player to reach a World Cup final since Maradona. Compared to that, the situation in Brazil is not bad. Look at Italy, how far they have fallen. now people don't even mention it. Germany also in decline, Doesn't Brazil have the highest average performance in the World Cup?

In the 1998 final France was not ‘the underdog ‘. They played on homeground and also had Zidane. The Brasilian team was in turmoil because Ronaldo had suffered from an epileptic fit just the day before the final - so he was unable to play welll as is perfectly clear by watching that final.
