I'm older enough to remember when colour TV was in its infancy (early 1950s!) and the different systems being touted in Europe a few years later. I was brought up living over the family TV shop and worked there for a while. All the TVs I worked on were only 405 line monochrome but I haven't owned a TV myself for over 50 years. There were mnemonics to remember 3 of the systems. NTSC was Never Twice the Same Colour (I did see a video of goldfish where the gold didn't keep up with the fish) SECAM was System Essentially Contrary to the American Method (the French like their individuality) PAL is obviously Perfection At Last! Not into FPV myself but several of my club mates are and I keep being tempted but I think I would prefer fixed wing rather than MR. Good video that I'm sure will clarify the reasons for incompatibility if you're not aware of the differences in video standards.

+Belper Flyer Great post - thanks for that! FPV on fixed wing (with lots of height and a balanced prop) can be very fun! Happy flying!

the lower resolution of NTSC is why HD took off so much in America, also that is why their older programs like Friends etc were so colourful to make up for the lesser clarity

Hi Painless. I have a question: I read that there exists a PAL standard called PAL M whose number of visible lines is 480 rather than the regular PAL 576 visible lines. Are our FPV cameras using the regular PAL (576 visible lines) or the special PAL M standard (480 visible lines) ? Thanks.
@Painless3602 жыл бұрын
I dont know. What I can say is that there significantly more vertical height in the PAL image, see the difference in the space for OSD elements when configuring an OSD in something like betaflight or INAV... happy flying!
@paulbizard34932 жыл бұрын
@@Painless360 Thanks anyway. If you see a difference then it's the regular PAL (625 horizontal lines but only 576 visible).

That would be my guess too... happy flying

So which fpv camera should i choose PAL or NTSC
@Painless3606 жыл бұрын
Choose the one that's the same as the other kit you use. Happy flying!

So if using the DJI goggles with an analog video receiver bolted on it, then it is the video receiver that needs to be able to handle pal or ntsc, the goggles can then display the image regardless of what kind of signal the external analog video receiver is decoding?
@Painless3602 жыл бұрын
Yep, that's what it should do.. Happy flying

Question on the subject. Why do all my FPV Cameras state 700 lines of resolution? If the image is to be uncropped when transmitted as PAL, 625 would be better? I'm seeing 75 cropped lines?

If my drone came with a PAL camera and i want to replace it, do I have to put another PAL camera or will NTSC work?
@Painless3607 жыл бұрын
+jrmendoza7 a lot of fpv kit will detect and change to the right format. Personally I would replace like with like. Best of luck!

is the framerate noticable in latency ? or does it feel the same when flying ?
@Painless3608 жыл бұрын
+Michael Schuster I only fly PAL so tricky for me to comment but I'd expect any would difference would be way too fast to the average human to even detect..

+Painless360 the human eye recognizes around25 frames per seconds higher framerates are nice but you dont need them

I actually had chance to live in countries using different image standard but i always prefered PAL over NTSC. Also my experience with NTSC in FPV has always been a succession of troubles...
@lebasson8 жыл бұрын
Why is that? Does it have to do with combining incompatible systems or something else? Curious about what troubles you had because I'm considering stepping over to NTSC for the faster framerate.

That's not completely true. PAL and NTSC are ways of encoding colour. The different sync frequencies are commonly associated with PAL and NTSC because there are very rarely any deviations. 525 lines (480i) at 59.94Hz is used with the M and J systems as well as PAL-60. 625 lines (576i) at 50Hz is used with systems B, G, D, H, I, K, L, M and N.
