I raced in 10th scale and 8th scale ebuggy as a middle and high schooler with parents who weren't in the hobby and I have some definite tips to help. The first is to always run dual shorty packs even if you are able to run a brick in an ebuggy. If you're forced to go to 10th scale only, all your 4s packs become useless. Also, you can always use your batteries for both cars which can always help in a pinch. On the same note, really take care of your batteries. Get a voltage tester and always make sure they are not draining too much while practicing. Always balance charge them when you get home from the track, and try your best not to charge them right after using them. Another big thing is tires. You don't just want the best tires for the track, you want the ones that will perform the best for the money. For example, I ran ebuggy at indyrc in texas and the fastest tires were hole shots. But I never ran those, because for me, I'm not gonna buy tires that last one night of racing. I would run fugitives, which had slightly less grip, but were incredibly long lasting. This rings the same for carpet racing especially if you are doing it more for fun, you can use tires a whole lot longer, and it definitely helps to figure out which tires rely less on delicate tread. Finally, make sure you are always talking to people who are not only more experienced, but who are more involved in the hobby. A lot of these dudes at the track will throw out a set of tires with plenty of fine tread for practicing and sometimes they will let you buy a whole bunch of them for like 50$. These guys will also tell you the trending setups, allowing you to buy a single set of springs or oil instead of searching for 5$ worth of shock/diff oil at a time.

One suggestion I'd like to make... unlike 1/10th scale where RTR models are generally not suitable for racing without extensive tuning and modifications, as the design specs for entry-level/basher cars are typically too different from race cars due to the surfaces being run on, 1/8th RTRs can actually be quite competitive - in fact, a completely stock TLR Tuned Typhon RTR won Sportsman E-Buggy at JConcepts Beast of the East Triple Crown. So, RTRs other than the Traxxas Sledge and the non-TLR Tuned ARRMAs would be a good starting pick. Granted, that does mean you're limited in choices, as besides the TLR Tuned Typhon the only other options are a Kyosho MP10e Readyset, HoBao Hyper VS2 RTR or Serpent SRX8-E RTR. Still, you can typically get one of these for less than you'd spend on even kitting out a used roller on a budget, and the Serpent and HoBao cars are actually cheap enough that you can get into 1/8th scale for less than you would spend on a competitive 1/10th scale car.

Any tips for truggies? ~700 for a roller is rough... seems even more expensive than when I was in the hobby (got the itch to get back into it)

@@hansyolo8277 Serpent 811 Cobra-T RTR or HoBao Hyper SSTE RTR or Roller. There's far fewer budget options for truggies that aren't dedicated bashers. Even so, in general truggies are going to be more expensive than buggies.

@@hansyolo8277 The Vorza Truggy Flux is another good choice, and now that I think about it I'm surprised I forgot it. Usually I'm all over HPI, I'd really like to see them get back to their glory days. If your local track runs nitro the Vorza 4.6 is actually cheaper than the Flux and might be an even better option if you're willing to put in the effort.

Man, I must cheap out way more than most. I run a JX Ecoboost in my Tekno 48.3. And it's already proved itself after a couple skatepark sessions. Same for my batteries (Zeee packs, and even a couple of my local fast guys run them). And they seem to have more punch than my Gens Ace packs.

If you want a new buggy and you are starting out then the Hobao Hyper VSE is a very decent option and they are very very durable.

I'm working on a budget 1/8 nitro build recently as I'm about 2 hours away from my capital city that actually runs regular 1/10 events. I bought some crusty old hot bodies lightning 2 buggy. An old RTR by the looks of things, with JIS screws, lol. Sure it'd be easier to buy a Kyosho thing-a-ma-jig, but I'd rather go HB as a D216 fanatatic (and recent Tekno SCT410SL owner). Of course I looked at the latest HB RTR offering and wtfed at the non-adjustable turnbuckles.

witha new track opening near me within the next 2 months. Would the new preorder losi 8ight 1/8 buggy be a good option? Basically have to order everything part wise anyway no local shops. trying to avoid building another kit right out of the gate in 1/8th scale. have had luck with losi in the past is why i was eyeing it,

So ive been racing for about 2 weeks now and ive come to the point where i need new tires and found out how ridiculously expensive they are. My question is what are a good pair of cheap tires that are good for beginner racing? Im trying to avoid the 60+ per set if possible but if i do have to do that id want something that lasts as long as possible. Honestly this may be a good video to make as its one of the most expensive and important thing in the hobby it looks like.

Silly saying "buget 1/8th" a buget means 1/14th ish. Nothing cheap about 1/8th electric (especially batteries) and its not like in 2009 6s $300. And forget used junk. 1/8th needs way more money and waaay more space. Bigger is not for "buget builders".
