Making cable connections by just twisting wire and using tape is like putting the wheels on your car without tightening the nuts up. You might get away with it once or twice but it's a recipe for disaster.

Just iso-tape that entire section of the cord and give it a nice massage or a couple taps if it acts up.

The other side while the pigtail splicing of the conductors yielded a good mechanical connection, these are very small gauge conductors 24-26 still needs to be soldered to make a good electrical connection. Or the use of small crimp closed end connectors w/o soldering.

You forgot to say that it wouldnt work if the speakers arent even driven by an amplyfierbecayse phones dosent have enough power to support your speakers (if the speaker has an amplifier inside of it then it should work)
