We have one of these down at Sea World San Diego. Absolutely stunningly beautiful to ride, the pure amount of water and joy I got out of it was worth the price of admission to the park. But the main question about the river rapids goes unanswered: does the rapids special element make the boats go faster. I.E. does including more rapids (track piece) in the river rapids (ride) yield more rapid riding?
@MarcelVos2 жыл бұрын
I've never thought about that but I tested it and it does go slightly faster on rapids. It's only a small difference though, if you remove all the rapids from the river rapids in Six Flags Holland the ride time goes from 1:59 to 2:02.

@james64ibm2 жыл бұрын
@@MarcelVos That's actually not the whole truth. The boats go about 15% faster on rapids than in normal water, but more importantly, they KEEP their speed much longer (basically by a factor of two) after going down a drop, so you can reduce the ride time substantially while giving the ride much more flow (pun intended). Personally, I basically only use rapids instead of normal water nowadays for this reason.

Love your content, Marcel! Question: Do you ever intend to do a video about RCT's way of storing sprites? I always wondered whether rides like the River Rapids store guest sprites specifically for the round boat from each angle or whether it uses a database of sprites that are shared between rides and so on. Or do you think that is not what this channel is about?
@CouchPotator2 жыл бұрын
oooo, I'd like to know too!
@notarealname18812 жыл бұрын
Each ride type has its own set(s) of guest sprites. There are guest sprites for every angle of the ride vehicle. In the case of the river rapids, the game takes advantage of the rotational symmetry of the car - you only need to store enough frames for 1/4 of a rotation, then loop that animation four times for a full rotation. The spinning wild mouse stores a full 32 frame spinning animation for every possible vehicle position, so it has a lot of sprites. Guest sprites are drawn on top of the ride vehicle, so parts of the guest sprite that should be hidden by parts of the ride vehicle need to be blanked out of the sprite, otherwise it would look wrong. Therefore, guest sprites generally cannot be reused from one ride to the other - although there is an amusing bug with one of the expansion railway cars, where they reused the peep sprites from the base game covered cars, resulting in the peeps being headless. Guest sprites generally consist of a pair of guests - so for a ride vehicle which can take four passengers, there will be two rider sprites for every vehicle sprite. The only exception is cars which can only take a single rider.

i always felt like rapids and flume should have access to each other's pieces - i mean rapids only has tight turns and flume only has medium ones :/ Very helpfull video tho, this is one of rides i struggle with the most, length was not something i thought about as being big problem but clearly that is where i always go wrong.

Now that I think of it, I wish all water rides had access to diagonal track pieces. The River Rapids could’ve at least had small curves instead of tiny, but Open RCT2 tricks mitigate this.
@DeathKontrol2 жыл бұрын
On the micro design I would imagine it's better to build the station, turn, drop, then all the special elements after the drop so that the rafts move faster overall and the ride has higher throughput.
@edfreak90012 жыл бұрын
I kinda love deep dive analysis on the mechanics of games people wouldn't really think about. There's not much competitive potential in RCT games (at least i'd imagine) and it's probably not hard enough to really necessitate minmaxing this hard, but that almost makes it more interesting to see what fine details there are regardless.

I did notice in the closing montage that when the boats go down a hill followed by an equally tall hill, the boats are able to glide up the typically slow lift hill off of their own momentum. Perhaps the simple fix is to go down then up instead of up and then down, which is the mindset of building a typical roller coaster.
