Some of us are naturally in the habit of charging low as well due to RCT1 having a mix of ride and park entrance fees, so if you adjusted based on feedback that prices were cheap or too expensive, you'd naturally settle into that bracket possibly without even knowing you could go higher on rides of entry was free.

These days, I almost exclusively make block-braked coasters. It takes ages to optimise, but it's so satisfying to see the timing get to the point where a train arrives every time one leaves, and trains never stop on the layout. I've found separate exit stations really help with this. Also it's fun watching all the trains cascade and stop in the middle when the ride breaks down; That's another thing you have to account for - every block has to accommodate an empty train starting there from a standstill. I just wish block brakes could have a custom speed. Now that we have the new save format, hopefully it comes soon!
@sabretooth19972 жыл бұрын
Agree. I try to get realistic layouts and sometimes get burned in scenarios for it, but whatever.

Sloped to flat chainlift pieces also count as block sections. I often add a single chainlift piece to the top of the second or third drop as a "checkpoint." The goal is to never actually have trains stop at these (have to make sure you put the right minimum waiting time) but they allow you to run more trains closer together.

Fun fact: Rollercoaster Tycoon 1 had two separate types of wooden rollercoasters. 1: The basic "Wooden Coaster" had either standard 4 seater cars, or 4 seater reversed (Both with max 7 cars), and had access to the vertical loop and water splash 2: The "Wooden Twister Coaster" is the one with articulated trains (Max 10 cars) that came out in the Added Attractions expansion pack, which had access to steep turns and spirals unlike the basic wooden coaster. Speaking of the reversed trains, there’s another (pair of) roller coaster(s) at Kings Island called the Racer, which is a mirrored pair. For a good while, they ran one with forward-facing cars and one with rear-facing cars. I think they are now both forward-facing now but it was lot of fun to ride. Kings Island’s Beast itself is, of course, the Mac Daddy of wooden roller coasters. In my view on the Wooden coaster. The awesome looking supports and structure are both it's best and worst feature. It occupies a lot of visual space. This is good because it's pretty. It's also bad because it distracts from other pretty stuff and blocks other pretty stuff. One of my favorite things to do is to have a nice weaving section to rail through super fast boosting average speed, followed by some bunny hops. I especially like ones that use two hills like The Beast in order to boost the length to a nice full 5 minute maximum. With proper design you can make amazing excitement stats, and look good doing it. For more compact designs the loop is great for driving up the excitement rating when you don't have enough room for the hill count necessary to get great stats otherwise.

One big thing about wooden coasters is that I feel like the supports make giant walls so I only want to build them at the edges of parks. Also I feel bad building stuff under wooden coaster track, where as steel track I feel fine building things under and in the middle of parks
@nthgth2 жыл бұрын
I agree, the supports can be visually obstructive. Possibly the only negative thing to say about this coaster type, but I can't even say that because it's part of the coaster's wonderful, iconic look
@rmac3217 Жыл бұрын
I like that though for extreme heights, which is more realistic as steel coasters in real life have those H shaped supports for really high sections to prevent sway.

Congrats on the sponsor!! I just wanted to say that I haven’t touched RCT2 since I was a child but I still love watching your videos. Your channel is one of my go to examples of how it’s just enjoyable to watch passionate people talk about things they care about in detail.

I rode Son of Beast at King's Island back when it still had the loop, and it was a terrible experience. Wooden coasters are generally a rough ride, but that one I remember being particularly bad. The loop itself (which was made of steel) was the only smooth part of the ride. They eventually removed the loop, and a few years later tore the whole thing down, and replaced it with a steel hanging coaster called Banshee.

I rode the Son of the Beast at King's Island. Going into the loop makes your neck snap back pretty hard and they adjusted it multiple times to try to reduce there whiplash, before giving up and closing it indefinitely.
@rmac3217 Жыл бұрын
They made the loop too circular then. There’s something to do with forward momentum that does better in an upside down water drop shape, when you’d think it would be opposite. They figured that out with the first looping ‘coasters’ which were weird looking 1 seater carts hauled up to one height with horses, then there’d be an incline on the other side as well.

The giant wooden coaster in the park Karts and Coasters is my favorite pre-existing coaster in the game

I love the wooden coaster. I always wait until I'm around halfway through a scenario, when my park is built up, my loan is paid off, and I have plenty of cash to throw around. Then it's time for an elaborate wooden coaster design.

Wooden coasters are near to my heart. My first "real" coaster (I.E. not one of the little kiddy ones you see at carnivals) was the Giant Dipper at the Santa Cruz Boardwalk. It instilled in me a love of coasters and even over 100 years later, it's a timeless classic.

In all of the Wooden Coasters I built (~50 of them) I never built a Loop just because It felt weird and 3 of them were recreations from around my area (One of them got Burned down in 2022 by the park) Also the Wooden Coaster has my least favorite train with the "Stage Coaches"

The stage coaches look dumb with all the support, should have made a different design with thinner supports.

I grew up ridding the actual Rolling Thunder rollercoasters quite a bit, it's neat to hear that somone else also enjoyed those rollercoasters by using them in RCT! They are gone now but were always a fun ride.

Yeah, had to look through the comments for this as it was a real dueling rollercoaster at Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey. I know there were other coasters most likely that reversed the coaster facing but to celebrate the 100th year of roller coasters in the USA, it became Rednuht Gnillor and had reverse facing cars that year.

Marcel, something I've always been curious about. To calculate the stats for a ride (when in test mode), does the ride *actually* have to go through the test scenario to figure out these stats, or does the game calculate them immediately and hide them until the circuit is complete? I was thinking "why does it have to wait? Can it just calculate it based on known values?". Just a thought.
@kiister81262 жыл бұрын
great question, I hate having to wait every time for the stats to show up so you can decide the ride price and open it for the public lol
@MarcelVos2 жыл бұрын
The stats will be different depending on the weight of the train, which depends on how many guests are on the train, so for that reason alone it does have to actually test. The rides where that doesn't have an effect, like the merry-go-round, do give you the stats immediately.
@zuthalsoraniz67642 жыл бұрын
Since the stats depend on what the train does during the ride (so e.g. testing loaded vs empty trains will yield slightly different stats), it probably does have to go through one full simulation cycle in order to calculate them. Now, especially on a modern machine it likely could do the simulation at a greatly accelerated speed in order to give you the results immediately, but a) that would require additional programming effort and b) where is the fun in that? I just wish you could have it simulate different coaster loading levels in testing mode.
@N0Fumar2 жыл бұрын
Understood to both of you, thanks! I was just thinking "shouldn't it know what an empty vs full car weighs and then be able to just simulate it extremely fast?". I wonder if that's something anyone on the Open RCT2 team has ever thought of implementing. Would probably be a fair amount of coding and fuss.
@zuthalsoraniz67642 жыл бұрын
@@N0Fumar My favourite solution would be to just be able to test a "full train" - IRL rollercoasters are tested with dummies that simulate the mass of passengers in every seat to test the highest likely load case.

I love building a good wooden coaster, especially with articulated trains as well. Ride guide suggestion maybe Launched Freefall and Roto Drops? What are stat penalties for height/speed? Why is the prefab Escape Hatch the best blend? Etc

Just to be silly you could build a normal wooden roller coaster backwards, use the reverse facing trains and then do reverse incline shuttle mode
