In this #metalmonday edition of #thedailydoug, I'm returning to the music of Slayer with one of their more prominent and famous songs Raining Blood. This was a first time listen for me, and I must admit that I'm much more receptive and practiced at hearing music like this than I was a few years ago. I think that the riff, vocals, percussion, and solos are all top notch...no wonder it's a band and audience favorite all these years later. Enjoy!

hey, I'm a punk drummer from uh the middle east. Thanks for this reaction! Lombardo is a legend and this double time beat is our rudimentary drum beat since the early 80s, and the way he does it in this song is what's considered 'not cheating' in my mind, meaning playing all 8th notes on the cymbal and still keeping it so furious and 'leaning forward' giving the feeling of a chase instead of just laying it flat on the beat. I think it would be cool to see your reactions to some Punk classics, it's a genre often overlooked by classic-heads but I think it can be a cool side quest. I recommend the Dead Kennedys' "Holiday in Cambodia" and Zero Boys "New Generation".

I think what you were critiquing about the drums was deliberate. Jeff loved to embrace the craziness and chaotic side of metal yet had a natural gift for a hook. So he probably encouraged Dave to go crazy on the drums. 1986 was a great year for metal. Slayer, Iron Maiden (Somewhere In Time) and Metallica (Master Of Puppets) released what I regard as their best albums that year. Also, my 2nd favourite Megadeth album, Peace Sells... But Who's Buying, came out that year.

I´ve listenend to Slayer from the beginning ( yes, I´m that old!), and I always loved the guitarplay and Vocals of Slayer. But even more the drums (when played by Dave Lombardo). The drums where always a class of its own. I grinned when you named the name of the bandmembers and i really loved it when you stopped the song to listen to the drums again. Dave Lombadro is so recognizable. I highly recomend to use the terms "Dave Lombardo -- Postmortem/Hate Worldwide -- Big 4 Yankee Stadium" or "Dave Lombardo -- War Ensemble -- Yankee Stadium" to search here on KZbin and see his Performance - incredible! By the way; I really love your style analyzing the songs- not interrupting more then necessary. Keep on going :-) , ruben [Typographical errors are caused by Glühwein and are seasonal]

Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman are/were atheists, who wrote about Satan and Hell a lot in the early days, because that's what you did in extreme metal in the '80s. Partly shock value, partly rebellion. Tom Araya, the vocalist and bassist, is actually a practising Christian. If you get a chance, he co-wrote the lyrics to the song Divine Intervention, which is probably the most he's ever hinted at his faith in the context of Slayer.

4:30 that's why they had a period in the 80/90's they use to loose track of the beat live. A friend of mine wasn't musician and he used the analogy of being on acid and be all over the place lol Obviously, they improved over the years. I saw them in mtl in the 90's (with Hanneman 🤘) the performance was damn good. The late shows on KZbin confirm this.
