I actually remember Machinima back in the day when they were not only the biggest gaming channel but the biggest channel in general. What they did was, they would sign/sponsor a handful of content creators at first and offer them some dollars to become a Machinima Partner, but the contract they had to sign was filled with a lot of poorly worded requirements and loop holes. For example, they had to favourite at least 10 Machinima videos a day (they would upload at least 100 videos a day), as back then it would show what videos you favourited to your subs. This means Machinima piggybacked off the hard work of real content creators to cement their status on youtube, something they're still doing today:(
