A truly great custom rifle is the sum of many small refinements. One of the first things we do when building on Winchester Model 70 actions is to reshape the tang. It's an alteration some won't even notice but it will add to the overall elegance of the rifle. This short video shows the process.

I didn’t see a lip cut in at the end of the tang. I wonder if they utilize a metal insert in the stock to better accommodate the recoil and better protection from splitting into the wrist. That’s a common practice for African rifles like the Wesley Richards and others.

Model 70's have a square on the bottom of the tang that is centered around the rear action screw hole. Atleast the model 70 CRPF variant made from 2004 to 2008 does. I used off of a 7wsm model 70 coyote to build the 7rsaum I built for unlimited class 1000yd benchrest but that particular model 70 variant was the best design out of all of them and a lot of practical thinking went into it. Obviously whoever did had to be a competition shooter of some kind because your average engineers for factory rifle companies aren't smart enough to design a true control round feed that uses a sliding plate extractor instead of a Mauser claw and flat flush lugs all so you can easily single load on a bench, as well as going back to the mechanical blade ejector instead of a fixed plunger in the face that constantly puts pressure on one side of the case. Also that particular action does not have standard Winchester coarse barrel threads. The threads are even finer than a rem 700. Through me for a loop when I wrenched the factory barrel off of it.
