My 7yo son has wanted a hamster for years (I think largely because of hamster TikTok/KZbin), but we have been renovating our house so we kept telling him no. We finally compromised and said we'd get a fish, but once we got to the pet store yesterday my wife and I caved, read the care guide they had, and bought a dwarf hamster, a habitat, and all the accessories (yes, including a ball and a bunch of tunnels). Then we got home, found your KZbin, and today I'm returning the habitat and most of the accessories we bought and running to Home Depot to pick up some melamine and acrylic to build a bigger, deeper habitat for Comet. And my wife is ordering all new accessories from NiteAngel and sprays from Etsy. So our little hamster thanks you.

@yes Doing really well. Ended up using a glass reptile habitat we found on FB marketplace instead of building something, just to save a bit of money (though we cleaned and descented it thoroughly). We've started getting different materials for bedding and ordering sprays. She's super tame, so I've been picking her up without any problems for a while now but my kids are kind of just learning to handle her. And they make new little cardboard mazes every weekend for her to play in while I do the habitat cleanings.

@@Bl3116 you can to to a lot of stores such as walmart, target, home depot, etc. and get some sort or mesh and cut parts of the top of the bin off and duct tape (on the top) the mesh to the bin. make sure the bin is a suitable size for hamsters!!

Oh my gosh I relate to that first tiktok so much! My longhair syrian Pumpkaboo came into my life because he very clearly had escaped from someone else. I saw him running around outside in my apartment complex at night on the way back from getting my laundry. I thought he was a rat at first! I caught him with a carrot and tupperware just to get him out of danger. After asking everyone, checking with the property managers, and posting on next door trying to find his owner, nobody came forward to claim him. I had no idea how to take care of a hamster so I actually followed your videos to find out how to set up an enclosure for him and feed him correctly! I've had him for almost six months now and love him so much. But he absolutely is a little escape artist and we went through progressively bigger enclosures with different types of enrichment till we got a configuration he decided he liked lol.

I think TikTok is definitely the platform I see the most hamster abuse/neglect or just uneducated owners in general! I am a small, growing content creator and I see it constantly unfortunately. 😢 I get a lot of “hamsters are small and don’t need that” and it’s frustrating. I love the education side though! Thanks for sharing these as I think it’s important.

@@existentialnoodles My dad had a snake which unfortunately passed recently, and when he was younger (the snake lived 30 year) his dad (my grandfather) made a custom enclosure. Where I live it can get kinda cold so we installed a new heater where the snake’s heater users to be. I wish I could give you an answer but I can’t, I would recommend like renovating and IKEA cabinet or something, or, if your budget is higher, maybe getting one custom made or getting some wood or something from a local shop and building one 💕

Thank you for that information about a hamster being dead or "hibernating". My hamster (in my profile pic) passed recently and I really struggled with being afraid that I had buried him and he wasn't dead. He definitely was very stiff though, so it puts my mind at ease knowing I didn't accidentally bury my hamster alive.

Many people fall for the myth of hamsters hibernating, but in reality it's not that common unless your home is absolutely freezing and at that point they would go into torpor and without help of warming up quick enough they would still pass away.

Unfortunately TikTok and KZbin Shorts are full of Hamsters and other small animals being mistreated. I always report those kinds of videos, but I don’t think it changes what gets put in the feed. It’s especially bad on Shorts, I’ve seen some pretty traumatizing things that are going to scar me for years and KZbin doesn’t seem to care.

@@hi-zp8db unfortunately, people like watching animal videos, but hate learning anything about them. I often see people fight for their own ignorance against comments with information. It's as if their right to not be informed about things should have been protected above anything else, and putting their immediate feelings (of not wanting to be bothered) above animal welfare as a whole. I just don't understand it, but people have a visceral reaction against new information.

One time my Hamster got lost, because he chewed at the Ventilation holes in the Plexiglas and made a hole big enough to escape (in One Night!!!)… I’ve searched for him for a week… I have two cats and thought they killed and ate him… 8 days later I saw him eating from one of the cat bowls, while my cats shared the other one… he was fatter than before… 3 or 4 months later we had to lay the Couch on the side, because on leg was lose… and over a hundred pieces of cat Good Fell out of a tiny hole and there was a big ass Hamster nest made out of parts of the inside of the Couch…

I know some other people have typed this, but thank you for going into detail about the hamster being dead or going into torpor. I keep my apartment 70-75F in temperature. My hamster recently passed away 2 days ago and I buried him at my boyfriend's house in his backyard. Even though I have read up on hamsters 'hibernating', I was still getting small panic attacks for the past 2 days thinking I may have buried him alive and suffocated him. I did not know that they go into torpor and not hibernation. Thank you so much, Victoria. I really needed that.

My hamster is in a 55 gallon tank and I have a thermometer in her cage. She loves to dig. My besties hates to dig and will throw the beding out if it's too much. We both have two different set ups. I made a power point about animal abuse for a school project and one of the slides was about hamster abuse, I found this story about this girl who filmed herself throwing her hamster at a wall until it died and posted the video along with a photo of the dead hamster on her instagram page. Hamster abuse is real and many people don’t know it. P.s. sorry if this was to gruesome or triggering.

i went to a wedding and the people who got married got a hamster for a wedding gift. they didnt have space for it and wanted to put it out to the woods because they didnt want it. so i asked if i could take care of it and they said yes, i was very happy because i already had a hamster and i knew everything a hamster needed so it lived a goodlife but the hamster has recently passed away.

I can gladly say my new pet ham was "living" in a ten gallon tank for about and hour or two while I made his bin cage. I would have already had it made, but it was a bit of a shock to get him. Also, anyone wondering it has over 540 sq ft, I just can't remember the exact amount. He's also a dwarf which doesn't help much, but he fits more comfortable than a Syrian for example

I just got my hamster, mabel a niteangel cage yesterday I found on Facebook marketplace which came with ALOT of stuff. Her cage has alot more enrichment now. But she chewed out of her bin cage and my mom found her on a sticky trap but she's fine now. Also there's 10.5 inches of bedding on one side and 8 inches on the other side. But tysm for making videos or my hamsters would both be in small pet store cages!❤🐹

Hey Victoria, I think it's just not right for someone to film a TikTok asking if my hamster dead or alive. It's not fair to the pet. My hamster recently passed away and I think it had just happened when I found her because she wasn't stiff at all. I was very sad. I had her for over a year and a half but I got her off a friend who couldn't take care of her anymore and they said that they had her for a year so she was well over 2 years. A few weeks ago, I got another Syrian hamster named May but she has a little tine of red in her eyes so that's cool. Love your videos.
