Reacting to my Durham University Results (2nd Year Engineering)

However, all is not lost.
I talk about this in the video but as it turns out, I CAN resit Thermofluids as a "first attempt." So if I get a 2:1 in that, I can still stay on the integrated masters course (assuming I still pass Mechanics which is capped at 40%).
It took me everything I had to admit I was struggling and I hope this video serves as a reminder to my future self to never let things get this bad again.
This channel paints a picture that my life is all fun and travel and everything is OK, but these last few months it really hasn't been.
If you need someone to talk to, the best people are always your family and friends. I can't thank them enough for the support in such a vital time, they've (just about) saved my grades :)
The reason why this video is so late is because I wasn't sure whether I should publish the video and I wasn't happy with some of the parts in it which I ended up taking out. I think it's fair to say my emotions were pretty raw at the time of filming this video on 21 June.
Furthermore, I wanted to wait for a time that I felt comfortable within myself that I could recover the situation I'd got myself into.

It's the worst feeling in the world to fail or be sacked. I failed my physics degree in '81 (by one module) but years later I finished my Open University degree with a 1st, and later became a lecturer in Computer Science. You can recover. Don't let the emotions keep you down.

The feelings you experienced really takes me back.... I failed 2 modules after first year. It scared the living daylights out of me and I literally changed my approach and ended up increasing my workload to avoid it... just keep going and its character building... you won’t feel it now but you will one day. This video just randomly showed up in my newsfeed, and I don’t really know what I want to say but I feel compelled to write something! I’ve just finished an MSc in physics at the University of Nottingham and I can relate to a lot of what you’ve said in your video, especially not really learning from lectures. I’m sorry that you don’t feel like you’ve received enough support from the uni/ the engineering department. I can’t really speak for the whole of UoN, but the staff at the physics department were always so eager to listen and help, and even tho I didn’t need the support all of the time, it was reassuring to know that it was available if/when I needed it - I hope you can find a similar resource at Durham. I haven’t watched any of your other videos but you seem very down to earth and like you understand what went wrong and how to resolve it for next time around, so I think you will be okay whatever the outcome ends up being. Thank you for taking the time to writing such a lovely comment. I definitely miss having the connection with teachers/lecturers in the way I did at college. Asking for help when I needed it was so easy then but it's like the complete opposite here. Maybe I'd feel the same way at other universities just because the course is delivered by lectures but it seems like the staff at Nottingham offer a lot more reassurance that support is available from the department if it is needed. I'd like to think things are under control now but we'll see... My first resit is just two weeks away now! Congratulations for finishing your MSc in physics btw, that's amazing!! And good luck for whatever you go on to do next :)

100% agree with needing more smaller teaching sessions as this is really what helps me learn. Just got to try and get groups together with friends etc which is easier said than done! Keep working on it mate, I’ve been in a difficult situation with uni and grades too but it gets much better!!

I’ve just finished yr13 and bingeing on these types of videos is my way of prepping for results day 😩 . Exactly, there's always a light at the end of the tunnel and you can't ace everything first time. Especially at university! There'll be plenty of ups and downs but way more ups I'm sure. And yes, you're right, I sat on the footage for weeks before editing it and then had my finger over the "publish" button for at least another day or so :)

Hey, I just saw this - I've been in your position before and I know exactly how you feel. I know that heart wrenching feeling when you open your results and they're not as you wanted, especially when it seems everyone around you is getting amazing results. I have also had difficulties with my mental health, not at uni, but in my last few years at school and it resulted in me not getting the grades I needed. Reaching out for help is by far the hardest step and good on you for doing that. I think it was a great idea of yours to share your experience, because by uploading this video you're showing other people in this position that they are not alone, everyone goes through difficulties as all of us are only human. I know that you've already done your resits, but I hope that your efforts paid off and that you're able to get the results you were hoping for! As someone who's also experienced mental health difficulties regarding my education and achievements, I know how horrible it is to sit exams when depression gets a hold of you during exam season. I'm a new subscriber and I'll be starting at Durham next year (Cuth's!) to also study engineering (so this video is only just mildly terrifying for me haha, I'm getting prepared to work my butt off to survive). Actually, I saw that you said further down that you wouldn't be the best person to give advice to those starting an engineering course this autumn, but if you have time, I'd really love it if you could! I feel that those who don't have the smoothest ride often have more to teach others.

i had a bad time with law years ago at durham and ended up changing degrees, got a first in the end. Struggled with mental health issues and self belief but I got through it and the important thing is just never to give up, sometimes life throws up surprises but all kinds of good can end up coming out of the rough times. good luck!

This came up in my feed after I watched my daughter's first year results Vlog. I respect you for putting this up and highlighting that sometimes things don't quite go to plan. A couple of disappointing results should not define you. It is how you manage to find a way forward that matters. At least you are asking for help which some young people find difficult to do. Good luck and hopefully you'll smash those resits. Whatever the outcome there is always a great life ahead even if it means taking a few steps back and selecting a slightly different path.

I feel like the education system is suited to one type of person. I can’t perform well in exams despite me working so hard all year round. I’m in collage, my mental health around exams was shocking this past year which then was shown through my results. More has to be done across the education system for mental health other wise more and more people who are worthy of the best grades possible and the best experiences in school or uni will have the opposite which can ultimelty result in a further downwards spiral! :( good luck with your future! Liam Bushrod thank you! I feel like as exams get harder, the support should increase... but it’s not! I asked my welfare teacher for some help and guidance.. I was appalled at her response. She basically told me to print off a picture of palm trees, hang it up on my desk when revising to ‘calm me down’ and remind me of summer. I was so annoyed! Anyway I’m glad I have had the summer to refresh myself and get into a better mindset to then excel next year!

Hi! I'm Matt and I'm about to go into my A2 year and I'm hoping to be a music student. I actually enjoyed this video- the montage in the middle I think was a great aspect of keeping the beet up of the video. The juxtaposition of the dread of opening the results (for some, the worst part of uni) but in the middle, you showing the best times you've had at uni- made it clear to the viewers that you are a normal person, who may have had downs, but also so many ups. It turned a video which could have been extremely depressing, to something which was so lovely to watch (that bit in the middle at least). It's also interesting to see how someone who is clearly as intelligent and bright as you, can still not have a 100% succeess rate in their academic life, and I think it is an important message to spread to people considering the amount of PERFECT "studytubers" are on this platform right now. This, along with the fact that you seem like a GENUINELY nice guy and has super editing skills, can really aid your channel to blossom should you wish it to. All the best, and do not change your style!!

Hey Matt, thank you so much for such a wonderful comment, it gave me such a lift last night during revision and put a huge smile on my face! I personally can't stay focussed watching videos with just a monologue so I wanted to include the montage just to break it up as you mentioned. But I was not expecting it to come out as well as it did.... I've watched is back so many times myself 😅 I'll always try to keep my videos fun to watch even if the main message isn't so. It just wouldn't be me if I did it any other way! I actually think many people have had that "perfect student" perception of me in the past - always expecting me to do well and pass easily - which in itself stacks a lot of pressure on my shoulders. So I guess part of me wanted to shake that off. And while my channel in general paints a very positive picture of my life, I am still human! I have also noticed the sudden rise of studytubers and so I wanted to let people realise that not all student KZbinrs are perfect and that not many students have a "perfect" experience at university in general. Sorry for the delay, I REALLY wanted to reply last night but I'd already spent enough time replying to all these comments and I needed to cram for the exam this morning! Everything mentioned in the video was about the engineering course so if you're interested in a different course at Durham, I'd recommend asking BOTH staff and students directly at the open day. Nice! I've just asked my 2nd year historian friend who said: "we have seminars that are anywhere between 6-12 people depending on which module it is. You can ask for a private meeting with a tutor to discuss essays etc as well though" Hope that helps!

Very raw video I am pretty sure you will do better in your resits. These grades do not reflect who you are. As long as you do your best that’s the most important thing to keep in mind.

Thanks Rossana, the resits did go better (this was last year now) but not quite good enough to stay on the masters course. I'm now supposed to have graduated but things haven't gone so well this year either. Hoping to figure everything out soon though, I'm just mega busy right now!

That is so true about what you said not being able to learn in lectures or large-sized classes. That is exactly the same for me, I just can't concentrate in lectures, even if I sit by myself at the front row. I'm very lucky in the lectures for my courses are recorded on video so I can watch them again later in my own time (and when I'm in a room by myself and can focus better). I struggled a lot in my first year and second year of university and I was doing Computer Science and even though I felt it in my heart that it wasn't right for me, I kept "forcing" myself to just keep doing it but that was obviously the wrong thing to do because I ended up suffering more, in terms of grades, and ESPECIALLY in terms of my mental illness and I even developed depression from it. I finally decided to change my course to Statistics, and although it's still hard and there are definitely days that I struggle to keep up, I'm doing so much better than before. I guess the thing to remember is that anything worth doing, like getting a degree or losing weight, takes time and an insane amount of work. Good luck!

Thank you! Yes our lectures are 150 strong so it's pretty rare to feel a connection with the lecturers or to maintain concentration. It just all makes it's hard to approach them later if I'm stuck and the one class of 40 session we have only happens once per module per term! Liam, Best of luck in your re-sits! I've been in worse than your situation, and I agree, more could be done to mentor struggling students. I failed 5 modules in Summer 2nd year Electrical Engineering (I failed 2 of the resits too 😅).. and then I failed 3rd year, and then I took a gap year to sort my life out! Overall 7 years it took me to complete a 4 year course! The good news... I graduated 6 years ago, and this peppered track record has never once come up in my professional life (never even questioned in an interview)! The job you end up with is more about the person you are, and your work ethic. My after-college employment wasn't even contingent on a grade, just that I passed and graduated! When you're in college, it can seem like the whole world is crashing down around you. All you have to do is keep your head down, and muddle through! Greener pastures await on the other side. I've gotta say, what you've been through definitely puts my year in perspective, but yeah it's hard to get my head round how my professional life will be a hard "reset" on my experience of university. I failed 4 Law modules at Durham and I’m also in my second year due to a whole slew of complications involving my mental health and struggle to keep on top of academics. I’ve managed to get all 4 approved to be taken as first attempts, fortunately. I have to agree that for most of the year, it felt like I was struggling alone, despite having a strong support structure with peers. In terms of academics, it was just too difficult to take the first step to admit you need help and also look for it as well. Lesson learnt, so I’m taking time off during summer to nail the resits (first one in 2 days) and just be more mindful of my health and well being. Cheers, Liam x

I just finished 1st year at Durham and my mental health is one heck of a lot worse for it, but I’m glad that people like you can be open about it on platforms like this so that (hopefully!) something can be done about it. KZbin put your video in my "recommended" list, and I've now looked at a few other of your vlogs, so I'd say you are on-track so far, doing all the right things to become an illustrious youtuber. Thinking of your likely target audience, perhaps you could provide some videos that won't need too much editing, but some preparation instead, on why you chose engineering, how you got a scholarship, why you chose Durham, and how you coped with a failed exam result and fought back to pass your resits (as I hope you will). This is one thing Jack Edwards, who you mentioned, did, and I found it worth watching (even though he's doing English Lit!). Another youtuber of interest in this respect was Simon Clark, who has just finished his PhD at Exeter. He also had lots of problems with programming. I'm a Computing Science graduate and know more effort needs to be given by schools and universities to teach this skill properly. As you have probably found, it is a vital aspect of so many studies these days (even English Lit), that it really needs to be mastered.

Thanks for such a thoughtful comment, it has certainly given me a lot to think about. Many of the videos I've made so far have just been for my own memories (without much thought for the target audience) purely because it has allowed me to practise the skills needed to create and edit videos while I don't have an audience to worry about. This year I've been experimenting a bit more with the type of videos I make, looking more specifically at the target audience and planning them out thoroughly (the DofE and MKBHD videos, for example). Based on the relative success this video has had, it's clear that there is a big audience for university advice type videos and while I'll still be making videos about my travels & family etc, you can bet there will be more videos like this one in the future, and certainly one that covers the points you mention above! I'll be sure to check out Simon Clark, programming has been taught so poorly so far on the course and it sounds like his advice could be really useful :) thanks again

Hi Liam, I did my undergrad and currently doing my PhD at Durham in Physics. Your experience in the last year sounds like it’s been really tough, but don’t let this ruin your thoughts about university, what you want to do in the future, or more importantly your course. As you said, university is hard, and the Durham support systems are awful. You should try getting involved with Talking Changes if you haven’t already, and the disability support service if you can. Make sure that they know everything you’re struggling with so they can try and get you the support (and exam exemptions!) you need, and always remember to be your own advocate. It sucks that you have to do that, but it’s the only way that you’ll be able to get the support. Also, try and have your college and department do a lot of the fighting for you, if you can, as that always takes a bit of a load off (but those services aren’t always the best). For next year, you might find it helpful to try and self-organise some smaller-group tutorials if you can, or try taking a bunch of friends to somebody’s office hours and just bombard them with questions if that’s how you feel you learn best. In Physics we have large workshops which seem to work quite well, and people seem to learn a lot from the direct interaction you’re able to have in those sessions. It sounds like in Engineering there isn’t as much of that, unfortunately. I hope your resits went well, and that you are happy continuing on with your degree. Remember that the key thing is to always take care of yourself first, and that you are not alone. If you do that, the academic stuff comes so much easier. I had a similar (but nowhere near as bad, and I never properly advocated for myself or seeked support like a bit of an idiot) during my third year. By my fourth year, I had managed to get on top of things a little more, and eventually graduated with a 1st. Things do get better.

Hey Josh, thank you for leaving such an thoughtful comment. I've met with disabilities support a few times and in general they've been very understanding but as I don't have a specific learning difficulty, what they can do is quite limited. However I will be attending special study skills sessions in September which should help. I've not heard of Talking Changes before but that's a great suggestion. I also like the idea of self-organising a weekly workshop. The problem classes just aren't useful as there's little interaction, they're too infrequent and I have no idea what's going on as a result. But having a group of people to go through stuff with each week would certainly be helpful, the main issue I've found is the coursework takes up so much time so maybe that could of help too. My first resit (thermofluids) was this morning and it went ok - not sure if I've hit the 60% mark as mentioned in the video though as one of the four sections I answered weakly. But regardless of what happens I just want to make next year as positive as possible and try to enjoy it a bit more :) Congrats on the first and good luck for the rest of your PhD

Great question! Somebody asked me that at the open day too (I did the solar car part of the talk for the open days this year apart from the most recent open days) and I told them my thoughts on the lack of small group support and the amount of programming we've had to do. As someone who needed a lot of support to get through A-levels and with no previous experience coding, this was a shock to the system. If you are good at learning independently with minimal resources then you'll be fine in general, and if you have experience coding that'll help lots. Outside of lectures it feels like you're on your own but I'm sure if you surround yourself with fellow engineers, you can all help and support each other. That's definitely something I wish I'd done as then the only person to motivate me outside of lectures is myself. There are "office hours" but these are normally one hour per week per lecturer for any student in your year to use. Not exactly very accessible! And the general 40-student "problem classes" are actually more like mini-lectures and happen once per lecture course per term! These are the things that you need to be asking when visiting universities for engineering, but make sure you get the student perspective as well as the staff perspective as the difference can be quite stark! Having said all that, I really don't want to discourage you from doing engineering because in general you can't go wrong - graduate job prospects are very good - especially from Durham. Durham uni itself is a safe environment as it's such a small city and the college system allows you can meet more people and get involved in more sports and societies. What I love about my uni is that we have one individual meeting with lecturers from each module scheduled each term and we can also ask any tutor for meetings to discuss coursework at anytime. There are also two people that specifically help with essays and they have drop in sessions once a week. We also usually have a seminar the week after a lecture where there's only 15/20 people in it and we go through the previous lecture and discuss it in more detail. I found that to be extremely helpful, cause I tend to zone out during lectures 😂 I don't know if you've done your resits already, but good luck if you haven't and I hope you get/got the results you want :)

I'm almost in the same position. But I have failed for 7 years. I couldn't go to classes (doing biochemistry and biology sciences) my life was a mess (not my fault) I guilt myself for that all this time and ended up with depression and panic attacks... Many of our tutors, some at Oxford and Cambridge, find tutoring online once a week a calming and rewarding experience and helps them to balance their intake and outflow of knowledge.

In my place there is a mix of UK honours system and a modified US GPA system (with a max of 4.3). My course is 4 years long. We got two GPAs, one for just course required modules and another for all modules (but mine is really similar in both) The cut offs are: (major only / overall) 1st - 3.6 / 3.4 2:1 - 2.85 / 2.7 2:2 - 2.15 / 2.0 3rd - 1.7 / 1.7 Both sides need to be met to obtain the class of honours. I started off at a very borderline 2:1 in my first term, but all modules will count in the degree classification in the end. The next three terms were steady at a mid 2:1, despite one screwed summer module, and for the most recent term I am looking at my highest ever term GPA if it goes well.

I feel that universities need to support students and this includes looking after their mental health. Students can be under a lot of pressure to perform with higher and higher workloads. There needs to be very good mentorship and this does not seem to be occurring in a number of universities. Lets face it both the government and students are paying an high price for universities to support them through their courses. The system needs an urgent review and actions to be taken.

Hey Soni - the resits for those exams did go well, just not quite well enough to stay on the MSc course so I dropped down to the BSc. It's hard for me to give general advice as everyone is different, but for me the course just wasn't structured in a way that I learn well in. We had no tutorial hours (smallest class size was 40) and heaps of coursework to do which took up a disproportionate amount of time for the marks it was worth. As a result I never was able to keep up with lecture content and always had to self-teach all of it over Easter before exams and that was never going to end well. So my advice would have to be this: do more research before choosing a university. Go to open days. Speak to current students. Ask all the dirty questions specific to the course you want to do. If I'd known a bit more about the course structure and the methods of delivery then I might've had second thoughts. Of course there's always going to be a significant element of self-learning at university, because... well, it's university, but I certainly was not prepared for the level at which was required for engineering at Durham. Who knows - it might've been the same story for me at any other university but all I know is I never really felt like I got into to any kind of study routine at Durham and consequently when things started going wrong, I had nothing to fall back onto and things spiralled FAST. Having said all that, there's always people who are willing to listen at university - be it friends, family back home, department staff or student support - and maybe if I'd been a bit more open a bit sooner, I might've been able to save my degree. However because they fit as many people on the course as possible to get the most money, my seminar classes have around 25 people in. It’s bullshit.

They went ok thanks :) you just have to look at companies that have internship schemes in America and apply - although probably best if you ask them if they take international students first! Then they'll probably do a video interview. Just a word of warning, the paperwork for working abroad is pretty extreme so make sure you're not organising it in the middle of exams (like I was!). The reason why they were so keen to have me is because I worked for them for a few weeks last summer, not in the USA. That gave me a much better chance of getting it this summer! Hope that helps

I'm in a situation where I have to perform with perfect scores on every signature. I'm a first-year student at the university, but somehow our program includes us writing two research papers of 30+ pages in a single semester. Since it's quarantine, there were two factors I had to face: first being the fact that none of the papers could be directed properly by the professors, who didn't seem to care at all, but they still mentioned that the percentage of plagiarism couldn't go above 80 percent or so. Also all the lectures were held online without requiring active participation of the students. What's more, some of the professors stated that the sessions get uploaded on the website of the university for us to watch. That's why I've decided to miss out on those specific signatures and focus on the researches. Gladly, I've managed to hit over 95% originality and the committee admired the papers. Success? Oh... It turns out none of the lectures I've skipped were getting uploaded. I haven't slept this whole semester and I have to study half of a whole signature by after tomorrow all on my own. The date was announced recently, while I was still busy overdoing projects on other signatures, as I was doing throughout the year. It's a major failure, and I already know this year's work was for nothing. I needed to maintain my spot so I could transition at the end of the semester anyways. But now I'll be forced to go to the military for a year (I'm a Russian male). Then I'll return with no educational or professional perspectives and would probably go to some food delivery bullshit as a primary occupation.

Hey Alex - so sorry for not replying sooner. How are things for you now? I feel for you having to do all this through lockdown. As you can see from my experience, it is not easy without that added layer of difficulty. But just know that if things don't turn out well, that's not the "be or end all." I haven't shared any of this yet on the channel but I didn't end up finishing my degree in the end and ironically have started work as a food delivery driver. Do I want to be doing this job forever? No. But I know that eventually I'll move on and life will do its thing. I look back to when I was at university and how unhappy I was and think "what was all that for?" I may not have gotten much from the course but I did make some wonderful friendships and share some incredible experiences while I was there, so I regret nothing. @@LiamBushrod Hey, Liam! I was touched by your reaction to my comment. Now I feel kinda lame for crying under someone's video last year.. To put it simply, I've nailed all the semesters so far. Even though it came at the cost of my personal interests and relationships (aka *life*). In consuming the contents of each subject in its entirety, I felt like I was turning into some robot with scripted behaviour and no empathy. I didn't even flinch when my gf left after I was giving her 0 attention for almost a month while working on my new term project. I resumed my workout routine for almost 6 months, but had to give that up when I received an offer to write two articles that I could publish (and I did), which would be a good addition to my portfolio. Worth? Probably not. The specialty that I'm studying for doesn't interest me one bit (neither is it a stable or a lucrative one). However, I didn't start to value relationships more either. Now I've signed up for a course in front-end programming. I wouldn't say that it's too exciting, but content-wise it's almost polar to what I've been doing for the past few years and actually seems like a reasonable choice of specialty for the current century. I'll see where it takes me. Even though I'll have to code and continue to study at the Uni simultaneously, I think I can handle this now. Thanks again for responding!!

hi there! ive been looking thru videos of Durham students and stuff and saw yours and i listened to your comments about the mental health stuff - how exactly would you rate it out of 10? (haha sorry im just a bit worried im actually hoping to get into Durham [same college as you actually! tho im currently a near miss applicant] and i have some questionable mental health issues haha). also i was wondering how you got an opportunity at an internship in America? Hey Renee, it really depends on how well you can cope in the first place on your course. As I said in the video, Engineering doesn't have any small class tutorials to ask questions about problems you've been having and to sort them out. That kind of extra stress doesn't seem like much, but when it builds up for the whole year it's awful. Then the only help you can get is from people who aren't related to your course (college staff, disability support etc). I don't want to knock them down but there's only so much they can do. In the end it just comes back round to yourself and fixing the problem yourself. But like I say, that's just engineering. Other courses do have small class seminars etc and you feel much more looked after and treated like a human and not a number. Hope that makes sense! Van Mildert is great, you'll love it. I got the internship by applying. I'd worked with them for a few weeks last year but this year the only internship they had was in America. The problem was it was being organised really late and I was worried sick about it - wondering if it would even be worth losing my entire holidays for didn't help either as that didn't sound like a whole lot of fun as a reward post-exams. Anyway, with internships you just have to look around and apply early, you never know! Thanks for the best wishes :)

Hey Liam, I've just finished 3rd year Engineering at Durham this year. I know how hard the course can be especially if you're struggling with mental health! I just want to say whatever happens in second year is only 22.2% of the degree, it's basically a 20% coursework so try to look positive for next year. Third year is more enjoyable as you get to choose your stream. Also I bet James worked you hard on solar car... anyway just give me a pm on fb if you need any advice

Hey Jonny, thanks for the message. It's been a nightmare at times but the solar car has definitely been what's keeping me (relatively) sane so far and I'm itching to get back to it once the resits are over. The fact it's such a small percentage almost makes it worse because it's harder to justify that the effort has been worth it. But I guess it'll be worth more than that if I end up on the BEng?

Why didn’t you go to Oxbridge? They have tutorials/supervisions, which are super small group teaching sessions! Although similar problems with lack of access to mental health

I actually applied to Cambridge but didn't get an interview (classic Durham student ikr). Not sure I would've been able to cope there though even with tutorials!

oh fun I also had a mental breakdown before my Christmas exams and failed my January exams. I had to get firsts in most of my other modules if I wanted to stay on my masters which was super fun not stressful at all nope edit: also I find it very strange that no tutorials were offered for your course. I study physics at Exeter and I get one every week. I just assumed that happened everywhere? Maybe you could give student feedback on the lack of support

Hey, I hope things are better for you now. I'm so glad I never had January exams or I would definitely fail them. I feel for you there! And yes it's disappointing really. Apparently universities can get away with not offering any on our courses so all we pay for is for various "experts" to stand in front of us and tell us what we should know 😐 and yes we have fed back

Liam Bushrod awww thank you. It was fine in the end because I did well in most of my summer exams. I hope you get the grades to stay on your course :) I really hope they start offering more academic support for next year. Getting one to one help (or something similar) would boost grades so much it's crazy that they don't offer it. Lectures are so hard to learn in it's just someone, that might not actually know how to teach, talking at you for an hour

I think somebody with your GCSE and A Level Grade should not fail. I feel from your comments that you have not got enough support and mentoring from Durham University. It is not the responsibility of the university to pass you, but it is their legal responsibility to support you through the course to you get a good pass. It is their failure as well as yours. It can be difficult to go through the complaints procedure of a University since ranks tend to close to support the University. If things are getting bad it is best to leave and have a rest and possibly get a job and then find another university and work hard and cut out any of the stupid extra curricular activities, since they need extra brain power to do them. This advice may help. Your mental health is more important take care of yourself. It is important for students to present these situations on social media to make universities improve and support students.

I didn't do Engineering but I've heard from many it is a really difficult degree. He still passed, it's just a tough thing to do well in. If it was that simple to get a 2.1 then anyone would complain to the university. Stop employing your millennialist-entitled attitude and grow up.

Higher alevels get you into harder universities which are graded internally so getting a 2:1 is even harder

Hey Liam ! I am a recent graduate from Durham and got my MBA through a mix of taught and distance learning, I am a mature student who did both my undergraduate and postgraduate degrees whilst working full time...this is not to boast but just to give you some background. During my studies I too have to submit serious adverse requests, mainly due to some challenges I was having with my mental health. Things that helped, I was very aware of my triggers amd what signs people should watch out for namely withdrawing from blogs, engaging with tutors....I didnt like asking for help so would stop engaging. Maybe have some time to reflect on what signs people should be aware of if you are having difficulties and share with the faculty/student support. I think you are putting a lot if pressure on yourself....when I started my undergraduate degree when I was 30 something I thought I was not clever enough or good enough and what I found was it was wasted energy. Enjoy your experience use the support available and good luck with your studies. Take care and keep chipping away !

Hey Darren, thank you for sharing that with me and congratulations for your MBA! I have too suffered from the "too scared to ask so stopped engaging" issue all too much but I'm hoping next year will be different. Lectures are being recorded from next year so I can go back over them again if I get stuck. And with regards to trigger points - I think that the fact people now know I've been struggling will help a lot but I still need to learn when to realise when a problem has gone on for too long, recognise that, and get help. As I say hopefully it won't happen again but I need to be more savvy if it does. Thank you once again and good luck for the future!

Liam Bushrod Hardest part is talking and you are getting past that part......just remember whatever your marks there is a whole world outside of uni and I am sure a whole load of friends and family who are proud of all your achievements...been able to talk about your challenges is as much an achievement as getting good grades.

I'm literally in this position right now, I just got my results and I knew I'd failed one because it went really bad but I ended up failing two subjects in my second year of engineering. Now I can't do internships and it's a ship wreck now!

Hey Muhammed, I'm glad you enjoyed the video and thank you for subscribing :) I'm by no means alone in the way my time at Durham has gone but at the same time plenty of people do enjoy their degrees here. It really depends on the course you're applying for and the way you can learn best. Definitely try to ask questions to the appropriate department about how the course is delivered, how many tutorial hours etc, and compare that with Birmingham. I'm not particularly clued up about the classist/sexist culture but it is a problem they're trying to address and you're not the first person who's asked me about this. In more ways than one Durham is currently under a long period of transition and expansion - I just hope that student satisfaction and other student issues aren't being overlooked

I attended Bham and graduated 25 years ago... while I recognise some of the issues Durham embodies... I can honestly say, as a working class, northern girl from humble roots... Birmingham was an inclusive, welcoming and diverse environment in which I flourished. Birmingham is an awesome university.

That pretty much sums it up Rob but it really depends on how you learn. Most of the contact hours are through lectures and it's never that easy to get help unless you are already really on top of things and have very specific queries. I personally struggled to follow along in lectures and I never knew what I was doing in courseworks. Other people knew what to do though so it must be possible! I really thought there would be small group tutorials or similar but there just isn't, it's all lectures. So basically what I'm saying is if you think you can teach yourself the course and work well with your peers, you'll be just fine. Hope that helps!

chemistry has a few tutorial sessions, in groups of about 5-7, they can be useful. needless to say i didnt fucking go to any of them.
