Is this live buddy. My uncle was and is still is in the band Herbs. As one of the creator song writers, he gets $100.000 dollars in royalties every year. Dave Doblin filled in as the singer because my Uncle, spencer fusimalohi a guitarist and singer who was suppose to sing this song had to go back to raratonga because his father just passed away. He became the king of his Island. But as the creator songwriter he makes a wad load of money just it and footrot flats.

@haydenbrownpodcast He could have been anywhere I was a child back then but I know they were learning this song at 13 Ewert Street Rotorua. I saw them put egg cartons on the walls of my parents basement and started experimenting on new rhythms, riffs and song genres when they came up with this totally new concept and thought regae was the go and this song was formed before my parents decided to move to Australia in 1982. They defined the sounds, rhythm music and beats before my uncle had to leave. My Aunty is Teresa McIntyre. She married my Uncle.

Split Enz are still my favourite bad ever (even if theyhad broken up by the time I discovered them). Their music was very experimental, but with Tim and Neil Finn's songwriting abilities behind them, it took them to a whole other level. I love Crowded House too, but they are a bit more 'commercial' (also both Finns, but SE was Tim's, and CH was Neil's). Please check out Parihaka by Tim Finn - tells of a very sad event in our history (worth looking up the back story with Te Whiti and Parihaka first so you understand the lyrics). Tim's son Harper Finn's song 'Conversations with the Moon' is also very worth a listen - really interesting stuff! Thanks for the great video again, Curls - you managed that really well with all the restrictions! ❤

Australians do tend to claim Kiwi things and people as their own (pavlova, lamingtons, Russel Crowe) but, and I'm probably gonna get crucified in the comments here, I think with Crowded House they may have a fair point. The original core trio of the band formed in Australia, with 2 out of the 3 of them being Australians. The driving force and chief songwriter was of course a Kiwi - Neil Finn. We may have to go for a joint custody arrangement, like Australia can have them on weekends and every other Christmas
@dumdumbinks274 Жыл бұрын
I think of them as an Aussie band playing NZ music. Paul and Nick were personalities that gave the band character, but they pretty much let Neil write the songs, sometimes with the opinion of Eddie Rayner who toured with them until 1987. Then came Woodface in 1991 which is pretty much a Finn Brothers album, so if I am forced to take a side, I'm gonna say they're a NZ band.
@mahenonz Жыл бұрын
Joint custody is a great idea! Neil Finn claims they are both an Aussie and Kiwi band, probably in an effort to keep everyone happy. I’ve always claimed them as Kiwi, the Aussies already grab enough of our stuff! We’ve got a much better claim now, as the current lineup includes three of the Finn family. Also I’m quite jealous of Curls being able to discover I Hope I Never, I was a toddler when that was released so I’ve never really been able to appreciate it as a new song.

Okay so what I did was pause and listen to the song each time you told us what it was. I'm a 39 year old kiwi and grew up with this music but most of these songs I just haven't heard in years, so wow. Listening to many of them again after all this time I have a brand new appreciation for them. This was awesome Curls, you took me on a journey through all the music I grew up listening to. I can see other commenters have listed some more great NZ music that I can highly recommend. I suppose I should recommend something too! When I was a teen I loved the band 'Tadpole'. I was obsessed with those guys. Their whole album "The Buddahfinger" was full of amazing rock music, very early 2000s and Renee Brennan... wow what a voice she has. Even listening back on those songs now I'm blown away by it.

Neil Finn the lead singer of Crowded House was Tim Finns Little brother from Split Enz. Both were in Split Enz, long story. In my opinion Split Enz are the best NZ band of all time ( I grew up in the70's listening to them) and if you ever get a chance to see them (not likley they havn't toured since 1992, I went to the concert and they are truly the best band live ever. Better than Queen, Van Halen etc, not bigger, just teh croud were better, they were better) GO! You will never see a show where a song has a mosh pit where the lead instrament is the spoons and everyone is dancing like mad! They rule the stadium, seconded by Supergroove. That is another band you really need to listen to. Che Fu is also from Superfroove and did some amazing solo work after Supergroove. But, Split Enz..... Damn the little band that told it's history via it's album titles, read the titles and you learn how the band is, the final album was Endz of an Era, say it all....
