This makes we wonder how many other KZbinrs who buy big, expensive houses, if they’re in the same boat and secretly freaking out about their debt now that these two show the truth and show that you have to face it one day

To be honest it was when you bought this house that I kind of stopped watching because I was thinking wth are they doing? I could see the anxiety and stress and deep down unhappiness... so good to have YOU back! Even though you are talking about/living thru a stressful time you are being authentic and honest and real and this is why I follow family vloggers! So happy you are having so many showings! And oh I know it's hard on the kids.. been there done that... just keep talking them through it and keep them feeling safe. I tell you what every house my mom sold it looked SO lived in and the worst ever.. kids were sick or whatever it never sold when it looked good... just a thought, maybe a little lived in is ok!

Would love to see a video where you each make a list of "Needs" and "Wants" for a more suitable house. Then compare the lists! And then list the Good and Bad Things of every one of your houses so far …. perhaps then you will have a much better idea of Your Style! Are there any home design styles (interior and exterior) that you really love?

That’s a really neat idea! We’re on the same page mostly, I think. We both loved absolutely everything about the house we had a contract on through December. It was exactly what we wanted in so many ways. Extremely open concept and much smaller. We do see now a few things that we would have probably wished were different in the long run, but no major deal breakers for sure!

I have an app called “checkbook” that I manually enter every purchase into. It has the capability of splitting accounts/cards but I just add them all in one “account” just so I can see the pie chart of categories. I never realized how much I was spending on food (eating out and places, groceries not included). It was an insane amount, like yours! For just me/my husband! The app has really made me realize where my spending habits need some changing. I recommend it. Good luck!

I stopped watching your channel because I started feeling like I couldn’t relate to you anymore. One day your first debt video popped up in my feed and I thought I would watch it since my husband and I are struggling with our finances as well. I became invested in watching you both navigating this process and your optimism gave me hope. While watching the second video, Cullens addiction episode of the podcast was in the next recommended. I felt a tugging on my heart and clicked it. Since that video I have come to admit that I am an addict and started my life towards sobriety. Thank you both. Thank you for being honest and vulnerable about ALL aspects of your life. I never expected a random debt video would lead me to changing more than just my budget. I can imagine it is tough to show so much to the world but please hear me when I say you are incredible for what you do. 💙❤️

I just want to say that at first I wasn’t really interesting in watching this “series” because I love seeing the kiddos but watched anyway and it’s been so inspirational. As a single 24 year old I really haven’t cared much about budgeting. But recently starting graduate school and getting more loans on top of my car payment and rent I’m starting to realize the importance of it. I’ve made plans to sit down with a friend that has done financial peace university so she can teach me in hopes that I make wise choices from here on out. Thank you all for sharing your story!

My husband remembers hearing me watch you guys YEARS ago when we were TTC. I took a break for awhile. I have been watching these and telling my husband the highlights through the weeks. Tonight while washing my face I was watching this. I run and out and say “ their mortgage is $3400!!! And one minimum payment on their credit card is $1500”. My husband doesn’t even watch y’all and was like HOW DO THEY DO THAT! I’m like they are selling EVERYTHING and eating ramen noodles. They aren’t playing around lol Tonight I took a stroll through my 1600 sq foot home. Thanking God for my blessings. Reminding myself that it is more than enough. Our four person family is just fine in our cozy little forever home. God bless y’all for opening up. WORLD CHANGERS!!!!!!!

I think it is time you stop being so hard on yourselves. You have learned from it and are now definitely on the path back to reality. Plus you seem happy and happiness is the key. You went off the rails and are now back on the rails. You will sell your house and move on. Does make me a bit sad to think Gaines has noticed the missing picture enough to mention it, but children are so resilient and you know that the pictures and barbies will come out again and she will grow and maybe look back on her childhood like Cullen did in this video. I think your video series will help many who are about to de-rail as you did and maybe follow a better path. I remember back when I wanted everything. Now, much older, I rarely want anything and am happier. I so hope you continue on this new road and realize your new dreams for your debt free life.

So true, you guys are at least opening up a conversation to get people thinking, including me. We just got started on baby step 2 back in Oct. with a mountain of mostly student loan debt, and had been considering moving 'up' for various reasons that we have been justifying that we need in our home - more space, pool, etc. We are starting to second guess our decisions and try be wise and figure out how we can make our smaller home work in creative ways because we truly love it and where it's located. Thanks for your honesty Katie and Cullen, I totally respect you for it!

That is the worst mindset: “if (so and so who is in a similar situation) can afford it then so can we!” I’ve been that way too but then I think about all the things that are behind the scenes that could be different. Do they have a trust fund? Did their parents pay their down payment? Do they have parents to watch their kids for free? Etc.. it was a wake up moment when I realized that even if I was the same age as someone, we live in the same city and went to the same school, we are not the same. I love this series!

This reminds me of when I was younger and my hubby got a raise and told me we could afford a bigger house. I found a beautiful home in a very nice neighborhood and toured it. At first I was excited at the thought of living in such beautiful home. As I walked around it I started to wonder how much would it cost to furnish it and heat and cool it. And I'd need help keeping it spotless. I went home and told my hubby as long as I'm able to make updates to our old house I didn't want to move. Hubby is now retired and our home has been updated and we are very happy with our equity. Thanks for making this episode to help young people make better decisions. Good luck!

My husband and I are in a similar boat. We rented for years and got out credit right to buy a house. We cashed out his retirement for the down payment (that should’ve been our red flag). About a year later we decided to upgrade my vehicle. I was driving an older mini van that we paid cash for and upgraded to a newer Tahoe. Big mistake! Hindsight is 20/20 and we all make mistakes. We our selling the Tahoe and getting something smaller that we can pay outright for. The house will probably be put on the market here soon. Life is all about lessons and sometimes it hurts like hell. We had to just humble ourselves and admit we shouldn’t have tried to keep up with the Jones’s.

I absolutely love how honest you guys have been with us. I feel like we are finally seeing the real Katie and Cullen. My husband and I were crammed into an 1100 sq ft 2 bedroom 1 bath house for 5 years with our 3 kids. We wanted so bad to move into a bigger house. It was so stressful for us. Our 2 oldest were sharing the master bedroom and the youngest was in the smallest bedroom with us. With her crib and our bed we only had about 6sq ft to move around. I literally had to crawl over my husband every night to get in and out of bed. We were patient and knew that one day we would be financial able to improve our living situation. This past September we were finally able to move into a 2300 sq ft 4 bedroom 2 bath house. We each have our own bedroom now and the girls have a playroom as well. I'm so thankful that we waited until we were financially in a good place before making the change. It really makes you appreciate what you have when you went through such a struggle to get there. I admire what you are trying to do for your family. We all make mistakes, but admitting to them and correcting them is nothing to be ashamed of.

As I mentioned in a comment before, we placed our home for sale 06/19 - 09/19, but removed it off the market because the transfer my husband put in for fell through. It was so very hard on our children with packing their things up, removing all family photos, and “depersonalizing” our home. That small window was all they could take. We hung most everything back up in November, and they were so happy. I used that time to donate so much wall decor, and decor in general, so it’s mostly just our family photos back up. But it is so true how much children notice, and miss seeing their family pictures 😊 I’m praying like crazy y’all can get this home sold, and get back to a new routine, and a new normal 🙏🏻

I am in my second year of paying off debt. I also follow Ramsey. It’s good for me to be reminded how easily it will be to fall back in debt and that we always have to remain mindful about our money. I am about down to just having a car loan to pay and wanting to upgrade my living situation. Good luck to you guys. I was in such a dark hole and in a year I paid 28k Which for me is a lot. Next year will feel so different 😃

I've watched since you were pregnant with Gaines. I vividly remember when you posted this video, and I was so confused. This house was no who I thought you were. I have LOVED watching your transformation on your channel Katie and watching Cullen turning everything around. You guys are awesome and I know that this house will sell soon and you can find something that you actually want. Love this series guys!! Keep going!!

You guys kinda sounded like real estate agents trying to sell yourselves this house you already bought. Watching it back you can see the insecurities and justifications so clearly. It's so common for people to do that though! We always want to convince ourselves we are making the right choice even if deep down we have so many doubts. Loving this series!

I own a cleaning company so I see a lot of houses. People have too much stuff which creates more work and stress. Growing up we did not have too many toys. We appreciated what we had and we played outside. How can kids choose what to play with when they have so much? Before you clean, all the toys have got to be picked up. The more toys you have, the more work there is. We all need to declutter so we have more time to do what we want to do. I have really enjoyed your decluttering videos and now your get out of debt videos. You guys are learning lessons at the school of hard knocks but you will come out of this stronger and better! I look forward and value your videos because we can learn together.

The sitting room in a house comment really made me laugh! Growing up we had a sitting room in my parents house and the concept was so ridiculous...nobody go into it except for holiday entertaining! Really enjoying your honesty, like I've said before and many others it's really made me be more conscious about our own family spending and retirement saving! I hope y'all make good coin off this series it's so helpful for the rest of us!

I so felt your pain describing how you feel so bad about selling stuff and the kids being upset. I understand it’s probably hard for them now but I guarantee they are going to look back when they are older and be soooo grateful that you were honest with them about what was going on. Your setting such an amazing example for your kiddos! Remember that! 💕

I'm new to y'alls videos. To be honest I heard about you on Brad and Rach and decided to come check it out. They were saying how they appreciated your honesty about your debt. I haven't gone back and watched any old videos and to be even more honest I don't intend to. Your vulnerability and openness is inspiring to watch. Being real, when it's not "cool" is awesome. Thank your for sharing!!!

I'm a new subscriber. Your debt videos came up on my recommended & I'm hooked! Having never been a viewer, I wanted to go back & watch your videos so I could get to "know you" (as much as that's possible.) The video from when you bought your first house was so heart warming. You were truly joyful & excited! It was so sweet! And thensaying you were going out to celebrate by having dinner at Chili's WITH A GIFT CARD! I loved that. It's so easy to get caught up in life & just start going with the flow. When that autopilot switches on it can be difficult to gain control again. But you guys have done just that. And I know I'm a random stranger from the internet, but damn! I'm proud of you! You have made the decision to secure your future & most importantly, the future of your children! I will be sending good vibes & will continue to watch.

Absolutely love this series that y’all are doing. It just shows HOW real y’all are. Not that I didn’t think that before but now y’all are even more relatable which I think we all love. Y’all are sharing stuff that not many people would share and it’s stuff that NEEDS to be shared more so thank y’all for doing this so so much.

I will admit, I stopped watching for a while when y’all bought the bigger house...I loved your old house! We live with our in-laws and would love to get out on our own ASAP...so I’m back to watching you guys for inspiration. I love the honesty, and I can see how everyone is loving these videos and drawing their own desire to be debt free from them. ❤️

I've really loved watching you guys and it's been inspiring. I've been really concentrating on my budgeting and finances the last 9-12 months and today, I paid off a credit card I've had a balance on since at least 2013 and I'm now 100% DEBT FREE (I rent vs own). I cannot tell you how light and happy I feel. Thank you for being vulnerable and sharing, because it really does help SO many people. Have a wonderful weekend!

This video was such an emotional rollercoaster! My heart was so sad for you guys feeling like this as stressed the kids but then laughing with you hollering at your past selves. Hind sight is always 2020. You guys seem so much more relaxed NOW, more yourselves (I mean I assume since we've never met 😆). I hope nothing but the best for your family. I'm really enjoying this series.

I remember watching the new house video and thinking you must have gotten a great price on the house since there was so much you wanted to change. The house felt old to me and just not you at all. And I know from experience that thought process of saying we can upgrade this. In our last home we spent 10 years trekking people we would finish the attic. We finally did it maybe 2 years before we moved. I hope you guys can sell soon and find something that works better for your family.

Long comment alert! I’ve been subscribed for 4-5 years now and these videos have drawn me in to your family even more. My husband and I have a 4.5yo, 3.5yo, almost 2yo, and I’m due with #4 in March. In 2018 we were beyond fixing our budget and had to file bankruptcy. We made some dumb decisions but once we maxed out our credit cards and got personal loans, we were totally unable to pay all our bills and for groceries every week. There were no extras, no payments beyond minimums, it was suffocating. Now we are doing so much better 1.5 years after filing and we have savings accounts for us AND our kids. My husband makes more and we only have student loan debt, one small car loan, and our mortgage (but also not as good credit because of the bankruptcy). We bought our home in 2014 and it was built in 1904 🥴 When we moved in I was pregnant for the first time and we assumed we would have 1 child and move out of here in a few years. It was very cheap and for that I am grateful. The big issue is it’s a 3 bed, 1 bath for a soon-to-be family of 6. I’ve been dying to move as our family keeps growing and this series has helped me just calm the heck down and embrace it. The bankruptcy is going to hinder our ability to obtain another mortgage anyway, but this series has also helped me make sure we stay focused on completely crawling out of the hole and build up savings to have a massive down payment for when our credit is good enough to get approved to buy again. It’s hard to see the light, but you guys are helping me to focus on the small steps and stay hopeful for the future instead of rushing the process and getting into trouble all over again. Hope it’s not weird to say but I’m proud of you two and how much you’ve grown. Thanks for sharing all of this and having an impact on all of us! Also I hope you’re getting more traffic and ad revenue from these videos 🙂

I love y'all for going through all this on KZbin for those of us who are complete strangers, frankly. And please know that the majority of us are utterly grateful! These emotional, raw, real videos are AMAZING! And they will help tons of people!! That said, your house has been on the market too long. Just my opinion, since we went through selling a house for close to FOUR YEARS--the first listing was for almost nine months in 2011 on our own, which did NOT work. The second time was with the agent/agency that sold us the house 13 years prior, and they recommended giving it six months...they said the best time to list was in February, but we didn't want to wait that long, so we listed it in September--nope. Didn't work, and we removed it in January + did some things they recommended: painting everything neutral, removing all personal items, and renting a storage space for any "extras." Then, we relisted from Memorial Day to Labor Day because we only gave them 90 days to sell it with the second listing with their agency. Didn't work. Finally, we decided to give up until after the holidays. A friend at a different agency begged us to give him a try and to NOT pull all of the personal stuff, but leave the "extras" in storage. So, we didn't even worry about it being perfectly clean (we have two kids and had two large dogs at that time, which was extremely hard to manage every time there was a showing). We relisted it in February of 2014--it sold in 48 hours! So...be patient. It can be a long haul. And if it's not cluttered and even has some personal stuff, that shouldn't matter to the right buyer. I wish you luck and send you peace while waiting.

I just want to say - you guys are doing a good job. You are excellent parents. My heart hurt hearing you reflect on how you feel this is affecting the kids, and I can totally understand. But I want you to know, all I see are two people who love their kids, and themselves enough to do the work. You are doing a great job. Thank you for being you, being honest and bringing us along with you.
