Btw, I've heard that some trans folks actually use Starbucks to try out their new name, to check if it feels right. So if you're not sure which one name to choose, trying them in Starbucks order might some way to solve it as you hear yourself being called with it with no commitnments.

I’m so sorry to hear that. My son (19] is bi, and my daughter’s (14) best friend is trans. I can’t fathom being anything but supportive and loving towards my kids. I’m so very sorry that you didn’t have your parents support. It seems such folly to me that parents decide to make themselves and their children, their spouse, the whole family unhappy when there really isn’t any reason to be. I don’t know if it’s displaced fear, or inflexibility or what, but it’s so dumb. Life is so much better when you realize that when the people you love are happy, you’re happy! Some relationships should end, but if there was a non-toxic relationship before, keep the candle in the window, maybe one day things will change.

I've been doing a lot of cleaning jobs for the past couple years, and I think sanitary bins in men's rooms are a huge win for everyone. For the transmascs, for guys who use incontinence pads, or for just anyone who wants to rid their pockets of random trash while they have a minute to spare. There has been a lot less littering on the floors and fewer clogged toilets ever since it's become a requirement to have at least one stall with a bin in every men's room.
@electronics-girl

im so confused, why are people talking about sanitary bins, isn't that a normal thing to have in a restroom?
@electronics-girl
@electronics-girl Жыл бұрын
@@kofipita At least where I live, men's restrooms have one or more large trash cans by the sink or by the door, primarily for paper towel waste. Women's restrooms have the same thing, but they *also* have a small trash receptacle in each stall. This is because you're not supposed to flush your pad/tampon down the toilet, but you probably also don't want to carry your bloody garbage out of the stall and dispose of it in the main trash can where everyone else in the restroom can see. As a non-uterus person, I had never really thought about that before, but once I saw it, it made a lot of sense.
@Sicanda
@Sicanda Жыл бұрын
Yeah, it used to be the same here. It's a pretty new regulation to also have the small bins (or at least one) in the men's room. It's a small sign of acceptance or at least awareness of trans people which is nice to see by itself, but like I said, even cis men have started using them. They're just really convenient. :)

I think the least realistic part of the Starbucks commercial isn't the barrista not butchering the name. The least realistic part is that it didn't have them try to figure out their orders for five minutes just for him to fuck it up anyway because it's a string of twenty made-up brand terms you need to get 100% to get exactly what you wanted. You don't just say "coffee" and get what you want. Unlike pronouns, this is complicated.

Same. I think that's because with pride merch you have a lot more profit associated, they count on the sales and it can just be a relatively small compartment compared to their "regular" sold items. But with the ads, the companies actually make a (kind of) risky move to lose homo-/transphobic customers, it's more of a representation and signals change in society.

You’re only happy with LGBTQ+ representation when it’s in ads? Or you’re only happy with rainbow capitalism as it pertains to ads because those are an opportunity for visible acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community? Because those are two very different things, and I’m gonna need you to clarify.

I semi-agree, my reason is changing with the more lgbtq+ inclusive shows we are getting now. Back in the day when shows/movies wanted to be inclusive, they were only able to show lgbtq+ in an over the too/negative types of ways. I.e. pron, getting beat up/murdered (broke back mountain/boys dont cry), not faithful/always messing around (The L Word- i like the show, but the rep is bad still.) And granted, we needed some of that to bust walls down to get where we are now, i feel like people still ONLY see the lgbtq+ like that. Which is why I like these new age commercials because they are forcing people to see that lgbtq+ are just "everyday" people. Not all lesbians are pron stars (yes im spelling it so auto whatever doesnt pick it up.) Not all gay guys are "weak", not all trans people are predators, ect. I feel that commercials are showing "The REAL lgbtq+" and I love it better than shows are able to portray.

Thin socks in summer, thick the rest of the year, but any time they have to be knee length. The Starbucks one with Arpita absolutely made me tear up...I just wish they made better coffee.

Just wanna drop by in the comments real quick to tell y'all about a Belgian coffee ad that also has really cool, kind of casual representation! It's called "Douwe Egberts, Something To Share" and it basically tells a quick story about a teenage girl who has her girlfriend over, but her dad comes home earlier than expected, so she tries to quickly hide her in her room (afraid of judgement from her father). Her father then texts her if they want some coffee, by which they both go downstairs (hereby the girl introducing her girlfriend) and then share a coffee and talk with her dad. It's honestly really cute and I just wanted to share it here real quick

Oof, the Starbucks ad made me cry as soon as the girl walked through the door. And she’s so gorgeous too. I came out as a trans man to my parents this year at the age of 33 so it wasn’t easy for them to adapt. But today I spent the day with my mom and at one point we talked about how everything’s going (I do my therapy sessions at the moment so I’ll get T next year) and she used my new name and referred to me as her son and asked some questions and I feel so grateful. So far everyone I came out to has been super accepting and everyone tries to use the new name and pronouns and corrects themselves when they use the old ones by accident. I wish every trans person could have people in their life who support them

Tangential shift, your comment about the tongue piercing as to whether it would set off a metal detector... ...it depends Specifically on size/amount, material and of course, sensitivity of the metal detector in question. "In general, a few piercings-even if grouped together-usually do not pose a threat of setting off an alarm. However, with today's heightened security, it is always a possibility. The risk also increases with the more piercings you have, or if you wear larger jewelry like hoops or gauges." 🤔

Absolutely with you on the thick socks. Thin socks feel awful - especially since I need to wear orthotics and they have a smooth surface that thin socks slip around on. I like those work socks with the red ring on top, or hiking socks.

She didn't just steal anyone's glasses, she stole Santa Claus' glasses. As for socks - no, the thickness of my socks change depending on how the shoes fit. I wear a US size 6 1/2 extra wide. Some shoes are just a touch too tight all the same for thick socks, so I have to wear thin ones to be able to wear them without my toes going numb.
