I've never rushed so hard to get a video done so I apologize in advance for the choppy editing and possibly half-baked sentences lol. But I was just super excited when I saw Bloomberg drop an interview with Leena Nair. Plus if I waited to release this next weekend, who knows what we would've already moved on to lol. If you are a current or aspiring Chanel customer, I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR YOUR THOUGHTS (and if you have a channel, please make a video!). Thanks for watching!

"Stay quiet and blend in" is an Indian workplace cultural habit, particularly for women. Even if that advice wasn't overtly stated, it doesn't surprise me in the slightest that this is what she was encouraged to do growing up. It is truly remarkable that she, from a rural part of India, was "allowed" by her parents to pursue these opportunities. That took going against the grain of its time, and I'm quite certain she was told repeatedly not to make waves lest it jeopardize what they prob thought were already tenuous marriage prospects. The interview could've been more hard-hitting but her personal story is pretty amazing.

Loved your take on Leena's interview! Please keep in mind that Chanel is originally an Haute Couture house and handbags/small leather goods came much later almost as an after thought. Their main focus has always been Ready to Wear clothing which is very well made from my experience. Most clients are not aware of this simply because they don’t know or care to look into it. The price increase is understanding due to how limited stock was and also due to many resellers are buying all of the stock not allowing genuine clients to get hold of the products they want easily. I don’t know when it will stop… but stock availability is getting better and I think it reinforces just how timeless Chanel is. If you take away Hermes’s 3 iconic handbags, I highly doubt many people would still be as interested in the brand. Whereas, Chanel has a variety of categories that not only compliment their main focus of clothing but also make the brand that much more interesting to invest in. Think their tweed suits, costume jewelry, fine jewelry, beauty and fragrance, camellias, etc.

Thank you for making this response video so quickly! You have highlighted some of the discrepancies and contradictions so succinctly. I wish the interviewer had asked more pointed questions.

If you removed the word Chanel from the interview you wouldn’t even have known she was representing nor speaking about Chanel. So generic, overly prepared, and not relevant at all to the industry let alone Chanel.

This video is why I think KZbin is such a valuable platform. You can still love the product and not like the leadership and fantasy of why you love something, which can be just as important as knowing how “the sausage is made.” Well done pointing out the importance of staying on message as a CEO. I was also confused by her views on targeting a younger audience when the bar is now set at 11k per classic bag, and the RTW designs haven't moved the fashion needle much in the last decade.

Thank you for this reaction. Chanel and I have no relationship to each other, lol, but I can answer your one question to your audience. One time I've heard advice akin to 'blend in' was in gov't work where there's often not much financial incentive for excellent performance and where 'your reward for good performance is just more work'. Head down and just do your work is a sentiment I've heard. Somewhat related to the 'quiet resignation', where you do just the minimum of what you were hired for, particularly in an environment that doesn't really reward going above and beyond. Thanks again.

Thank you for making this video. I can't even describe how different the level of critical analysis is in your video compared to some other vapid "reaction videos" to the same interviews

I am a collector and amateur connoisseur of luxury lingerie and only recently started to dive into the luxury handbag market world. And oh man… If I had a nickel for every luxury lingerie item that was intended/claimed to “empower me [women],” I could buy a few Chanel bags with french leavers lace and mulberry silk underwear to match. Ironically, “empowerment” is a lazy word, especially in the context of branding. A low hanging fruit that sounds juicy and significant, yet doesn’t translate into anything meaningful/measurable. What bothers me the most about this phrase is that it’s only ever used in targeting female demographics. (If there is a product out there that boasts of “empowering men,” please correct me). IMO, it implies that men are independently empowered- either inherently or self-generated. Whereas women acquire empowerment from external sources (aka buying shit). TBH, it’s pretty insulting. Why can’t a product reflect or complement my already-there, internally-drummed-up empowerment? How much does one need to spend on empowering themselves before they are seen as empowered spenders? Sidenote- This kind of reminds me of the years when Secret deodorant was “strong enough for a man but made for a woman”- long before before anyone ever stopped and noticed that it’s more accurately “strong enough for a woman.”

Great video! I don’t blame Nair, but I don’t think she’s been set up for success. The Wertheimers (the controlling stakeholders) likely wanted a very green female figure head as a hedge against bad publicity. She can serve as the face of Chanel, acting as a distraction while Chanel continues to raise prices while lowering quality for accessories. Chanel is also leaning heavily into courting HNW and UHNW people at the expense of aspirational customers. So Nair’s message that Chanel is for women and values new customers bc they make up 30% of all customers, rings hollow. Because she has no experience as a CEO and worse came from HR, she has no power internally to actually move the needle.

I just watched a video on the declining quality of Chanel Make up and can honestly say that Chanel is impressively consistent in disappointing me. This interview is just another one of those disappointments. Still, thank you for your recap and thoughts on the musings of this clearly misplaced „professional“ woman.
