I currently work in a cinema thats gearing up to show this film. Was talking about modern Disney movies being so low in quality because it's 'half-baked, half-thought-through message before story,' then realized that we were also deacribing 95% of Christian cinema (including, unfortunately, the Kendrick films.) Agree with a lot of the comments, a big thing that's missing is struggle and realism. Like, you won't get everything you want exactly how you want it just because you prayed about it. God is not a genie, and life is not perfect -- that's what heaven's for. Anyways, great to see you back, Kevin!
@jacindaellison33636 ай бұрын
@TheShorterKatechism I think it's safe to say that a majority of Christian movies made by Christian studios are made with a Christian family in mind. I mean, when I saw Fireproof and, for some reason, that movie didn't say the word p*rn, I was like, "Well, then why have Caleb struglle with it? If it's meant for Christian kids to watch, why would you have Caleb struggle with something that's taboo?" The sad part is that Alex Kendrick used to be critical of Christian movies, but after the praise Flywheel had received, he threw all that healthy critical approach to Christian movies and adopted the generic "Good message=good film" bs and that's why we get these movies.

Funny story: When I read the premise alone, before they had the trailer, I guessed the race of the protagonist because it screamed black stereotypes. Oh my gosh, this movie is similar to Overcomer! A black teen, possibly a non-believer, has family troubles because parent or parents aren't in his or her life. Tell me I'm wrong! It's really sad, Kevin, that the Kendrick Brothers were willing to let you give constructive feedback on their Overcomer story only to barely listen to you! Like what was up with that? My issue with these films isn't a lack of a clear message or story. It's more "Is this a good message?" I can't put my finger on it enough to articulate something coherent, but there's just something that feels wrong about Kendrick Brothers movies. Idk if it's the whole "Join the movement and buy our merch/study/certificate/sword/etc.," or how they oversimplify serious life situations and boil it down to "just pray, bro; don't think about it... also, you'll need our companion study guide and a small group to really make this work." Am I the only one who thinks that?
@jacindaellison33636 ай бұрын
I would think The Kendrick Brothers' main thing is that as long as the message edifies the church, then they did their job. Which explains why their movies are crap. And, to top it off, Alex Kendrick released a small video that was released last year answering the question of why their movies come off as being preachy. Basically, his response was that while he and his brother aren’t the standard for film making, he believes that they have to put the church first. That makes no sense. The Bible is full of well written stories. And he makes it sound like you can't make Christian art, even have the nerve to make it sound like it was ONLY the Secular audeho were feeling their stuff is preachy. My biggest frustration with their movies is that as long their fans keep telling them they like them, they'll never change and will keep making these awful films. The same goes for Pinnacle Peaks, formerly Pureflix. Now, I'm not saying if people are touched by these are wrong to voice them, but that doesn't mean their movies are above criticism.
@joro39456 ай бұрын
Well, it’s also the idea that by the end everything is solved and there’s nothing else the main characters have to worry about ever again. Lots of hallmarky HEA endings in these movies.
@jacindaellison33636 ай бұрын
@@joro3945 to add, it feels like the happy endings don't feel earned. Tbh, I don't think this movie will make money. I truly believe, thanks to Angel Studios, we've been having better tastes in Christian movies. The Forge is lucky if it breaks even, considering, not counting their debut film Flywheel, the Kendrick Brothers' 2022 movie, Life Mark, only earned $5 million for 2 week period they were in theaters. That's their lowest grossing film, not looking good from 2019's Overcomer that made $38 million.

When the world needed him most, he returned EDIT: I'd love to see you tackle _The Wingfeather Saga_ at some point. I just finished the book series recently and was honestly blown away, particularly by books 3 and 4. The animated show is only on season 2 but the last book literally made me cry twice and I'm convinced Andrew Peterson is like one of only two people left on this planet who actually knows how to do storytelling with Christian themes correctly. By the end it was obvious but not too heavy-handed, plus unlike a lot of these movies he actually took a lot of genuine risks (like portraying and condemning child abuse, a lot of death and tragedy that doesn't get wrapped up with a neat happy ending, including a disabled character who isn't a stereotype, another character who is basically depressed for two books and lowkey wanting to be unalive by the 4th, and * gasp * actually portraying adults as humans who can and do make mistakes that oftentimes cause future generations problems they didn't ask for). Idk how much the show is ultimately going to do them justice but the books go a lot harder than expected and I was kind of surprised given that a lot of the elements would make a good number of pearl-clutching Christian parents freak out. Then again I found out he's a massive Tolkien fan so he learned from one of the best about how to tell a fantasy story in that vein so
@jacindaellison33635 ай бұрын
@aricaj.3006 oh my gosh, I read The WingFeather Saga, too! Yeah, those books are risky. I'm aware that Angel Studios has written two seasons of the books so far. Man, some of those illustrations are scary for a children's book, but that's ok! They're intimidating but not to the point to give kids nightmares. I also can't wait until The Axiom Chronicles and Gabriel and the Angels get their funding. Saw both trailers and am stoked! Only issue? I wish Angel Studios would stop taking a dunk on secular media. Yes, Hollywood screwed up with Ben Hur 2016, Noah, and Exodus: God's and Kings. BUT, they kicked ass with the original Ben Hur, The Ten Commandments, and The Prince of Egypt and other Christian movies like The Witch.

@@thequietdreamer2186 yes, faith-based movies need the constructive criticism. I get so fed up when I see comments saying "Well, Christ is still being preached." "It's still good." Marvel suffered TWO box office flops last year, so that made them really just to CONSIDER what they were doing. Sadly, some Christians who love these movies they take some of the valid criticism as attacking and will continue to ignore it.

@@CWRoederer Yeah, looking back at it, I don't think Courageous really delved into what it means to be a real man, let alone being a father. I even have an issue with how they did War Room about how to be a godly wife: just pray for your husband and to even try to correct him=nagging and not being loving?! Hey, Kendrick Brothers, you guys ever heard of "Faithful are the wounds of a friend, but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful"? This is, what, their 6th film? (I'm too lazy to actually check that, but let's go with it) and somehow this trailer is one of their worst. That's almost impressive. I know they know their audience and their audience doesn't care about such things because they'll watch these films no matter what, but yikes. "Super hokey" is such a polite way of describing the film, well done, Kevin. I'm sure the Kendrick's hearts are in the right place but man, when there is no growth... at all... in years... that's just sad. Just because the Lord is the same yesterday, today, and forever doesn't mean we have to stay the same.

Notice that there's been a theme in Courageous, Overcomer, and now this movie: women are incompetent in raising their kids on their own. Better get a man or a father figure asap of that kid's going ro have problems for the rest of his life🤦♀️. What, you're saying that God can't help single and widowed and divorced mothers into raising their kids by themselves? I can understand some mothers need help but not all the freaking time. And, it hurts more because this is the second movie where the black kid is a "bum" because daddy isn’t in the picture and the female relative is incompetent in raising them.
