This is my reaction to and analysis of Home Free's, "Skull and Bones." Original song by Adam Chance.

You really need to watch the live version of this when it was introduced at Ubisoft! You can see them sing and, with no production, it’s even better. The underneath that you hear are the words “Skull and Bones.” Chance did such a wonderful job with his composition!

When Home Free released their "Sea Shanty Medley" during the lock down and it went viral, the game company Ubisoft saw it and was so impressed by them that they reached out to Home Free and asked if they would be interested in creating an original song for their game (which was in development) Skull and Bones. Of course they jumped on that and their one and only sea shanty enthusiast, Adam Chance stepped up and wrote this master piece. Ubisoft introduced them and their song at the Summer Game Fest 2023, along with the lyric video which is what we had until now. This video incorporates elements of the game into the story depicted in the video. Well worth the wait, love it. What an epic original sea shanty by Chance and Home Free. You can tell Ubisoft contributed a lot to this video. Many have commented that it is like a mini movie including the end credits. In the credits the female pirate is referred to as Marianne and is played by Clair Glassford. The young Marianne is played by Kate Kilclough. Looking forward to what they have next for us.

The percussion is all Adam Rupp until the final chorus when they bring in some actual drums, as per Ubisoft's wishes. There are also guitar and mandolin, both played by Chance in the studio recording. The drones at the beginning are a combination of Rupp using overtone singing to do two notes at once and Chance bowing a guitar.

Thank you. That is what I heard as well. I think I heard the acoustic guitar used in concert is a standard steel string acoustic, but for the studio recording it was nylon strings.

When they performed it live in concert, you could really hear Opera Rob shine in the chorus.

I did notice something that I hadn't before. At the beginning she is fondling a necklace with a dark red stone. As captain with all her gold necklaces, she is still wearing that red stone necklace.

David !!! so glad you fiunally gave us an analysis ! Chance really wrote an honest to goodness modern day Sea Shanty !!! It's a new classic !!!

I believe that Ubisoft wanted instruments for their soundtrack. I loved the double bass harmony with an added drone by Adam. It really rumbles your bones.

When they do this live Chance just has a guitar, the first time they did this live for Ubisoft it was just the guitar and a mandoline.You should watch that video, the mixing is wild in that. It's on their channel.

Appreciate your going into so much depth and detail with this great song , which will become a classic, I'm sure. Great songwriting by Chance. The live version in Oslo in 2023 is wonderful.

Totally Epic!!!. 🏴‍☠ It is just plain fun to review and realize their gifts and talents are over the top extraordinary. This group can simply stand tall amongst the industry vocalist peers (groups and gifted vocalists). They bring about an excitement intrigue wondering what they will produce for us today, near future and the years to come. They are not bound by a particular genre and whatever they produce you know it is going to be quality. Home Free produces at a high level of integrity and always amazing the interpretation both vocally and visually with their video presentation. Every individual in their vocal group is significant top-notch performer and each draws out the very best in each other. I always look with anticipation to their next release. Thank you Home Free!!! ❣🏴‍☠

I was so surprised the first time I saw them do this at the Ubisoft conference. You would probably enjoy that video. It's only one verse, but quite impressive. It seems like Tim goes even lower in the intro than he does here. The chant they are doing in the background late in the song is "skull and bones". There is also a lyric video that shows what's being sung. Great songwriting from Chance.

Watching this live in Europe was so good, and we even got to sing along with the classic call and response of a sea shanty. Thank you for another great reaction, I always appreciate the details of the music and the video you pull out that I wouldn't otherwise notice.

The video they did when the game was launched, Tim was singing an octave lowerbso was Chance. Who wrote this!

Loved your reaction and analysis! The only instruments were guitar. I am not sure if there was a mandolin in the beginning or not. It sounded like so, though. There was in the lyric video and the live UbiSoft live version. Excited to see them live soon. I heard they’re performing this on this tour. We’ll be there!

Thanks for your analysis. Wasn't that great! We've been waiting for this official video by Home Free for awhile now. It felt like I was watching a movie. Home free is so talented & they can do any genre of music. Chance loves sea shanties & he wrote this song for the game "Skull & Bones". His deeper voice sounded great for this song. And of course all the background harmonies of the guys, Tim's bass & Adam's fabulous vocal percussion.

Ubisoft contacted Home Free to write a song for their video game. Since Chance had always been fond of sea shanties he wrote it. The only instruments are guitar (Chance plays guitar) and mandolin. Chance also plays guitar on their version of "Born in the U.S.A."). Oddly perhaps for an acapella band, they all play instruments.

You might care to check out the original live performance, when the song was presented to Ubisoft et al. It has all the menace but unlike this version, of course it has none of the (over-)production that this suffers from. It's a bit daft to make the chorus sound like hundreds of people when we only see 5 pirates (and pirate ships were lightly crewed). You can just about make out Austin and Rab's voices but there is an undifferentiated mulch along with them. The beginning of the story is silly. Tim wants more crew, so while harboured *in India*, he puts up a notice, *in English*. Most of the men he could employ probably couldn't read! Crew were mostly recruited from anyone strong enough who was willing to take the risks.. The idea that the girl prevents a flood of hopeful applicants by taking down the notice ...! Still. the song is great (you can find other live recordings from the band's new tour) and the video looks amazing.
