Love your in-depth reactions to some of The Bee Gees biggest hits! The brothers actually had never been to Massachusetts, but the song was written in 1967 at a hotel in NYC during a US tour. It was written as an antithesis for that period of time……known as “the summer of love”…..when many hippies were packing up & moving to San Fransisco. But this particular protagonist had become homesick while there & decided to return home to Massachusetts.

I love Robin's voice. It's so ethereal. That tremelo tugs at my heart. I don't try to interpret "Massachusetts" or "I Started A Joke." I just know Robin as a teen was very much influenced by his near-death experience in a train wreck where many around him were killed or terribly injured. It really affected him. It may be why many of his lead vocals in those early songs are so very emotional... sometimes full of longing, or colored with sense of loss, or tinged with unexplained sadness. Perhaps that's part of what makes his delivery have such effect on a listener. Still, I've enjoyed him throughout the evolution of The Bee Gees... and in the most recent of his solo works before he passed away. There is a very beautiful song by Robin in 2012 that you should hear. It's a live performance he did with the backing of King William's College Choir. The song is called "Ellan Vannin." Ellan Vannin means Isle of Man. The island is a very beautiful place in the British Isles, and is where Robin and his siblings were born. The song is somewhat of an unofficial anthem of the island. The video of the performance includes part of the song performed inside a church and part outside near the sea... the beauty and heart of the song matching that of the island in the scenes filmed. And Robin's voice... is the same... filled with beauty and heart. kzbin.info/www/bejne/enamlnpror-CoKs

You should go back to the very first Bee Gees albums from the late sixties. "Bee Gees First" and "Horizontal" and "Odessa". They did some really creative stuff. In fact they were referred to by some as the Australian Beatles. The reason these songs were so short is they had to fit on a 45 single which only had room for about 3 min. of music. Someone once said you know when you're in love cause that's when all the lyrics make sense!!

Also, most songs back then were usually 2 to 2 1/2 minutes long. The Beatles were the same way…..perhaps reflecting expectations of radio play for that period of time.

@@SarahraeLivingLife I find that era to just be so very interesting. I would have loved it had they remained a 5 piece band for longer. You should check out the song in which Vince Malouney sings lead vocals - the only time there wasn't a Gibb singing lead
