I can tell you that RTD and the other producers were 100% intentionally yanking the fans' chains with this episode title. It was announced after DT had announced he was leaving, and the title was revealed BETWEEN the airing of The Stolen Earth and Journey's End, so all of us were doing the merry-go-round of "Is DT seriously doing a surprise exit before the season 4 finale or not??" And all the promos played coy with whether David Morrisey might indeed be the new Doctor or not (Matt Smith hadn't been announced yet). Fun times back in 2008!

This era of Dr Who really liked to mess with the fans in a meta sense. They'd take things that are known to the public and use it to trick the expectation. Since David Tennant was so wildly popular as The Doctor, his leaving the series was big news. Everyone knew it was going to happen, so they kept teasing it. A similar thing happened in the Matt Smith era, but I'm not about to make River Song mad so no spoilers (even if you're past that point currently).

This is one of those where the casting does a lot of the heavy lifting. For example, Dervla Kirwan was widely known at this point for her roles in Goodnight Sweetheart and Ballykissangel, while David Morrissey had been in all sorts of things, most notably the series Blackpool, alongside David Tennant himself. It's also interesting to observe that while most people in the UK are more interested in character interaction rather than plot, it does seem that in the US plot is more important than character; at least, from what I've seen.

Sorry, this comment is becoming much longer than I thought. I can honestly say thought that, as a parent, the very thought of losing a child is enough to send one into a major depressive episode. It is all to easy to imagine that actually losing one would force the mind to defend itself by retreating to a place where such a thing never happened, even if it meant taking on a whole new personality. The reason for using kids as oppsoed to adults as a workforce would likely due be to simple security. ie, you don't have to worry about them overpowering their captor or trying to escape. And if you get enough kids in one place you can offset the reduction in output you'd lose from having smaller work units. Also, at this point in history, there were so many orphans that using them would have gone unnoticed, hence those particular men being converted, whereas if many adults had gone missing it would have drawn attention to the Cybermen's operation, while there was no one to worry about the orphans. To clarify the question about a paradox, it would have been true only if the Doctor deliberately crossed his own timeline to try and change events in his own past. Even if Jackson Lake was the real Doctor, this version of the Doctor would have simply become a part of his own history, rather than the element that changed it. On a casting note, the lad you played Frederic Lake also appeared in an episode of the New Who spin off Torchwood, which I would recommend if you have the time, being centered around Captain Jack, s seen in the last two episodes of the fourth season.

Hey I get it, I didn't start liking Cybermen as an antagonist until series 8, where ironically they were the flunkies for some other antagonist who stole the show. But to be fair I didn't like Daleks until the 13th Doctor, it just depends on what's done with them, there are some interesting ideas here and there and one wasted potential instance in series 7 where it would have been more effective and interesting using them instead of Daleks. I think Cybermen work better when there's that body horror aspect of them using people as spare parts, the person trapped in the machine. Those types of Cybermen stories are so good
@10thdoctor157 ай бұрын
The Cybermen should definitely have been used instead of the Daleks in the story. Didn't like the Daleks until 13!? I'm assuming you didn't watch series 1-4 until later.
@nedzed36637 ай бұрын
@10thdoctor15 Oh no, I've watched the series from season 1 to current. And maybe "didn't like" them is a bit harsh. I do like the Daleks and Cybermen. They just weren't always my favorite antagonists for the Dr to face. There were some interesting bits here and there with both during RTD, Moffatt, and Chibnall's runs. The Daleks moreso than the Cybermen, because there were some moments with Moffat especially where the creep factor was captured really well with the Daleks, which was my issue with how his run (with the 11th Doc) handled the Cybermen. The Cybermen should be the creepy. The episode "Asylum of the Daleks" could have been so much more unsettling had it been the "Asylum of the Cybermen". Imagine it would be Cybermen who's conversion didn't completely take and they went insane, or the people still in there fighting the programming. Toss some corrosion effects on the costumes like what was done in that episode with the insane Daleks, play up more of that Cyberman scene in the Pandorica where the head opened up like a trap and attacked Amy, where the rotted skull falls out, more of THAT. It also didn't help that the two Cybermen episodes we got with just them as the antagonists are pretty weak episodes (Nightmare in Silver and Closing Time). So, no, I don't hate them. They're both iconic it just took me a WHILE to find them entertaining, I now appreciate them though and want more of them in the new series. I'm looking forward to seeing what new crazy shit RTD will do with them
@joshuajoshua27327 ай бұрын
Only 2 months before this episode aired David Tennant already announced at the rewards ceremony back in 2008 that he was leaving the show, Matt Smith wasn't yet announced so it was left to fans to theorise and some thought actor David Morrissey (From The Walking Dead) was going to be the next eleventh incarnation of the Doctor some also thought he could be younger version of The First Doctor this episode of course proved to be false. No one to this day understands what was with the doggy cybermen where they came from? or why they were used? I mean i liked it as a new concept but the issue I always had with the modern cybermen was they were too robotic I prefer the cybermen from the Classic series they were far creepier and it worked have you seen "The Tenth Planet" yet brittany? otherwise I won't spoil it to explain why but anyway with Dr. Who nothing ever gets explained properly that's the beauty of it it's the left at the figment of your imagination. I'm ok with the Doctor going without a companion for awhile as it is a show about him because i do feel it gets abit companion centric but also because after 3 tragic losses with Rose, Martha and Donna although Martha was the only one who decided to leave and not left too scarred but traumatised because of what happened with her family under the control of The Master he doesn't want to go through loss and heartache again which I'd why he's having a break from having companions atleast for now.

What did you think of wild blue yonder, the giggle and the church on ruby road?
@BritanyBinges7 ай бұрын
Wild Blue Yonder was interesting but some of the effects took me completely out of the moment ... epecially with character-driven the episode was (which I always love). However, 14's breakdown in the corridor is a top moment of the entire show for me. The Giggle I did like overall but only because of the moments with 14/Donna and 15's intro/seeing Ncuti (I've been reacting to Sex Education over on Patreon and I love his character in that, so it was fun getting to see his first moments as the Doctor). NPH ruined the rest of it for me. For Church on Ruby Road: Some of the parts with the Goblins were on the ridiculous/childish side (which isn't my favorite and is part of why I haven't been stoked about RTD coming back), but I loved the episode as a whole. I already love 15 (he has such a fun energy, but also has still has that depth/darkness, and I was glad to see he's still being affected by The Timeless Child revelation). I also adore Ruby and love seeing the two of them of the play off each other. It got me very excited for the new season.
@joshuajoshua27327 ай бұрын
I agree on "Wild Blue Yonder" but "The Giggle" I really enjoyed even the silliness i don't mind abit of cheesy here and there I like that with Ncuti's 15th Doctor were moving on from the tired trope of angry God Doctor because it's been the becoming a tired trope with the last four Doctors although with Jodie Whittaker it was starting to get away from that alittle but I don't like when the writers humanise the Doctor too much because it makes him less alien and I prefer the alien side of the character i actually thought NPH as the Toymaker was really good but the way he was easily defeated by missing a cricket ball was weak I must admit I hated the bigeneration I would had preferred David had just simply changed into Ncuti because now you no longer have that emotional drama or consequence and making a duplicate TARDIS was really stupid and the dinner scene really through me off it should had ended with the 14th Doctor saying goodluck showing Ncuti and ended it there. I know alot of people are glad to see Donna get her memories back and being reunited with the Doctor I personally think having her ending undone from the end of Series 4 was ruined because now I'll rewatch that scene with little impact the problem with RTD is he doesn't know when to end characters I would have not brought back Tennant as the "14th" Doctor I would have had Jodie regenerated straight into Ncuti and if Donna was to come back this being a Time travel show I would had brought her back at a point before she lost her memory so her ending wouldn't be undone and I was kind of hoping RTD would quietly ignore this Timeless child crap but no it looks like we're sticking to it.

Honestly the cybermen in the show fail 9/10 times because the majority of cyberman stories... dont need them. The cybermen are at their best when the concept is core to the story. The human need to survive at any cost. the horror of paying that cost. The sheer loss of humanity. Very few stories in the classic or new eras actually get that right, but when they do, thats when you get the cybermen the way they were intended. If you finish the 5th doctor's era in classic who, check out the audio story "Spare Parts". Its probably the concept of the cybermen at its best, show or otherwise.
