This is our Reaction to Don't Come to Poland 🇵🇱 (without knowing these 20 things) : Part One
Lately, it seems like Poland is the talk of the town! Because of that, we are planning a few trips to the country this year to get to know the people, culture, and country a bit better. But before we head that way, there are some things that we should know. Are these True??? Should we know these things???

I am afraid that you are confusing the historically distant realities of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (whose heir is actually Belarus, not just Lithuania) with the modern Lithuanian state and nation, which even today retains some anti-Polonism. eg: Not long ago, Lithuanian authorities tried to forcibly Lithuanianize the names of Poles living in Lithuania.

I would change point three to "keep an open mind to political views." We Poles have been through a lot and even the younger generations remember who harmed us in the past. We are open, as we have been throughout our history, to everyone, but we don't like it when someone tries to tell us that their views are better than ours. However, many people (especially young people) are willing to talk about other people's point of view, their political and social views, etc. As for the USA - we treat them as friends, but always with reserve. We, Poles, have our own opinions on many issues and, of course, the entire Western world is our friend, but this doesn't mean that we won't insist on our views.

Guys, the war was over nearly 80 years ago and the fact that Germans invaded us, Britons and French left us alone, then what happened after the war... It's a history. People of today are not to blame. Is the US Poland's best friend? I doubt. The pint is, that we're now building a strong army and buying a lot of staff from them. Americans loves militarists, and even more they love people that gives them money. I believe that most average people in Poland likes Czechs and Slovaks: same western Slavic culture, beautiful places, equally hard times after the war, not much richer, not much poorer and their language sounds funny for us while our one sounds funny for them :)

culturally Poland, Czech, Slovaks, Slovenia etc. are with Germany, Netherlands, partly Belgium, Austria, Switzerland (Northern Italy), the Baltics, Northern France, Denmark,Lichtenstein kind of the same culture of Central Europe - or the influenced region of the Holy Roman Empire. If one just keeps the focus on the relevant things, the structures, the mentality (from being punctual to Christmas markets, 4 climate zone, to similar music taste combinations, club cultures, cafe and restaurant cultures etc, cow milk sphere, architecture, castles and cities) then especially from the greater perspective of most cultures on the planet but also just history then thats quite obvious. of course one from Northern Germany, Denmark or Netherlands sees some differences to Southern Germany, Bavaria, Switzerland, Slovenia, Austria but thats more regional things ...

Regarding cars and pedestrians. In Poland, you absolutely cannot drive a car after drinking alcohol - "0" percent, unlike in other neighboring countries. Pedestrians have the right of way on pedestrian crossings, and as you approach the crossings, the driver should slow down so that he can stop in case the pedestrian intends to cross. In the city, pedestrians cross on pedestrian lanes and at a green signal, crossing on a red signal, even if no one is driving, may result in a fine, and in cities there is often monitoring at intersections. There is an exception, you can cross a road for cars when the pedestrian lanes are more than 100 m away, but at your own risk and you have to be careful, if you get hit, it is the pedestrian who is to blame.

I loved the story of the main vocalist of Sabaton (Joakim Broden) who said that when he was living in poland long time ago he learned a bit of the language. The first three phrases he learned were: good day (dzień dobry), beer (piwo) and the most common curse word (kurwa). so when he went to a bar after a day of work he would say them in this order: Dzień dobry piwo kurwa. I know many people who speak english and would love to help an outsider out but i know for a fact that there are so many who would be really angry about you not speeking the language ... and even more if you're not white ... It is a problem here but i think its slowly dying off with the older population. Also we in poland have a sort of a problem because historically we've been always looked down on by the west. We hate beeing looked down and disrespected by the westerners. Going to poland and not even beeing able to say good day or thank you or sorry in our language I think can be a bit disrespectful.

Favorites neighbour? hmm for me, and maybe some part of Poles it will be Czech Republic. For us Poles, the Czech language sounds very funny and we don't have any unpleasant experiences in the past. And the Czechs have good beer (although we do too) and this is another general reason for friendship. But the most friendly country/nation for us is Hungary. Many common rulers and dynasties, common help in difficult times. There is a saying: "A Pole and a Hungarian are two nephews, both for the saber and for the glass." * Historical curiosity - Even though Hungary sided with the Axis powers during World War II, their attitude towards Poland and Poles was positive. Minister Pál Teleki refused to help Hitler attack Poland in 1939.

Historicaly Poland and Hungary are best friends. There some problems in that friendship after hungarian reaction for Russian invasion - but that is a temporary (our new goverment is also less prohungarian and less proamerican). You said, that Polish are upsed about British and Americans for leaving Poland to USSR after WW II - rather British, because of our former allians. But it isn't a problem now. Polish language is difficult for foreingenrs - that's a fact and we are proud of that!. For Ukrainians, Serbs, Russians or other Slavs it's rather easy. But for other leanguage groups (especially western indo-europian) there will be a problem (both: pronunciaton and grammar). But if You are just a tourists - most of Polish knows english at least at basic level. Stay away from politics! - Yes, but politic argument is partly about culture and history - so staying away is not so simple. Outsite of Warsaw (a capital city - there this conflict is more intensive) most of Polish agrees that politics (all of them) are just jerks. And no, it is much more complicated than division between left and right - so just leave it. Unlike Berlin, in most of Polish cities (and most of towns) You will be able to pay with card (Visa or Maestro). In villages there can be a problem. Poland - Western or Eastern Europe. Well we are in center of continent. In our past we choose Christianity in western tradition, and than in middle ages we were part of that part world. Later Eastern Europe was conquered by Mongols and it left some traditions in that part of world (but Poland wasn't part of that). In XVI-XVIII we were something in the middle between german countries, Russia and Turkish Empire, with our own cultural tradition, that took something from all of them. But in XIX c. most of Poland was under Russian control and since then we know for sure that we are not like them! So calling Polish a Russian is always even worse idea. Poland wasn't part of USSR! Already in 1920 Soviets had tried to conquer Poland, but they were defeated at the Battle of Warsaw (that we are really proud of). After II WW Stalin just took fifth force of anty-nazist alliance (Poland) under his control, and our western friends just let him to do it. Poland was ruled by Polish cumminists, who took orders from Moscow, but it was separate country. And it was the only country under Soviet domination with 3 (not just one) political fractions (but without free elections so guess, who won each time) and the only communist country with small buisness. Whats more collapse of Yalta System in 1989 had started in Poland (agreement at The Round Table, and than first partly free election: 04 June 1989).

As for Poland and its location, enter different words in Google and see a map with how something is pronounced in different countries. Start with tea. Google will throw up other images of other words. Only then can you see that Poland is neither the East nor the West, it is a separate culture (it should be remembered that current Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania, Latvia, and even half of Estonia were in the Polish state, so culturally/linguistically, Poland had an influence on them. Although the Russians quite effectively they dealt with it). Moreover, the Western Slavs are quite a separate culture, as can be seen in, for example, the Czech Republic

no Western democracy ever attacked another Western democracy. Happened exactly ZERO times in history. I repeat for idiots who dont recognize simple patterns: ZERO TIMES! Even more: all countries on the planet who turned to a liberal Western democracy are now among the wealthiest and most developed nations on the planet. And the ones who turned to it since a shorter time develop slowly in the same direction. In difference to for instance left wing/socialist anticapitalist antiwestern left wing countries, an experience the former 'east' have made, but also many countries in Latin America etc. (there is a reason why they developed less than USA/Canada. It is really no rocket science). And Germany today is not Germany of the past (hanging on outdated ideologies while the reality has changed is also one reason why countries failed - instead ALWAYS focus on the reality, wasting time with pointless things) while Russia still behaves like it did back then (to be exact: it behaves like the Zar era 2.0) ...

Its not really left vs right in Polish politics. The current government is a coalition of center-right, center, left and far left parties. The prev gov was just right. That central europe thing is not as serious as people state, but it has a legitimate background. 1 - Polands location is almost dead center in Europe; 2 - Poland was pretty much the melting pot of Western and Eastern culture and politics. Also something worth mentioning is that even under the boot of the Soviet Union as a satellite state Poland was the most liberal state behind the Iron Curtain.

You say well that you don't talk about politics, especially with Poles. A Pole can complain about Poland's politics and life, but if he hears it from a foreigner, you'll be offended. The narrator talks about life being cheaper in Poland, and yes, how you earn abroad and spend it in Poland. Regarding culture, it is unacceptable to talk to someone and keep your hands in your pants pockets, it is acceptable with good male friends, but it is unacceptable when you talk to a woman, then you look like a simpleton and it is disrespectful to the other person. Don't be afraid to try to speak Polish, Poles will help, give advice and will be happy that they can help. The Polish language, especially grammar, is indeed difficult and Poles themselves have difficulty with it. As for cash, you can carry it, thefts are very rare, and there are situations where you need to have small amounts, such as using a flower shop, toilet, or a taxi, in restaurants. You don't tip unless you pay in cash and give, for example, PLN 50. And the meal cost PLN 45. If you say thank you, the waiter assumes that the change is for him, and if you don't say thank you, he will give you the change.

No way! Poles are not best friends of America. It's rather a myth. Although many Poles think America is the best place to live, they are rather not aware of the real life over there. Politics. Nagh, just be aware in Poland there are many weird guys, like those ones who love the USA without any reason, or those who don't want to help immigrants and so on. I as a native Pole, don't want to speak about politics with freaks either. So it is. If you discover many connections in point of view you can go for it, but be honest and don't shy to admit you are not aware of something. I used to travel with no tickets a lot, and I didn't pay a penny, however it was long time ago, and I am not sure if today you could do the same. I guess... yes, however you must get many tips how to do that, and to be honest your chances to that are slim to none. Controllers would assume if you had money to travel abroad you would have money to pay a fine as well. I love Germany! The best neighbors for me are: Czechia, Ukraine, Germany, Belorussia, Slovakia, Lithuania (I love or like them all). The neighbor I don't want to have and I don't like if not hate is... you know it. 😉 Geographically Poland maybe is in the central Europe, however it has a deeper connotation - it is about a cultural sphere of influence. The East is obsolete, cruel, savage and dangerous even today. The history gives too many examples to think different way. Anyway, that's no problem for me to say Poland is in Eastern Europe. 😆 Indeed. Poland was never a part of USSR... I think. That guy lives in Kraków, which is kinda conservative city. Warsaw seems better, but for someone who comes from western part of Poland (and central part of Europe as well 😁) Kraków and even Warsaw are still in the East 🤣🤣🤣 You are a lovely couple! Исторически Москвой владели поляки, но они были настолько добродушны, что разрешили там жить русским. 😁
