My favorite album of all time. From Blackened to Dyers Eve, grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let go. Hetfield is the best down picking rhythm guitar player, period new paragraph. Many of the songs he writes are what I call 5 part; intro, beginning, middle, end, outro and he does it to perfection.

1000% agreed! Its like they KNEW they were about to go radio as shit and just decided "Fuck it... everyone is gonna think we suck by comparison to THIS... So let's KILL it!!"

Definitely another masterpiece. The tempo changes, the softness, aggression, the drum changes in beats and tempo, just a magnificent song all around. One of Metallicas best works of art. Cool reaction Dave. 🔥🔥
@dmwalker242 жыл бұрын
This album is (imo) the peak of Metallica composition. Every single song practically has movements. They took the time to develop musical themes, and then explore them through variation. These are not just songs to fill air time on the radio. These are works of art. Just listen to that recapitulation back to the original theme after the solo. That's classical composition. It's not quite that sophisticated, but honestly a hell of a lot more sophisticated than most rock bands.

Dude you really hit the nail on the head around 5:30 ish when you said there was a kind of, like, calm angry energy coming through in this song. I would call it righteous anger, because it's anger at directed unfair and unjust system of "justice" The whole album kinda has a a sort of anti-establishment theme to it; Blackened talks about MAD and how it can only end in the destruction of the earth. Eye of the Beholder is about the control of freedom of expression by politicians. The Shortest Straw is about suppressing and demonizing certain political schools of thought. One is based on an anti-war book called Johnny Got His Gun. Even the songs that aren't explicitly political, like Dyers Eve or Harvester of Sorrow (which talk about parenting issues like child abuse and sheltering your child from the real world) can be interpreted as being about government and politics if you choose to take it that way. You've inspired me to listen through this entire album again with the lyrics in front of me.

The "tightness" of the main riff is partially due to the drummer accenting the riff with the toms in unison, then at the end it's sounds looser because the drums just play a straight beat under the riff, which opens up the sound more and makes room for the harmony guitars on top. Just masterful arranging from a group of guys in their mid twenties...🤘

The scooped mids tone of this album is amazing. It’s terrible in a live setting because you can’t cut through, but for an album where you can really tweak the mix, it’s a really heavy ass tone that’s in your face with a wall of sound. It’s too bad that the actual bass is really just the guitars, they turned the bass virtually off on this album out of not only grief from cliffs death but also from a lack of confidence in Jason’s ability (which was unfounded, Jason is an amazing bassist, just very different from Cliff and Rob). The song is essentially about our corrupt justice system, still very relevant today. Money is everything, poor people sit in jail, rich people walk.

You used the word aggression. I get more of a sense of quiet desperation and barely restrained frustration. Indeed the whole album is one of unfocused anger and depression. It makes the entire album brilliant. This song in particular is the perfect example. The intro and break down guitar melody is almost a parody. Fake Grandeur and arrogant pomposity gradually dying under its own weight as it hits the wall of harsh guitar tone

@@whatitdodave I appreciate the time you devoted to answering my contestant comment. I recognize the argument you make about people liking what you do but still, I don't see value of it. People tend to indulge themselves in the least valuable behaviours (e.g. pornography) so it doesn't stand as an argument itself - it's not enough to say that people like it. Not for me. The phenomenon started about five years ago, when people started posting their reaction-videos to the 'Force Awakens" trailer. I see the entrepreneurship aspect of it but I call into question that it stands for anything but self-indulgence.
