Whats so amazing for most of us is that no matter how many times we hear a NW song,or watch a NW reaction ( especially a great one from someone like Eric)it NEVER gets old, they are simply one of a kind and untouchable.

Skeleton Dance! Tuomas is the master at building through layers and peeling back to let each performer shine without diminishing the entire package. Credit to each band member for this theory. I used to roadie for a band and all they did was fight about not being heard, each one trying to upstage the other. The Nightwish chemistry is part of the magic.

I am a 65 year old classic rock fan. I first saw Nightwish by chance a few years ago. Since then I have listened to them almost every day. I’ve never seen a band quite like them. The more I hear them, the more I like them.

I’m now 70 & my first time seeing one of their videos was Poet & the Pendulum! After seeing that, how could you not listen to more of their music & watch their videos! I was hooked! I can’t count the number of times I’ve watched their videos & I never get tired of them!

Kai looks so smooth and effortless with all the things he’s doing on that kit. Seeing him live was awesome. He’s so talented and does so many subtle things that add depth to the sound on the drums it’s really impressive.

Kai added 5 extra pieces to the kit specifically because of this song. :D When they started composing, Kai went "we're gonna need a bigger kit". :D

Think that this is the Human:II:Nature song that best highlights Kai. Always been a fan of the drums, love when they get a bit of showcasing. Friendly reminder: bassist is Jukka Koskinen, from Wintersun, although the album was recorded with Marko.

I love that Tuomas is now in the center of the stage, just to watch him headbanging and watching him play those keyboards is worth watching Nightwish alone. Looks like he gets more video time too and that is great.

This was the first album written with Kai as the official drummer, so Tuomas was able to write to his abilities. And I believe I read that Kai had to add extra pieces to his kit to meet what Tuomas wrote for him.

It helps that Troy is one of the worlds best Uillean pipe players, also Jukka is a lot more relaxed on stage here which has made him a more fluid player which suits this song, and he has always worked well with Kai, who is one of the tighest drummers I have ever seen. Tribal shows why people should stop underestimating the Human II Nature album. Troy is a really good harmony singer to Floors lead, though in Harvest he proves how good a singer he really is.

When they initially released this video I immediately fell I love with it & I always wondered if they would ever play it live & what would it sound like…..well, they never disappoint! As always this was brilliant! And to see Marko’s replacement ( I believe his name is Jukka), for the first time was amazing! I will always miss Marko, but Jukka was amazing! 😊💜💚

This song is whole bunch of awesome (I have seen this Live myself, and it was Epic) !!! And you are right, this is Kai's song. To do this song , Kai added 6 extra drums on his drumkit ! "Tribal" has a similar story behind it than "Weak Fantasy" (Religion). And that bass player: Jukka "Gentle Giant" Koskinen (now tallest member in Nightwish). Thank you for this reaction Eric!!! You are correct, Tuomas is a thriller/horror fanatic. Bless the child is a great example of it (with movie sounds in the background) The haunting tension in many songs is something you can not resist. You are going on his yourney, if you want to or not😆 But there is also a rebel side in Tuomas that really pops up in Human Nature. Thanks!❤

I love how hard they go on this and I am glad Kai is getting some love and being singled out for his brilliant drumming, and Troy for the pipes. I was lucky enough to see this live last year in Birmingham and when this come on it was like the world was ending, so hard.

The closest I’ve seen to Troy with his pipes/flutes being integrated into metal is Feurshwanz. They use a violin, and I’ve seen a hurdy gurdy as well. They have been described as midieval metal.

You're absolutely right that this song is a Kai Show. When they were developing this song, Kai decided that he needs 5 extra things on his drum kit. I'm not sure which exact things, I'm not a drummer, but might as well be that tambourine among other things. In any case, he felt like he has to do something extra about this song and came up with a shopping list to help him express what he had in mind.

Interesting reflection about Tuomas' influences, there must be many but as his cat is or was named Vangelis, I doubt he was a huge fan of our Greek synthesizer master 🙂

Cool reaction about a rollercoaster vibe song, one of the best Nightwish songs ever!! Concerning gothic metal I (being Dutch) recommend you some mighty Dutch gothic metal bands Blackbriar, Epica, Within Temptation, Delain, Vuur and The Gathering (both with Anneke van Giersbergen).

I would love to see your reaction to Kate Bush and her The Ninth Wave suite of songs on "side 2" of her Hounds Of Love album. It's a conceptual piece about a woman lost at sea at night told within 7 songs. The soundscape is so cinematic and is guided by her beautiful voice and absolutely genius mind. I think at some point Tuomos had heard it and had been inspired. At least I like to think that lol.

Thank you Eric. I loved your discussion of how good Tuomas is at layering in a sub-mood within the context of the song. Another excellent example of this is what he does in the middle section of The Greatest Show on Earth, where there is a scene that evokes a predator chasing something through the jungle. He evokes that sense of being stalked that you so eloquently brought out.

Love the musical analysis, thanks once again. IMO _Tribal_ is the angriest song from Human :II: Nature - and I love it! This is a great performance too, but if you haven't seen it I also recommend (for your own enjoyment) watching the lyric video, so you can fully appreciate the skeleton dance...

Perhaps it's just my observation, but is Emppu getting less video attention since 2022, compared to the previous live tours, say Wacken? It also showed IMO during the shows at Pinkpop '22 and Deichbrand. Even his solo parts during this video aren't really picked up by whoever did the video directing... Is it Emppu's own choice to stay out of the limelight or is the video director displaying some favoritism? Since Marko left, Floor is the obvious close-up choice as she sings 99% of the songs, but it just seems that the other band members aren't getting as much "air time", because this not the Floor Jansen band.

Wacken '13, Tampere, Wembley, Buenos Aires, Amsterdam '22 was always their own film crew and post-production. Tuomas naturally follows everything that happens from the side. Pinkpop, Deichbrand, Hellfest are these big European festivals where the organizer has its own film crew and director(s), and everything happens live. Nightwish Arena has remastered many of those clips. When it's their own crew and post-production, Emppu is seen much more.
