The Germans would also use captured B-17s that were escorted by fighters so AA gunners were ordered to not shoot at a captured B-17 escorted by a BF-109 It's also not worth something reporting because what's the most likely scenario? You waste your superior's time be reporting a flight that was already mandated.
@cytorakdemon3 жыл бұрын
The first thing Stigler notices is the B-17 isn't shooting at him, upon getting closer he sees how badly the plane is. He could easily shoot it down and earn the Knight's Cross medal, but with the B-17 in its condition, it would be like shooting down a parachute. So he pulls alongside and signals for Charlie to land. Charlie refuses, even though the low altitude and slow speed would make them easy picking for the approaching Anti-Air defense line. Stigler repositions his fighter in escort formation and flies with the B-17. Only once passed the defense line, does Charlie realize what happened as Stigler salutes and wiggles his wings before banking off.

"If I ever see you shooting a man in a parachute I will kill you myself when you land" Those were the words (from my memory anyway) Stigler said that his commanding officer once told him. He later said that the B-17 was like their parachute and that it would be wrong to shoot it down. So instead he escorted it, AAA gunners not firing on the B-17 with a German fighter so close. It was a true mark of genuine honour in the skies over Europe. I can only imagine how Charlie Brown must have felt the next time he took off in a B-17.

In the song they sing "he risked his life two times that day" but really he risked it three times. 1: Approaching a B17. The thing is bristling with guns. He couldn't possibly know for sure that they wouldn't shoot him down. 2: Escorting the B17 over German FlaK. They wre flying low and slow, so it probably wouldn't have been too hard for AA to shoot them down. 3: Defying orders and helping the enemy. He could have been shot for treason.

Especially knowing the fact that those were real lives, real heroes, living, breathing people, some of them maybe weren't even as strong and as capable physically as i am, but still, they are heroes, and i'm not. In World War 1 their was a code between opposing Pilots. Knights of the air Chivalry type of code. Most Pilots on both sides stuck to this code. No shooting down of wounded planes or a plane with it's guns jammed. No shooting of downed Pilots. in WW 2 this code still existed in some German Pilots. The Nazi SS did not house and Guard Allied Airforce prisoners of war. The German Airforce did. They were housed, fed and treated a lot better than other POW's. While examples of this in WW 2 were not common like in WW 1 events such as this did occur on both sides.

Early on sure, they would even salute each other as they passed. Sometimes though they would take pot shots at each other with sidearms, unsurprisingly this was not very effective. Then someone figured out how to attach a timing chain to an engine and machine gun such that you could fire the gun and not hit your propeller blades. It was way less friendly up there after that.

What happened was that the German pilot suggested that they should land, being captured would be better than being shot over the atlantic wall. He couldn't shoot because he saw how the B17 was hanging on by a thread, and his superior had said if he ever sees a pilot shoot down an enemy "on a parachute" he'll shoot that pilot because that's not "honorable". And for him, that mangled bomber was as good as a parachute.
@ugrasergun3 жыл бұрын
Franz Stigler's commander - Gustav Rödel who is very famous German Flying Ace - told them "You are fighter pilots first, last, always. If I ever hear of any of you shooting at an enemy in a parachute, I'll shoot you down myself! It is not for your enemy that you do this! You do this for yourself, for your soul, so that one day if you survive this war, you can live with yourself." before their first mission. And Stigler said later shooting that plane would be the same as shooting someone in a parachute.

Iam sure there are pletny of war stories like that and Iam glad that some make it to the public eye. Shows everybody was just a human being in the end.

You really should listen to the entire 'Heroes' album, as it's full of songs inspired by stories like this one. Like 'Smoking Snakes', about when three Brazillain soldiers had the balls to fight against a full company of Germans. They all fell, but the Germans buried them and left a grave marker saying 'Here lies three Brazillian Heroes'. Or 'The Ballad of Bull', about corporal Leslie "Bull" Allen, an Australian stretcher barer, who charged directly into the line of fire at Mt Tambu and single-handedly saved the lives of 12 men. Or 'Hearts of Iron', when the 12th Army of the Wermacht ignored Hitler's orders to throw themselves at the Red Army, and they formed a protective corridor to allow civillians and the remnants of the 9th army to cross the river out of Berlin and escape and surrender to the Americans and British, and saved the lives of quarter of a million people. It's an album that celebrates the triumph of ordinary men chosing humanity over barbarism in a barbaric time.

For reference, the temperature at that altitude at that time was about -74F. The German pilot (Stigler), first saw the dead tail gunner (reminding him of his older brother who had died earlier in the war in a bomber). He noticed they weren't shooting back at him, then he saw the wounded crew through the huge hole in the plane. He said he thought of his commanding officer, who once told him "if I ever hear of you shooting a man in a parachute, I'll shoot you myself" (his statement was longer than that but that's the important part). Stigler said that to him, the condition of the plane made it the same as a parachute and he couldn't shoot them down. He also said that he knew that whatever he did that day, he would have to live with for the rest of his life. So he decided to go by his conscience instead of his orders. He first tried to get them to land in Germany, and they refused. He then tried to get them to divert to Sweden, but they didn't understand. So he escorted them over the firing lines and to the open sea. Then saluted and flew off. He later said the salute was his way of saying "good luck, I hope you make it home".

Each has 3 inch pictures of B-17's, B-24's, P-51's ect that were lost that month. For the height of the spring bombing campaign of 1943 the 8 foot tall panels were covered in B-17's that never came home. Each plane was 11 men lost. I felt very small and humbled the day I saw that.

hello MMA Dad. Odd things happen in wars. This, really happened. A bomber that had taken several direct hits before releasing it's bombs on it's target, was pounced upon by several enemy fighters as she was making her way home with one engine knocked out. The attacks damaged two more engines and still the plane flew towards home. A single German fighter chose to actually look at his target, and maneuvered several times to look it over from all sides. He could very easily have shot down the bomber, but he noted that the crew, even though manning their guns, were not shooting at him. Since they chose not to shoot at him, he chose not to fire upon them, and instead, escorted them at least as far as the English Channel. Where, he saluted the bomber's pilot and turned for home himself. This is one of those rare 'human' moments of Combat. Where at least one person on one side of a battle recognizes the Humanity of his foe, and does NOT engage them in further combat. In this case, showing Mercy, and Honor, by not firing upon what was an 'easy kill', and instead escorting them most of the way home. All too rare, such things still occur in Combat, even to this day.

Such a show of mercy is one of the greatest acts that would require more because this act required a lot of courage from a Nazi pilot because he knew for sure the danger that by flying close to an enemy plane he could have been shot down as a traitor and court-martialed for a war crime and sentenced to death! 🎖🎖👍👍✈✈ I don''t think it was easy for this Nazi pilot to keep silent about the 50-year amnesty for the coalition plane, but he certainly knew the consequences if the matter came out because martial law was merciless towards traitors.

@MMA Dad: I'll be one to tell you: A B-17 is not a big plane. It is cramped. The worst position to be was a belly gunner, as it suffered the most casualties. When I was a teenager, I took a tour of a B-17 when it landed at our local airport -- and it was one of the most eye-opening experiences of my life, and it drove home for me what these aircrews went through in World War II. If you want to know more about what flying a B-17 was like, I recommend Memphis Belle, a movie about a real plane that was retired after 25 missions.

Unless I am mistaken the german pilot was trained by someone who threaten to shoot anyone who shot at a downed plane or parachute. The pilot viewed the damaged plane as a parachute.

but this is the same as finishing off to death a fighter lying in the ring, unfortunately he received letters with threats from the Nazis and a neighbor from Canada, rest in peace, you are a real warrior!

Thank you Franz Stigler wherever you are now, you showed the World that not every German Soldier of WWII was a Nazi, you are one of those rare German WWII Heros. Btw.... the Olde Pub still flyes today: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oqWkm4Z7ftiKb5o

Not sure if it was said before: The actions of Stigler were also motivated and even inspired by his commanding officer. The CO was said to have made it clear that, should he ever witness or learn that one of his men shot at a pilot going down on a parachute, he would personally put a bullet in the head of that man. And as far as Stigler was concerned, Brown was as close to going down on a parachute as you get without actually hanging off a parachute. As was written before, he was apparently surprised that Ye Olde Pub was still flying in the first place, given how badly she had been damaged.

Adding on, the man who told him that was Gustav Roedel, who was like a mentor to Stigler and a man Stigler deeply respected. He wasn't merely his CO. He also said it right before Stigler's first combat mission, so it left an impression

For your information, the guy who was following that plane would have got his medal if he shot down one more plane and due to this he had to wait to receive one at a later time.

Also, i dunno if you're religious or not, but anyway i would suggest you to react to the Christian metal band Theocracy. They have a very deep lyrics, vocalist has an amazing voice and overall music is great. My personal favorite is "Laying the demon to rest" and i think their "As the World Bleeds" song is very relevant for the modern times, very good and insightful analysis of thought process of many people nowadays.

Hey MMA Dad, know a bit more of about this story due to The Mighty Jingle's video. The person who trained Frantz Stigler told him that if he ever catches him shoot someone who abandoned his aircraft, he will shoot Stigler himself. The Ye Olde Pub was akin to some who parachuted out of their aircraft, helpless.

For anyone who doesn’t know the reason the pilot escorted the bomber was to prevent the German anti-air guns from firing on the bomber. They didn’t fire because they didn’t wanna hit their own plane in attempt to down the bomber
