Extra good because I don't think anyone mentioned "merry men" in that scene which means that Worf is familiar enough with the Robin Hood fables to have objected to it without being told. Not surprising given that he grew up in the Federation, but interesting nonetheless.

Lol, Vash is one o' my favorite one-off TNG characters. Yes, apparently, of the main cast, Gates and Marina were actually the only ones who'd had prior training for swordfighting and have since expressed their dissatisfaction that their characters had to be reduced to fighting via smashing pottery over the heads of baddies (and subsequently smiling and looking pleasantly surprised they pulled it off), while the men had to get their own training. Most shows insist on doing the ambiguous relationship for romantic tension stuff. Here it's mostly under-the-surface deep affection between characters, but not enough to be explicitly acknowledged mosta the time. If a character has a romance with usually a guest character, the other character with the unacknowledged feelings either doesn't have a problem with it or, if they do, they realize that's their own issue and not the person considering the possibility. But it's hilarious when both Beverly and Vash will give Picard a hard time without any effort whatsoever.

next episode has one of my favorite quotes from all of Sci fi, I love Drumhead. it begins to show the flaws in the "utopian federation" that really begins to get fleshed out later in TNG, before opening the throttle in DS9. The only other major flaw shown so far, was with Miles Obrien when the Cardassians were first on screen, and Obrien and the one spoon head at the bar had a little chat, about the border war.

Knew Katrina would love this one. Always nice to see Vash. This episode has a sequel in DS9. It was criticized for bringing over too many TNG elements into DS9 too early, and some comparisons being too obvious. But I liked it. In retrospect, it's a bit hard to explain that particular episode of DS9 (and Vash's knowledge or lack thereof) for certain spoiler-y reasons. But it does make for some fun head canon, in terms of what Vash did or didn't know, what she chose to reveal or not reveal and why. (in-universe, that is. Out-of-universe it was obviously because certain things just hadn't been set up yet.) And, for that matter, what Q chose to reveal, and not reveal to the Federation...

I really hated this episode as a kid, as I found it too cringey, but I've softened to it over the years and come to embrace the silliness! If it happened too often, it would be annoying, but a silly episode now and again can be a welcome break from the more serious stuff. I was surprised that neither Paula or Katrina were a little put out by the slightly sexist fight scene, where Troi and Crusher are reduced to smashing pots over guard's heads. I remember reading an interview with Gates McFadden where she said she was a bit annoyed by that as she's fully trained in stage fencing and one of the men had any experience prior to this episode, yet all she gets to do is look a little flustered as she drops a pot on someone's head! Even for me as a young boy watching in the early 90s, I found it weirdly outdated to see the women acting so uncharacteristically "girly," (for want of a better term). Also, mentioning DS9, you are getting closer and closer to when it aired in relation to TNG. If you do decide to watch it (and I really hope you do), I hope you do it in proper release order, alongside TNG, rather than wait until you've finished TNG and then start DS9. Whilst there isn't a lot of crossover, there are a few story threads that make more sense if both series are watched in parallel.

@@rafetizer Yes, they obviously just decided to follow what would be more fitting for the legend. But at the same time, the TNG crew are not from that period and it would have made for an unorthodox tactic that the "baddies," wouldn't have predicted. I don't think McFadden was really angry about it per se, but thought it was somewhat ironic that all the men had tp act like master swordsmen, yet none of them knew what they were doing and the one person who actually knew how to sword fight got lumbered with a flower pot!

I find the TNG Worf very 2 dimensional compared to the DS9 Worf. Here he's humorless and an object of derision; on DS9 he has a sense of humor and it's dark. Plus he gets to actually do stuff whereas on TNG he's always told to stand down. I''m not a fan of Q episodes or holodeck ones, stick with reality, focus your imagination on the future, the characters, the interactions. For me Kira is one of the best, she has layers that are believable and compelling, she moves me. Same goes for Sisko, Avery Brooks is an excellent actor.

TNG really made Worf a one dimensional character for the first couple of seasons. He was the "Klingon", always gruff and always looking for a battle. I thought the portrayal of Worf originally was annoying. Yes, he was a Klingon, but he had been raised by humans and had attended and graduated from Starfleet Academy. From those experiences he would have been more adjusted than they presented. I enjoyed how they eventually did more with his character, giving him more background, and depth to his character, later in TNG and then in DS9.
