I think the joke is that Akira Toriyama's name sounds like the Japanese word for bird. Also the entire joke is a reference to one of the theme songs. Sorry I couldn't explain it better.

Some people have explained it, but I'll do so as well. 1) The creator of Dragon Ball (Z) is Akira Toriyama. "Tori" in Japanese means 'Bird' (and hence Toriyama's personal studio is called Bird Studio). 2) In the original Dragon Ball Z theme song, there's a line that translates to something like "If I find a dinosaur I will teach it to balance on a ball.', which is basically an allegory for finding wondrous things and making them do amazing things. 3) In the Abridged Version of Movie 5: (Revenge Of) Cooler, Team Fourstar inserts lines on how Goku sees a bird, says he's going to name it "Toriyama", and when he revives it with Super Saiyan power or whatever, tells the bird/Toriyama to go 'teach a dinosaur to ride a ball' 4) And so it ends here, with Android 16 talking to a bird, and through his dialogue reveals that the bird did just that. He found a dinosaur-"I would love to see your dinosaur" and trained it to ride on a ball-"It does WHAT?"

And even though you probably won't see this comment here is a popular theory why the timelines switched: Future Trunks traveling to the past did indeed cause a Butterfly Effect. One little thing can drastically alter the future. In his time Goku died of heart failure and Vegeta never became a Super Saiyan and so Dr. Gero saw no need to make them super powerful and instead made them bloodthirsty. That is why they are weaker but more evil in his time. In this timeline however, Goku started to take the medicine so he survived longer. So Dr. Gero made them more powerful and left their personalities mostly untouched. That's why in the timeline we are watching, they're much stronger but more likeable. Hope this helps. It's mostly a fan theory but I hold it to be true cuz it makes sense. Ciao!

Okay, Spaz Boys, so the joke regarding the Toriyama bird and the dinosaur in the beginning is a reference to a joke from the DBZ Abridged movie 'Revenge of Cooler'. In that movie, a bird that Goku named Toriyama died, and when Goku goes Super Saiyan and brings it back to life he tells the bird to find a dinosaur and teach it to ride a bike. That bird in that movie, is the same bird that Android 16 was talking to in the beginning here. The joke is that the Toriyama bird actually DID find a dinosaur and teach it to ride a bike. You'd actually be surprised how many people on the original video missed this joke, really.

The Toriyama bit was a call-back to the Cooler movie, which was in itself a reference both to the creator of Dragon Ball (Akira Toriyama) and the lyrics to the original Japanese opening to Dragon Ball Z (which mentioned teaching a dinosaur to ride a ball). I'm still not sure I get the entire joke, but there you go. Remember: this show works on multiverse theory, not Back to the Future single-timeline logic. Already, the events that led to Future Trunk's seriously shitty timeline have been altered; the mere fact that the characters knew about the Androids ahead of time (due to Trunks time-traveling) means that that future wasn't going to happen. But that timeline still exists, and Trunks can go back to it with his time machine. In other words, there is absolutely no way for anyone, Trunks included, to know what's going to happen in this timeline. Trunks caused it to begin to exist with his time-traveling, and it's now being written (if that makes sense).

If the Z Fighters had stopped to think for a moment, they should've realized that they have no serious incentive to hunt down/kill Androids 17 and 18. And I mean in both the canon series and in the abridged. In Trunks' future, the androids specifically go out of their way to hunt down and kill every one. And they do it for shits and giggles. The androids here though make it a point to *not* kill the Z Fighters despite having the opportunity more than once. The only person they wanna kill is Goku, also for shits and giggles. And mostly just because 16 wants to. They could be very easily convinced to not do that, and to also not go on a worldwide killing spree. They're stronger but also less intrinsically evil than the ones in the future.
