Chase, I'm so happy that you're reacting to Band-Maid again. You are the first reactor that ignited my interest for the band. I still replay your episodes starting from "Thrill" --I smile when you suddenly realize they are wearing maid outfits... your impassioned plea to "take care" of these ladies because they are"very important" to music itself stays with me today. There are only a handful of reactors that can break down songs to their technical and artistic qualities. They are the ones I seek, not those that only tell me how much they like a song. I've been hoping that you would check out their newer material as in Unseen World, Sense, and their Acoustic concert.

First person I saw a reaction video to “Thrill,” which was my intro song to the Madiacrity of it all. I felt the same way: this band is important. I’ll always remember that.

I believe I too once wrote to Chase in admiration his ability to break down a video performance. I described his ability was much like a trip I took to the Salvador museum with my daughter. I took one look and said, "cool, a melting clock." My daughter replied back, "No dad, there's so much more going on here, look deeper." Chase makes me look deeper into any and every MV

Great to see your reaction again. Band-Maid made this 14 song acoustic concert very special by changing the groupings of the members. I hope you have a chance to view the archived stream. Here’s how they arranged things: 7 songs played by the entire band 2 songs with only Saiki (lead vocals) and Kanami (lead guitar) 2 songs with the trio of Saiki, Kanami and Misa (bass) 2 songs with Miku (vocals, rhythm guitar), Akane (drums) and Misa 1 song with Saiki, Miku and Akane on the cajon. As others have mentioned, the ticket includes access to a second stream with the band talking over the performance. Its hilarious and gives a great look into how they interact with each and how they were feeling during the filming.

It is a truly remarkable concert. One song, Smile, they had done before as acoustic, the other 13 they re-wrote for this concert. Along with the full band they did various combinations. Saiki & Kanami with just an acoustic guitar and Kanami harmonizing with Saiki. Saiki, Kanami, and Misa. And Miku with Akane and Misa with Miku playing lead guitar on one of her songs, Sayonakidori , where she is the lead singer. Akane used a cajon in one song instead of the drum set. And they made Misa and Akane join the vocal chorus in a song. They even did one song from their 1st album, Maid in Japan. Along with the normal concert recording they have a 2nd recording with commentary by them in Japanese with English subtitles. They were very nervous because the room was so well lit they could see the cameramen and the rest of the crew watching them which they normally can't. They also joked they couldn't remember anymore how to play the original songs.

Always a pleasure to see you on YT. If you get time check out the entire acoustic concert - you'll get to see Band-Maid breaking down into a variety of smaller sub-units. Not so many bands can have the rhythm section do songs and sound as good as the full band. You'll get to see Akane and MISA doing the backing vocals for Miku. Not sure about the band being comfortable - they were all very nervous and didn't know where to look - they had the "staff" sat in front them watching every move.

As you mentioned "authenticity" and "purity" in acoustic music and your lack of experience of BAND-MAID's acoustics you should really check out their acoustic version of Puzzle, only Kanami and Saiki. I'll occasionally see smarmy comments saying that BAND-MAID sucks because the only truly great instrument master in the group is Akane. First, I think people are selling Misa short. Second, Kanami may not be a great guitarist (damned good, better than any of the complainers will ever be themselves, but Stevie Ray Vaughn she ain't), but that's also not her primary role. Instead of focusing on whether her solos are sufficiently face-melting, I challenge anyone to find a better and more consistently solid instrumental designer and arranger in rock today. Likewise with Miku. Obviously she's not the best guitarist (and for many of us, the story of her path to playing guitar is part of the charm), but she's a fantastic lyricist, both in terms of semantics and semiotics and also in the way she bends phonemes and vocal structures to her will. If she wasn't writing for hard rock, she could kill as s hip-hop writer. And like Kanami, Saiki is damned good at her craft but not a legend. But she's also the one directing the vocal melodies and keeping the feel of the band consistent. If all that matters in music is pure technical execution, then why bother listening to humans play at all? Makes more sense to just listen to something crafted in a DAW out of square waves. BAND-MAID is the best because of the multiple roles that everyone plays and the emergent properties that come out of bringing this particular group to work together.
@interstellardave3 жыл бұрын
All good points. I would add, in a more defiant tone, About SRV: “Kanami Tono” he ain’t”. Meaning that she brings her own things to the table that makes comparisons more equal. Seriously, i’ve been a fan of a lot of great guitarists over the years and Kanami fits right in there with them in my mind. First off, I don’t really know how hard various things are, so I can’t rate guitarists on technical ability the way actual guitarists could. What I do know is that she plays some of the most consistently interesting stuff I’ve ever heard. My god, the riffs!!! And her compositional skills are top notch. I’ve heard amazing guitarists go off so many times… but they don’t always make for good songs. She, however, seems to have the midas touch when writing songs that have great guitar work throughout and yet she’s not even trying to steal the show.
