From Japan Welcome back to Chase. I'm glad to see you again. The world has been in turmoil for two years now. I also continue to have a daily life where I can't go out freely like I used to. Now, in the midst of turmoil, I feel that art is a source of support. For me, music supports the joy of living and the hope for the future. I am grateful to BAND-MAID.

Chase, I'm so happy that you're reacting to Band-Maid again. You are the first reactor that ignited my interest for the band. I still replay your episodes starting from "Thrill" --I smile when you suddenly realize they are wearing maid outfits... your impassioned plea to "take care" of these ladies because they are"very important" to music itself stays with me today. There are only a handful of reactors that can break down songs to their technical and artistic qualities. They are the ones I seek, not those that only tell me how much they like a song. I've been hoping that you would check out their newer material as in Unseen World, Sense, and their Acoustic concert.

I believe I too once wrote to Chase in admiration his ability to break down a video performance. I described his ability was much like a trip I took to the Salvador museum with my daughter. I took one look and said, "cool, a melting clock." My daughter replied back, "No dad, there's so much more going on here, look deeper." Chase makes me look deeper into any and every MV

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I don’t care… I think first reactions are overrated. I would love to see some videos where you have seen something multiple times. You would notice things you didn’t see or hear the first time and have even more great insights. Plus I know you have music you love that you feel like you can’t do a video on because it wouldn’t be a first reaction. It feels like a missed opportunity. Thumb this up if you want to see Chase do some deep dives and share some of his favorite things with us. If not, I still think your content is tremendous. ✌️

Welcome back Chase. So good to see you again. You're missed around these parts. Oh, and that guy, Wave Potter, he's also one of the nicest and most informed reactors around, kinda lot like you. As always, a great reaction. I love how you come up with new ways to describe things, such as referring to palm muting as a mother trying to keep her young kids in line. Like "Bubble", Catharsis was a great song to vibe to. When you come around to B-M again, maybe consider something a little bit more frantic, such as "Black Hole" live or something a bit more emotional, like "Puzzle" live and live acoustic. Thanks again.

I'll occasionally see smarmy comments saying that BAND-MAID sucks because the only truly great instrument master in the group is Akane. First, I think people are selling Misa short. Second, Kanami may not be a great guitarist (damned good, better than any of the complainers will ever be themselves, but Stevie Ray Vaughn she ain't), but that's also not her primary role. Instead of focusing on whether her solos are sufficiently face-melting, I challenge anyone to find a better and more consistently solid instrumental designer and arranger in rock today. Likewise with Miku. Obviously she's not the best guitarist (and for many of us, the story of her path to playing guitar is part of the charm), but she's a fantastic lyricist, both in terms of semantics and semiotics and also in the way she bends phonemes and vocal structures to her will. If she wasn't writing for hard rock, she could kill as s hip-hop writer. And like Kanami, Saiki is damned good at her craft but not a legend. But she's also the one directing the vocal melodies and keeping the feel of the band consistent. If all that matters in music is pure technical execution, then why bother listening to humans play at all? Makes more sense to just listen to something crafted in a DAW out of square waves. BAND-MAID is the best because of the multiple roles that everyone plays and the emergent properties that come out of bringing this particular group to work together.
@interstellardave
@interstellardave 2 жыл бұрын
All good points. I would add, in a more defiant tone, About SRV: “Kanami Tono” he ain’t”. Meaning that she brings her own things to the table that makes comparisons more equal. Seriously, i’ve been a fan of a lot of great guitarists over the years and Kanami fits right in there with them in my mind. First off, I don’t really know how hard various things are, so I can’t rate guitarists on technical ability the way actual guitarists could. What I do know is that she plays some of the most consistently interesting stuff I’ve ever heard. My god, the riffs!!! And her compositional skills are top notch. I’ve heard amazing guitarists go off so many times… but they don’t always make for good songs. She, however, seems to have the midas touch when writing songs that have great guitar work throughout and yet she’s not even trying to steal the show.

Great to see your reaction again. Band-Maid made this 14 song acoustic concert very special by changing the groupings of the members. I hope you have a chance to view the archived stream. Here’s how they arranged things: 7 songs played by the entire band 2 songs with only Saiki (lead vocals) and Kanami (lead guitar) 2 songs with the trio of Saiki, Kanami and Misa (bass) 2 songs with Miku (vocals, rhythm guitar), Akane (drums) and Misa 1 song with Saiki, Miku and Akane on the cajon. As others have mentioned, the ticket includes access to a second stream with the band talking over the performance. Its hilarious and gives a great look into how they interact with each and how they were feeling during the filming.

Sorry for this essay. TLDR; ROCK AND ROLL!!! It is good that you are back. It's nice that you mentioned Wave Potter. You (or your viewers) might also enjoy Ryan Mear or Champ of Medium. All of them make music, all of them are passionate about music, none of them are academics. Jbf Music & Guitar does more technical analysis, and he's more academic. There are probably others, but these are ones I've seen recently. "Music is medicine" and music is air. It's there for an instant, then evaporates. It is a mystery how someone half a world away can strum a guitar and sing a song, convert it into ones and zeros, and send it into the ether. I can receive it and convert it back into air pressure waves that tickle the hairs inside my head and they can make me feel something so deeply. I've never met them. I don't speak their language. I'm not even the same gender, and yet ... It is a wonderful mystery. Regarding who are the "best" musicians ... music is not an athletic contest. No one fires a starter's pistol and there's no light beam stopping a timer at the finish line. There is no objective "best." Music is art and expression. It is entirely subjective. The goal is to communicate, to get the listener to feel something. Muscians who can play impressively are great, but if they can't communicate their feelings then, in my opinion, they aren't very good muscians. There are blues guitarists who can't play a major scale, but if they can get their audience to feel better about the struggles in their lives, then they are good musicians. If someone can calm your soul, if they can heal your heart, then they are good muscians. I think it was Louis Armstrong that answered a question about his opinion of rock and roll, "There is good music, and good music played badly. I prefer good music." Also, wabi sabi. There is beauty in the transience of life, in our struggles, and in the imperfections that come from age and experience. If they break a teacup, the Japanese do not discard it; they repair it with gold leaf and it becomes even more beautiful. Wabi sabi. I'd love to hear you compare and contrast this acoustic to the original recording. To my ears, they are quite a lot different in texture, but have a similar airy quality. The original solo is a lot more extended and more modal (but still short, because Kanami Tōno), and I'd love to hear your take on it. It seems you don't mention lyrics much, (and translations from Japanese to English are tricky) but I wouldn't mind hearing commentary on how the lyrics fit the music. "Catharsis" is track 13 from the album "Conqueror." I thought it was available on KZbin in a playlist of the "Conqueror" album on the Band-Maid channel (not a music video, just an image with audio) but it doesn't seem to be there anymore. Hmmm. The track should be available from Apple or Spotify, though. You can put a camera on your lava lamp and put it in a window on the screen if you feel like we need to look at something. However, we really need to see you grabbing the greebles.

The comment about how the best musicians (and by extension artist in general) are nameless people hidden away in a studio somewhere you never really know of as a person was sadly accurate. I love music but my focus is more ink/watercolor drawing/painting and photography. There are people that go their whole lives taking photos as a hobby they love and obsess over in the background without anyone else knowing. They pass on and when their portfolio of a lifetime of work is discovered there can be a legendary/world renown photographer born overnight (look up Vivian Maie for an example of that).

It is a truly remarkable concert. One song, Smile, they had done before as acoustic, the other 13 they re-wrote for this concert. Along with the full band they did various combinations. Saiki & Kanami with just an acoustic guitar and Kanami harmonizing with Saiki. Saiki, Kanami, and Misa. And Miku with Akane and Misa with Miku playing lead guitar on one of her songs, Sayonakidori , where she is the lead singer. Akane used a cajon in one song instead of the drum set. And they made Misa and Akane join the vocal chorus in a song. They even did one song from their 1st album, Maid in Japan. Along with the normal concert recording they have a 2nd recording with commentary by them in Japanese with English subtitles. They were very nervous because the room was so well lit they could see the cameramen and the rest of the crew watching them which they normally can't. They also joked they couldn't remember anymore how to play the original songs.

OK, this song is in Dmaj, but the beat is weird...kind of a half-time 4s. BTW, MISA is the master of the glissando. Also, I have never heard Kanami slop a note; she is perfection. This is also incredible enunciation by Saiki and Miku is doing a great job with the high harmony (in fact, her range is actually quite remarkable at times).

Although I love what each of them brings to their songs, I have to point out that Misa's creativity on her bass really brings a more musical sound than I am used to hearing from a bassist.....love it!! Cheers Chase!

So , dropped in to see the other guys reaction, and lo and behold.. he pauses more than you do hahaha. Always psyched when YT tells me you have dropped another vid. The wait makes them all that more special.

Another fabulous and insightful reaction Chase. That whole acoustic concert was purely phenomenal! As you mentioned "authenticity" and "purity" in acoustic music and your lack of experience of BAND-MAID's acoustics you should really check out their acoustic version of Puzzle, only Kanami and Saiki. Pure masterpiece indeed. Further cementing Saiki's reputation as a world class vocalist, as did this whole concert.

Kanami goes full Larry Carlton/Pat Metheny on this one. I can't begin to tell you how hard it is to play that bridge riff on an acoustic.

Always a pleasure to see you on YT. If you get time check out the entire acoustic concert - you'll get to see Band-Maid breaking down into a variety of smaller sub-units. Not so many bands can have the rhythm section do songs and sound as good as the full band. You'll get to see Akane and MISA doing the backing vocals for Miku. Not sure about the band being comfortable - they were all very nervous and didn't know where to look - they had the "staff" sat in front them watching every move.

Thanks Chase! Hope someone is able to gift you the ticket to the full concert where this performance came from. It was truly an amazing concert, and the cherry on top was the completely separately recorded “commentary” version where the ladies chat through the whole concert recording, sharing insights, background details and a whole lot of Band-Maid’s irreverent banter. Absolutely hilarious and informative at the same time.

Awesome takes, as usual! Kudos on pointing out specifics of the audio engineering -- not something that many people pay attention to. Also loved the shot to the purists (and there have been a few): "Music is music!". Thanks, Chase!

Great Reaction as always. Sayonakidori is another beautiful Song where Miku can show how much Work she put into becoming a better Singer. And it fits her perfectly as she is the Cutes of Maids 😄 I prefer the live version over the acoustic , but well that might just be me. Correction : Acoustic is amazing !

Good to see you back, I always appreciate your insights. There is a group of four reactors that kind of hang out together a bit and Potter is one of them. You might contact him because he's very, very into Band Maid. There's him, Ryan Mear who is and absolute Band Maid fanatic, The Champ of Medium and the guy who has Dicodec. I know any of them would be willing to talk music with you because they all play.

Chaaaase...welcome back, we missed you. I knew you would pause after the Solo. You should hear what Kanami and Saiki ( yes only this two ) did with "Different" and how they transformed it to an acoustic version. I was so impressed. Hope to see something from you soon again. Have a damned good day.

Welcome back Chase!!!! There is a tone of Band-Maid songs you have´n reacted to. Please check out "No God","Order" or "Brand New Road" All killers! If you watch the full "ONLINE ACOUSTIC 25/12" concert the biggest difference according to the band on recording this acoustic session was that MISA was sober!!!!😱😱😱😜😜

Chase, have you ever thought, what would have been if this were your introduction to Band-Maid? Compelling enough for a second look? And what if Onset had been your next experience. Just wondering. I wish every day could be the day I heard these fine musicians for the first time.
