I saw an interview with Britt where the interviewer called her a "dark soprano". Seems a perfect description: even on her highest notes, it's not "bright". Britt also said that writing was a great way to get to know your range and what works for you: you should write for your own voice/style. I think that's much of what contributes to her complete awesomeness.

IMMORTAL IS MORE THAN A NAME! "Abyss" Open my eyes in a daze How long has it been? Am I so out of place? Warmth I can no longer feel My mountain is gone, I'm surrounded by steel The strangest of structures arises ahead Seems to be held up by nothing Where have I gone, do I dream? How can the stars be all I can see? Dark embrace Has someone awakened me? Please show your face Cold and quiet space Out so far beyond stars and the sun Filling my heart up with wonder, unknown Now, to the edge of imagination Open my eyes to phenomenon, and hope Feverishly I explore Searching for someone, there has to be more I can't be the only one here My path always guides me, there's nothing to fear Then why do I feel so immensely alone This can't be the end of my story Onward I go once again Fighting my way to my final breath Into the abyss Out so far beyond stars and the sun Filling my heart up with wonder, unknown Now, to the edge of imagination Open my eyes to phenomenon, and hope Summon the strength of millenniums past Forged by the fire and flame I am the weapon of empires vast Immortal is more than a name Out so far beyond stars and the sun Filling my heart up with wonder, unknown Now, to the edge of imagination Open my eyes to phenomenon, and hope Cry into the chasm ahead Into the sky never ending, although Time will tell if I'm worthy of it A future of final transcending, alone

I love your analysis of Unleash The Archer tracks! I love their music, and I pick up on some of these things just by ear but without any of the knowledge, skill, or experience to really understand what I'm hearing beyond it being awesome. Listening to you point out and explain all the little details in these super-technical, super-intricate masterpieces gives me a whole new level of appreciation for UtA, and I am incredibly thankful to you for that. And in case you're not already annoyed by me asking on your other videos today, please react to The Wind That Shapes the Land soon! It looks like you haven't reacted to a UtA track for a little while, so it would be great if you pick them back up again and start with one of my 3 joint favourites: The Wind That Shapes the Land, Dreamcrusher (an older track), and Time Stands Still.

Great reaction again. It's also worth pointing our here that both Andrew and Grant are using 7 string guitars for this new album, so there's potential for some lower register guitar riffs to accompany the brighter power metal style. The guitar Andrew is using in this video is his handmade guitar from Vigilant guitars, really beautiful thing. You were right about the bassist, Nikko (the guy with the exceptional fingerwork in the Awakening video) left after the Apex tours and they then used a couple of stand-ins for shows in the interim. I think they're on the lookout for a new member at the moment.

This whole video appears to be filmed in the province Unleash the Archers (and I) come from. The shot where you commented how gorgeous it was (where they're driving on this road with all the trees and ocean) is on the largest north/south highway in the province. And the venue she's in at the beginning is the venue that most metal bands (unless they're pretty big) will play in when they come through Vancouver

Great video, REALLY appreciate your insight. Particularly that note about how the change in drum tempo creates an apparent speed change, I would never have noticed that. Regarding the bassist, Nikko (bassist from Awakenings) left slightly after Apex album release. I know he was already out by the time I saw their tour in mid-2018. Since they have a fairly regular touring bassist and have a studio bassist they've used, but the band doesn't want to rush adding a permanent bassist just to fill a gap since their chemistry is working so well right now. That's at least my understanding, they or someone in the know can correct me if I'm off. Cheers! Edit: One addendum I thought of after the fact, when you talked about voice layering. Have you done any Blind Guardian reactions? If not, you might want to give them a go. Hansi, the lead singer, does a lot of that voice layering and it reminds me a lot of UTA. Particularly try "The Bard's Song" (Slow but hauntingly beautiful ballad) or either "Battlefield" or "Sacred Worlds" (the full version of the latter with the orchestral opening, there's a shorter cut version for a video game release that's good but not NEARLY as deep and complex). You'll probably enjoy that layering.

Dude, I'm so glad that you jumped on this one so quickly, I actually saw it for the very first time in your video! (It's like we're reacting TOGETHER, aw. 🤣) what you absolutely HAVE to see is UTA's rendition of Northwest Passage. Absolutely killer song, but you'll love it, it's jumped way up to the top of my gardening playlist (alongside Nightwish if that tells you anything). Trust me, you won't regret it. Also, apparently Northwest Passage is a cultural song for Canadians, on par with being the best runner-up for the national anthem, if "O Canada" wasn't a thing. These guys covered it in glorious fashion. :D (I'd suggest that you check out the music video version, it's a bit of a trip to follow, but lots of good fun!)

Great reaction Chase!! Nice to hear your breakdown of the song, well done... You are correct in your comment about the song having a concept. The story actually begins with their previous album Apex (2017). Each song on that album is a chapter in the story... Abyss (August 2020) is the continuation of the story. Abyss (the song) is the second "Awakening" of the main character The Immortal... You need to check out the lyrics to follow the story... Well worth your time, believe me!!! Rock on Chase!!! Oh by the way, the bass player left the band in 2018. Third one to leave the band. In a new interview Brittney said they will remain a 4 piece band, and hire touring bassists...

Other great songs to check out by these guys: "General of the Dark Army" "Earth and Ashes" "The Matriarch" Thanks Chase for all you do! They have a hard time keeping a bassist. The bassist that was in the band for the previous album left the band. I believe they do have a new bassist or at least a session bassist. I'm not sure why he isn't in the video. Could be they filmed this a long time ago before the new bassist joined? Not sure, but yeah, they've had a hard time keeping a bassist, which is weird, considering that if I was a skilled bassist, I'd hop on the opportunity to be in this band.

For the record, one of their earlier albums (Demons of the Astrowaste, I think) had a decent amount of synths as well. They lean more into the "traditional" power metal sound when the subject of the music is more fantasy focused, and a more "modern" and synth-heavy sound in the songs that are meant to be about sci-fi. Though I will admit that the synths in that album aren't quite as in-your-face, iirc.

I think Brittany mentioned in a video that Jamie saw, that Apex was meant to feel more fantasy-based, and Abyss is meant to be more sci-fi themed, and the synth definitely carries that through. I think overall I liked this song more than Jamie did. I think Jamie felt this one felt a bit more forced in the acting and the long instrumental sections stretched out a bit much. I think it's just right. As per usual every band member stands out and gives a stellar performance, and they have a ton of fun doing it. As far as I know they are basically a 4-piece band now, but I thought one of the two guitar guys was playing bass. My bad. Didn't know until you pointed that out. Guess I can't tell the difference between a guitar and a bass. I think the guitar harmonies get me as well. That might be why I like this song more than Jamie does. - Ian

First off, dude you're the best. Absolutely love your reactions, your insight and knowledge is unparalelled, plus your taste is pretty darn great :D Please please please react to Northwest Passage by UTA, its a cover of an old Stan Rogers folk song considered the unofficial second Canadian national anthem. Brittney's vocals are stunning.

I know what you mean about personality in style. Years ago, when Godsmack released their album Faceless, I bought it first day, because I am a fan. I took it home, listened to it, and couldn't figure out why it sounded a little off to me. I eventually came to the conclusion that the drums were different, and found it that they had replaced their drummer for the album. Even on brand new songs from a band you know very well, the replacement of one member can change the sound.

You should get around to UTAs cover of "Northwest Passage" sometime. They do a great job with a Canadian folk classic (original by the legendary Stan Rogers), and the video is really neat too. I'm so stoked for the album release in August. I'm pretty new to UTA myself, little over a year maybe, but they quickly became a favourite.

Actually I spoke with him at the Vancouver show , He was seriously down about having to leave cause he just could not keep up with the financial cost of touring. He said they were the biggest band he had ever been in and is sad that he couldn't continue :( Feel.bad for the guy...it's hard enough to live in vancouver let alone save for regular tours around the world.

@@nemisisarcher8213 Thank you so much for this insight. I have always wondered. He is so talented and was such a good fit for this band in Apex. I get sad every time I hear the intro to Earth and Ashes, and think about how we won't hear stuff like that anymore in new music. It's a f'ing crime against humanity that these guys still have to work day jobs and can't support themselves with their music. I am hoping beyond hope that they are purposely leaving the spot open, in case this album finally gives them their big break and they can actually pay him and all of themselves to be in the band, instead of the other way around....
