I think if you listen to Helene Fischer you need to listen to Herzbeben or Atemlos. I think with Schlager it is that the most Germans say they hate it but when they go to a party 90% party to hard to Schlager. There is a clear line between Party-Schlager and Schlager. The songs are just really catchy, mostly simple text everyone can scream or sing the song along and it goes good with beer.

There are lots of people dissing Schlager music in Germany. But the truth is those singers are very very successful. The real venues for this type of music are not clubs however, but concerts and festivals like Oktoberfest. Maffay is not so much a Schlager singer anymore, if you want him singing Schlager, look for his early 70s stuff (like "Du"). For a contemporary male Schlager singler, look up Michael Wendler, a real classic (and very good IMO) Schlager singer was Udo Jürgens. Finally, Helene Fischer is a bit like Germany's Taylor Swift IMO: quite polarising. Her most successful song is probably "Atemlos durch die Nacht" from 2014 kzbin.info/www/bejne/npKodIdjiMqlfs0 - which is basically a pop number sung in German, written by another successful Schlager singer, Kristina Bach.
@imrehundertwasser70946 жыл бұрын
Here's one of Helene Fischer's early songs: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e5KuhXmJoN6Wfac - much more typical Schlager music than her later pop numbers.
@MrTobiization6 жыл бұрын
Imre Hundertwasser I wouldn’t say that Schlager are super successful in Germany. You‘ll find them in the Top of German Charts and German Album Charts as the German Charts are measured by money turnaround. Those Schlager-Singers are making by far more money than a pop singer with young listeners using Spotify...
@imrehundertwasser70946 жыл бұрын
So topping the charts is not successful enough by your definition?
@MrTobiization6 жыл бұрын
Imre Hundertwasser Not super successful! There are songs which are way more successful - but the do not generate that much money as their listeners don’t buy expensive boxes and albums. Thoses Boxes are the reason which makes you find a lot of rapers in the charts, too. Those boxes are just made to generate a turnover > top the charts!

If you listen a Peter Maffay song than you should listen to his most popular ones. "Es war Sommer" where he sings about his "first time" as a teenager with a women double as old as him. Another popular song is "Nessaja". It is from his musical Tabaluga that he did for kids. This is a very good and deep song. Peter Maffay was never a typical Schlager singer. If you want to listen to real cheesy and typical Schlager that were played on TV for the older people, listen to Nana Mouskouri (she is Greek but did many songs in German), Ronny (Wolfgang Roloff) and the German songs from Roger Whittaker. This was real cruel for me as a kid when the grandparents and grand aunties insistent on playing Ronny. Udo Lindenberg did a song about people who secretly listen to Schlager but don't admit it. It is called "Nana M.", the M stands for Mouskouri. I don't think that you can compare Schlager with country music. Actually, I like country music like from Johnny Cash or Willie Nelson. But I can't stand this Ronny and Whittaker stuff.

I'm 58 now. Schlager has been and still is traumatic to me. Still I was curious about your opinion. Here is my point of view: I agree that country music should rather be compared to Volksmusik. But I'm not really familiar with the country vs western definition. So Schlager is still close, I believe. Maffay was Schlager and today is "something different", for sure. I agree with your comparison of Shania Twain to Andrea Berg. And I would add Helene Fischer into that same equotion. If both are "Schlager", then their influence took Schlager to another, more modern level. And I heard people say the same about Shania Twain. On the US side of things I think of Alison Krauss, modernizing country music. I don't know how many people in the US hate her. Dissing Helene Fischer, over here: I think it's only for her huge success. German's have issues with others, beeing successful. Typical "old school Schlager" is rather the below mentioned Wendler. I think many also define this kinda stuff as "Ballermann-Mukke". Nothing to do with guns. It refers to that beach on the spanish island Mallorca. Some are joking about Mallorca, beeing the 18th state of germany. I do listen to few german music. My last buy was Alina: "Die einzige". Great song. Fantastic voice. Some call her "the german Adele". That is a VERY high level! But worth listening to her when it comes to german popular music. Not very much in focus anymore: Anne Haigis. One of the best german female voices, ever. Try maybe "sexual healing" to find out about her voice, then go on to songs sung in german. And one of old in Rock from germany: Jule Neigel and her song: "Die Seele brennt". Simply beautiful! But I'm loosing my way. Schlager makes me shiver. One last funny note: there have been many singers from other countries who became extremely successful here, singing Schlager. If you wanna dig deeper into it, go look for Demis Roussos from greece, Mirelle Mathieu from france, Roger Whitthaker and also Eireen Sheer from the UK, just to name a few. Have fun to look up some of those!

Er singt crossover Pop/Oper. Viele Lieder in verschiedenen Sprachen. Alles live. everything got a little mixed up here...schlager is not to be compared with country music or folk. And then again not everything german language is schlager... Peter Maffay is probably more pop/rock and Andrea Berg and Helene Fischer are modern schlager, check Atemlos by Helene Fischer, the biggest recent schlager tune. Then we do have schlager kult songs as part of our musical history from the 60's and 70's, which is very different from todays schlager music. Then we did have NDW, Neue Deutsche Welle in the early 80's breaking with traditional schlager and mix it up with more modern sounds. Over the last 20 years it became much more common to do german language pop rock hiphop etc... schlager still keeps a profil on it's own with only a few songs crossing over. Schlager, at least from my point of view, these days is a little bit stuck with more or less a very similiar rhythms tempo and beat. That used to be very different in the 60's and 70's and with NDW. But there you go. German country music or better Volksmusik again is a very different genre that features local regional traditional music, sometimes or often in dialect with traditional instruments and costumes. Most famous from Bavaria and Austria. This indeed is something usually only elder people get into. Schlager is not necessarily generation binded.

Anyway a part of the time I was reminded to Angus Young from AC/DC because your position in the video made you something like horns to your head, coming from the wall behind you :-) Seems like you are on the "Highway to Hell" :-) Regarding Schlager I think you picked some popular music examples but Schlager includes so much more. This is the reason why everybody can find something to love it or to hate it :-)

just a little tip - when you talk the whole time you can't listen to the music ;-)
@j7ndominica0516 ай бұрын
Tunes are out of pop music. We have experienced the una1ivng of melody. How do you "multitask" talking while listening, lol. The oldest writing credit for Maffay in my collection is 1979. He is prehistoric. Achterbahn, lol? Listen to "Ich will mehr" by Wolfgang Petry. Too bad the bass has been squeezed out of it by the Loudness War. And "Nur ein kleines Stuck Papier". I don't know any new crap at all. "Das goldene Schlager-Archiv: Die Hits des Jahres" is a good compilation series for 50s through 80s. There isn't much similarity to Country, and wasn't in the past years. No story, simple lyrics. It is pop music. Some of it has traditional influences like jodeling and such.

schlager lyrics are always primitive and predictable like "i met you at the bar and fell in love with your blue eyes and then you melted my heart" yadda yadda, nationalistic undertones are common too, like how pretty the landscape is in bavaria etc. :D peter maffay is not schlager at all; and unfortunately a lot of people like helene fischer & andrea berg, mostly lower class/lower middle class people id say.
@imrehundertwasser70946 жыл бұрын
Calling a landscape pretty is a "nationalistic undertone" to you? Oh well ... Peter Maffay _did_ start by singing Schlager, though that was in the early 1970s.

Schlager is not that bad at all listen too Bosse ;) kzbin.info/www/bejne/rnawiJhtpq10eas And not all eng. Musik ist top of the pop. So blaming on Schlager ist .... not needed. Most Schlager ist been produced in the same way "Foxtrott" rhythm and nearly the same "Text". Thats why most people do not really like it. BUT even if it is bee running they can sing it by them self ;)

@@imrehundertwasser7094 Like him or not Heino is a survivor. Did you know he actually was performing in public before Elvis. He is still going well into his 80s. And he has sold in excess of 50 million records. Most singers would give their right arms for juste fraction of that kind of "controversy"
