A different kind of Christmas song but I still loved it. Link to original video • How to Make Gravy All content in this video is for entertainment purposes only. I do not claim the music or lyrics as my own.

Great choice. Paul Kelly is a genius storyteller and songwriter. You won't find a dud song in his catalogue, and he's a wonderfully generous human being, justly loved in Aus.

Hi Erin Ty for reacting to our legend Paul Kelly, a few facts about "How To Make Gravy" for you, Paul was asked to contribute to a charity album for the Salvation Army, the songs he wanted to do were already picked by other artists so he suggested "What about if I write a song for the album?" so he did and a few weeks later one of the producers came over to Pauls to hear the song and Paul told him well it is done but it is different, it's a guy in jail writing to his brother just before Christmas. Paul played it for him on the guitar when finished Paul looked up to see the man in tears. Paul asked the producer " Do you think they will accept it considering it's story?" the producer said leave it too me and It went on the album and history was made. It has taken on it's own it's own life here in Australia and Paul plays it nearly every performance he does or until COVID hit did.

Thanks for checking this one out, Erin. If you like the pictures he paints with words I’d recommend his song Deeper Water. It’s one song that brings tears to my eyes when I hear it. Simple music, but a great story.

Songs come and go. This song has had a huge afterlife. It has the power to move people. It is now a Christmas classic. In Australia Covid led to hard lock downs in which people were not able to move from place to place. Kelly re-released it when Covid restrictions were eased Christmas 2021 The song had pictures of people re-uniting with family after two years isolation. . People were bursting into tears all over Australia as they viewed it

Thanks Erin great reaction. And thanks for taking the time to read the lyrics at the end, I've heard this song many times but with most songs you don't always know all the words. Now I love this song even more.

Paul Kelly is a fantastic songwriter, Storyteller. He was asked to sing a song for a Christmas album but the song he wanted to do was taken so he took the idea of a story that the guy couldn't be home for Christmas with his family. So he wrote the song as he is in prison. 21 of December is know as making grave day in Australia.

Great song and a big hit here in Australia. It’s a letter written from prison to his family for Christmas. It was his job to make the gravy every year…but not that year. Look up the 2021 version that was put together for all the people in lockdown around the world

You got it in one. Kelly backed for Dylan. He gifted him a book about the Kelly Gang. He was nervous that Bob was not receptive. I believe Bob thanked him for the gift and commented that no other support act had thought to do that before.

Thank you for putting Paul Kelly up there with Springsteen and Dylan, because he is at that level.

You could definitely interpret it as a phone call nowadays, but when it was written, it was a letter from a convict to his family from prison the last few days before Christmas. The subtle link most made to the prison is "If I get good behaviour, I'll be out of here by July..." A true storyteller, because, while the original is around a convict missing his family, it can certainly ring true now to any of us who are away from family and loved ones for a long period of time, especially during the holiday season.

If you would like to hear it again, try the 2021 clip they did for the lockdown, it's very special 🥰

You were spot on with the comparison to Bob Dylan. Paul Kelly has a massive back catalogue. kzbin.info/aero/PLGXJp7R0gUjiXDJc2vSUboteWZ9U1btl6

It’s 2am why are you still up? Or do you work night shift?

I think the more important question is, what are YOU doing still up at 2 AM? It’s only midnight where I live 😉 . I got off an evening shift at 10:30 and am headed to bed now but I wanted to post my final song for the day. 😊
