Basically a remake of Ritchie Valens song "Ooh My Head." Since Valens was dead, his mom was given a composer credit so she would get some royalties. That's why "Mrs. Valens" is listed on the album.

It should also be mentioned that Ian Steward was the close friend and pianist for The Rolling Stones in the early days. In fact he co-founded the band.

Stu was Ian Stewart, who played piano on "Rock and Roll". As we all know, Rock and Roll was recorded as a jam session while Bonzo was trying to figure out Four Sticks. I imagine that at some time during that session, while on a break, Bonzo was laying down this simple beat when the rest of the band jumped in and started playing with Stu on piano. (Yes, the piano was out of tune). Tapes were rolling, and here we are. When they were done, Bonzo just kept on going with his simple beat.

"Boogie With Stu" and "Black Country Woman" plays as one track for me.....one cannot be separated from the other. That's how I've been hearing it since 1975 and that will NEVER CHANGE. "Physical Graffiti" is arguably the greatest rock album of all-time and CERTAINLY the greatest of the 1970s.

The "Stu" is Ian Stewart who plays the boogie woogie piano on this and, if you recall, also plays the piano on Rock And Roll. This song was inspired by the Ritchie Valens song "Ooh My Head", which, itself was a take on Little Richard's song "Ooh! My Soul". Robert even sings "Ooh, my head" in the song. Ritchie Valens' mom was given partial credit because this was basically a cover of Valens' version. Ritchie Valens died in a plane crash in 1959 along with Buddy Holly and Jiles Perry Richardson Jr., also known as "The Big Bopper" (extra trivia, the loss of these three musicians would inspire Don McLean's song "American Pie" and is referenced as "the day the music died"). As mentioned, this came out of a jam session back in the days of recording the 4th album and Robert gave it a working title of "sloppy drunk"; in addition, this song also has the rarity of Robert playing guitar while Jimmy plays mandolin. I love this song, it's a jolly little bit of fun.

Hello Henrie, it’s Ron. I’m so glad I caught this background you’ve shared. (I remain amazed) Two points you could shed light on please. 1) Is that actually Robert on guitar on this recording? 2) I know very little about Ian Stewart, except that he was a highly regarded artist among his contemporaries. Was he a touring musician or a studio pro? Thank, as always, for adding to our body of knowledge. Regards

It’s a mandolin. This is in a genre known as “boogie-woogie”. To me, very close to rock-a-billy. This was American rock and roll from the late fifties into the early sixties snd was part of the sounds all these guys grew up with. So this is a fun throwback to fifties rock. Youve got Ian Stuart playing honky-tonk piano on it…Hence the title “Boogie with Stu”. This was the guys just having fun with a pal in the studio. Robert LOVED this style snd could sing it ‘till the cows came home if you encouraged him 😁 Factoid: the first venture back into music for Plant after he lost Bonzo and Zep died, was to form a group in 1981 called The Honeydrippers. They played small pubs and such in The Midlands. They never let out that Robert was in the band. He wanted to fly under the radar…play small places…see if he still wanted to stay in music. And what they played was 50’s rock and roll in this style. Robert loves this genre and has hundreds, if not thousands of singles in his massive collection. He’s been a guest DJ on BBC radio recently, spinning some of his favorite oldies.

Further proof that there is practically every music style on this album!! This is a purely fun track. I'm sure there are some that would pass this off as filler, but for me, this sounds like a band, so comfortable with each other, just jamming with a friend (Ian Stewart on piano) and this boogie-woogie number just pops out - and it's awesome! I can just imagine the smile on Bonzo's face laying down the beat on this, Jones going mad on the mandolin.

This is simply a remake of "Ooh, My Head" by Ritchie Valens, but it is really, really cool. And as mentioned here previously, "Stu" is Ian Stewart, a pianist who was one of the founding members of The Roling Stones and was playing piano on this track.

Physical Graffiti, to me, is Led Zeppelin's equivalent of The Beatles' White Album. It's a big, beautiful mess. It rambles. I meanders. It's sometimes brilliance captured on accident. I love listening to it in its entirety because it jumps from one genre to the next: country, rock, world, boogie... This is what I imagine they were playing because it made them happy. Makes me happy too.

I've always moved and grooved to this fun tune! Yeah, it's a "boppy" side to them , if you will. The older "oldies" music that Plant , especially, loved. That piano banging that Stewart lays down is the STANK! I wish I knew what Bonham was playing/hitting to get that odd/unique "drum" sound. Thanks for the chance to "Boogie With Sal"!
