Strider was the dog's name the song is about. Also Led Zeppelin almost from the beginning were selling out venues quickly and for multiple nights at a time. For the 2007 reunion show at the O2 in London tickets sold out almost immediately since over 20,000,000 (that's twenty MILLION) people tried to get them as soon as they went on sale.

In the US, Led Zeppelin was popular immediately after the release of their first album! You have to understand that in those days, concert tickets were sold at record stores, and primarily publicized by word of mouth, radio stations, and posters at local music venues and on college campuses. No Internet or national ticket vendors! LZ concerts sold out VERY quickly. I was lucky enough to see them perform five times during the 1970s -- some of the best memories of my youth! They played 3-1/2 hours or more at these concerts...Just imagine nearly four hours of intense, high-energy rock and roll, usually accompanied by some sort of herbal and/or chemical enhancement amongst thousands of your peers! Ah, it was a wonderful time to be young!

When I saw them in MSG in 1973 they sold out in an hour and my seats cost something like $12.50 that said when they reunited for a one time gig in 2007 for the Celebration Day concert (with Bonhams son on drums since John had died) there were 20 million requests for tickets in the first 20 minutes!

The Heart cover of Stairway was so good that you can see Robert Plant tearing up. He also wasn't expecting to see his godson Jason Bonham on his dad's drums because apparently he'd asked Jason to accompany them and he said he couldn't make it. It's an epic moment

To the dismay of their British colleagues , LZ were an instant smash from day 1. They went right to America and boom!!!. Most bands need time to get a following. They were big from 1969 thru 1980. I mean possibly the biggest band in the world every year. Some British musicians held some contempt for Bonzo and Plant because they kinda walked into this great opportunity being selected by Page.

Zeppelin were huge pretty much from the get go. Their debut album went top 10 all around the World, including in the UK and the US. All their subsequent studio albums went to number 1 in both the UK and the US, as well as numerous other countries worldwide. The only exception was Led Zeppelin IV, which 'only' reached number 2 in the States. I doubt they were that upset though, as it stayed in the chart for years, becoming their biggest selling album in the US and one of the biggest selling albums of all-time, worldwide! Their live double album, 'The Song Remains The Same' also went to number 1 all over the World, including in the UK and reached number 2 in the US. I think they got a bit of a jump start from the industry, as Jimmy had been THE go to session guitarist in London, for quite a while. It also helped their initial public profile that Jimmy was already known from his time with The Yardbirds, who had also featured Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck! Yep, Zeppelin were huge from the outset and were the biggest music act in the World for the entirety of the 70s, until Bonham's untimely death. They were arguably the biggest act from 1969 but as the Beatles were still active in that year, it's a hard sell. :)

Hi Sal…Helene here. Ok…you had several questions. Strider was Robert’s dog, named after a main character in Tolkien. As you already know, Robert was a big fan of that author. . Second; Jimmy was already known from having been in The yardbirds, so that helped them to get the great contract with Atlantic records. BUT, they toured massively in 1969….four US tours alone. They started out supporting Vanilla Fudge, or Iron Butterfly, but after just a couple of months, no other band wanted to play with them….the audience loved them too much, so they were soon doing this own shows. They started in clubs, moved quickly to theaters, and were in arenas within the year. Royal Albert Hall was a hugely prestigious venue in London, and they played that in January of 1970. By 1970/71 it was stadiums. It was a pretty wild ride, as all the members of Zeppelin would attest. They expected success because they knew they were good, but NOBODY expects a ride to the top that fast! In 2007 for their one-off reunion, there were 20 million requests for the 18,000 seat arena. That’s a record. They had to hold a lottery. . As for the Heart cover: You are going to get many people who want you to watch it. It was in 2012, and Zeppelin were among the people being honored. It is fabulous. But before you do, you should read up a bit on two things; The Kennedy Center Honors series and what is it and what does it mean to an artist to be selected. Just so you know what your watching. And two, you should at the very least read the Wikipedia entry on Heart to know the band, how huge they were were in the late seventies, what their relationship was to Zeppelin. You might wish to even watch a couple of videos of Heart (not to react to, just to get background) in their prime, just so you know who you’re watching. You can go in cold of course, most reactors do…they haven’t a clue about Heart or Kennedy Honors and some haven’t even watched Zeppelin yet! Or know who Jason Bonham is and his close relationship to the band. The performance can stand on its own. . But you’re giving Zeppelin the full treatment, not just being casual about it, and you deserve to know more of the meaning of what you will be watching. It will make it more impactful to you. Just my opinion. But if you go in cold, you’re going have ALLOT of questions…..

Heart was very popular in the 70’s and 80’s. Zeppelin is their heroes and Jason Bonham plays the drums using his dads drum kit. The Heart tribute is one of the best tributes you will ever see. Heart were HUGE fans of Zeppelin and are often doing cover versions of their songs at their concerts. They are often considered the best female led Rock band ever. The two women are sisters. The blond Nancy Wilson, plays mostly acoustic and she is considered one of the best female guitar players. The Singer Ann Wilson, is one of the best female singers in rock. They have several really big hits from the 70's. Then around 1980 or so they fell off the scene for a few years but came back even bigger than before. For a 4-5 year stretch in the 80's, they were one of the biggest rock acts around. Their 80's sound was more main stream and power ballads. I suggest the song "Alone" from this period just to hear Ann's voice. But they have many songs from the 80's to choose from that you will love. 70's Heart was more raw and rocking and folk. "Magic Man, Barracuda, Crazy on You" are some suggestions from this period. Down the road, you might seriously consider covering some of their many hits as well. Trust me, you won't be disappointed. Jason Bonham, the son of John Bonham plays drums on this cover. It was part of a all night celebration for Led Zeppelin. With other famous bands performing other songs by them as well. Actually, the Foo Fighters are one of the groups performing. I bring that up because their drummer just OD'ed last week. So yeah, you really should react to that version of Stairway. Also remember the two ladies are in their 50's when they did this.

The reference to Strider is about a dog that Plant owned. I don't know if at this point Strider was still alive or not. Heart (a band that was active from the mid '70's on) did an awesome cover of "Stairway" with the surviving members of LZ in the audience at the Kennedy Center at the beginning of the Obama administration. Jason Bonham sat in on drums and it is definitely worth your time. For most of their career Zeppelin tickets sold out as quickly as the ticket agencies could process them. Since they started out as "The New Yardbirds", and Page had played with the original "Yardbirds" for some months before their breakup, Zeppelin had a foot up. It was somewhat dismaying to Zep that initially they were not well received in the U.K. They started out in the U.S. playing the larger rock clubs like The Boston Tea Party, the Fillmore etc., colleges, fairs and some amusement parks, but that only lasted a short time. American audiences were mad for Zep's power and energy. By 1970 they were playing stadiums.

Beautiful to behold and to be heard, sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson created some of the best rock songs ever. "Baracuda," "Love Alive," Magic Man," "Heartless," Bebe LeStrange, and others. As others here have noted, they loved Zeppelin above all other bands, and it showed in their own compositions and excellent covers of Zep tunes in concert. And yes, Strider was Robert Plant's dog, named after a nickname of Aragorn, from Lorf of the Rings. A guy at work recently told me he named his son Strider for the same reason, lol!

I can't tell you how fast they would sell out but for the reunion concert in 2007 there were 20 million ticket requests. Zep wasn't completely unknown at the start. Page was a very popular and sought after studio guitar player known as "Little Jimmy." and also was in a group called the Yardbirds before Zeppelin. At one time the Yardbirds had Eric Clapton then Jeff Beck in the group. Two legendary guitar players. Page joined them late because from what I read Clapton was long gone and formed Cream. And Beck was sort of sickly and kept missing gigs. When the Yardbirds disbanded it left Page as basically the only member left. So, he decided to form a new group that was being called "The New Yardbirds" So it wasn't like Page's new group was starting from scratch fame wise. He knew John Paul Jones from the studio sessions he did. He heard about Plant singing in local clubs as a 19 year old and loved his voice. Plant had a buddy that played drums and that was the 18 year old John Bonham. Bonham had already been asked to join a few other semi famous groups but after talking to Page, Bonham just liked Page's music ideas better. Once they started practicing. Keith Moon, the drummer from the Who heard about Page's new group and what they wanted to play and famously said, Thats going to go over like a "Lead Zeppelin." A Zeppelin is an early form of todays blimps. So saying Lead Zeppelin, was Moon saying that it was a very bad idea. The Who were a REALLY BIG group at this point. Just below the Beatles and about equal to the Rolling Stones. So it was something in itself that a member of The Who even knew who Jimmy Page was. But he should have because Page played lead guitar on a few Who Albums because basically Pete Townsend couldn't play the riffs. Page heard this comment and took the "A" out of Lead so us stupid Americans wouldn't mispronounce the name. At first not too popular but they seemed to have took off pretty quickly. They released their first two albums in 1969 in the same year so after the second album they started to be famous. And then they released two more albums in the next two years. Once the 4th album with Stairway released in 1971, they were monsters'. I know they broke almost all of the Beatles attendance records.

Zeppelin happened literally overnight, in the U.S. So, within a 3-month period they did their first tour of the States, went back to the UK to record album two, then one month later back on the road in the states to sell-out crowds everywhere, and never performed in front of anything less than a sell-out crowd again after the debut of the first album and the end of that first 3-month tour.

They sold out pretty much instantly. Tickets for 1977 tour in D.C. 3 shows sold out in one and half hours. They added another night, sold out in about 30 minutes. We had to get obstructed view seats because of that.

Zeppelin tickets were near impossible to get. I never saw them live. I think right after Whole Lotta Love they playing the big arenas. Before that you could see them at the Tea Party or the Filmore, smaller venues but that was less available tickets too.

I think the tribute would be good idea to watch. I also think that whwn you start Houses of the holy, you should consider watching the two first songs at the same time live at msg.

It's weird seeing Jimmy sing little bits of background vocals. Super rare live. He did some on the first 2 or 3 albums, but they were rare. As far as how fast did they sell out? They went from the east to west coast of the U.S. By midwest they were selling out every night. By California they were huge. Strider was Robert's dog.

This whole song is about Plant's dog Stryder - a Blue-eyed Merle.

brother, they sold every single show world wide right from jump...and in hours of people standing in line. when they would come to LA they would sell out 4 nights of a 58 thousand seat arena in a single day then add a fifth night sell out

Tickets for their shows would sell out in a matter of hours. People would camp out overnight to be there when the box office opened.

In the early 70s, I don't know how fast they sold out cuz we always jumped the wall at the end of the old Tampa Stadium and disappeared into the crowd of 60,000 or so standing around on the field. Who could afford concert tickets at 16? We had weed to buy.
