What I love most about live performances back in the day was that they were often performed in the moment. Even if the artist slipped up, it was the imperfections that often made it perfect for the people enjoying it. I once watched Ella forget the words to Mack the Knife. What did she do? Well she just scatted her way thru it like it was what she always did. Perfect

After Chick Webb died in 1939, Ella took over the band and ran it until she left for solo stardom.

The most perfect voice God created. My favorite singer.

Glorious! The woman was a master of her craft. Her Songbooks-an 8 album collection of her interpreting a different composer's songs on each (Cole Porter, Rogers & Hart, Duke Ellington, Irving Berlin, the Gershwin brothers, Harold Arlen, Jerome Kern and Johnny Mercer) are essentials. They contain so many treasures but my personal favorite is her version of Harold Arlen's "This Time the Dream's On Me".

She isn't called "The First Lady of Song" for nothing. Oscar Peterson often accompanied her on the piano, so he may very well be playing on this recording.

A love of Ella was the reason I clicked in. Amazing how two people with very little talent can survive. Anybody with half a brain and decent hearing would realise Ella had an excpetionally beautiful voice. If you want an intelligent vocal analysis of Ella, or any other singer for that matter, Fil Wings of Pegasus is excellent. He has a good knowledge of vocal technique, his critique of a performance interesting, informative, a musician who really understands what he is listening to.

There was only one artist Frank Sinatra ever got nervous performing with, Ella. He knew she was the GREATEST voice and performer (in his expert opinion). No argument EVER.

Frank also paid high tribute to Billie Holiday; he called her his greatest influence.
