Winter War, 105 days of Honor. One Soviet general, looking at a map of the territory Russia had acquired on the Karelian Isthmus, is said to have remarked: "We have won just about enough ground to bury our dead” We have a saying that one finnish soldier equals 10 russians and that was pretty often the case in winter war. Soviets outnumbered us with everything, yet we still managed to stop them. They had 3000 tanks, we had 32. They had 3800 airplanes, we had 114. They had unlimited reserves of men, we had around 340 000. We lost 25 904 KIA, they lost around 127 000 to 200 000 KIA. We had 43 500 wounded, they had around 200 000, some say even high as 600 000. According to Nikita Khrushchev, 1.5 million men were sent to Finland and one million of them were killed, while 1,000 aircraft, 2,300 tanks and armored cars and an enormous amount of other war materials were lost. Motti tactics were one of the key elements of defeating soviet units and mechanised infantry. Finland is full of forests and lakes, making it pretty much impossible to move anywhere else but the roads. This made the motti tactics ideal. Cutting those columns on the road in to small sections, surrounding them and destroying them with small finnish forces. Soviets thought that the invasion would be over in few days. They were not prepared at all for -40 celcius degrees and pure finnish brutality and sisu. Talking about sisu, it does not have a straight translation, but roughly it means willpower and courage to go through anything or any kind of situation. We had to sign the Moscow Peace Treaty on 13 March 1940, as we had approximately 2 weeks worth of supplies left. In the end, the territory lost were cession of the Gulf of Finland islands, Karelian Isthmus, Ladoga Karelia, Salla, Rybachy Peninsula and lease of Hanko to the Soviet Union. Unfortunately, Continuation War followed in 25 June 1941 and lasted till 19 September 1944. After that we had to kick the Germans out from Lapland in 19 September 1944 - 27 April 1945. As a finnish man, this song is really special for me 🇫🇮

Don't forget that Stalin pretended to need some buffer zone against Germany.... What a lie, because Stalin and Hitler was best of friends, because of their Molotov /Ribbentrop Pact that ment that they was to split Europe between eachother. Soviet Union and Nazi Germany is both as much to blame for the outbreak of ww2. Nazis and Soviet Bolshevik bastards attacked Poland TOGETHER!! Nobody talks about the fact that Soviets attacked from the East 2 week later and split Poland in two spheres of interest. Eastern Poland was Soviets and western was their Allied the Nazis... So they where the best of friends all along the winter war. Nazis sent a lot of military aid to Soviet Unions and that was something they did until June 22:d 1941.....but pretending that it's only Nazis to blame, suits the western alliance. They chose to be best of friends with Soviet union already in May 11:th 1941 when they signed that "Lend and Lease act" with Soviet Union... This was also during the same time when Hitler sent Soviet union military aid... So Hitler wasn't exactly happy about the fact that Stalin tricked him.... This is also something we must pretend that it have never happen... Politics on high level

"With Molotov Cocktail in hand, no fear of their tanks, Death or Glory" That line is always the thing about this song that stands out to me when i think. It may have been the Spaniards that were the first known users of petroleum bombs, but man did the fins give it a memorable 'affectionate" nickname.

"With Molotov cocktail in hand" During the war, the Soviet Air Force dropped incendiary cluster bombs on Helsinki and other Finnish cities. In 1939, the Soviet Foreign Minister, Vyacheslav Molotov, claimed the Soviet Union was not dropping bombs on Finland, but merely airlifting food to starving Finns. The Finns sarcastically dubbed the RRAB-3 cluster bomb "Molotov's bread basket." Consequently, the improvised incendiary device that Finns used to counter Soviet tanks was named the "Molotov cocktail", "a drink to go with the food."

Finland has one of the greatest war history.. we fought with vikings and we were partially part of varangian guard protecting easter rome.. we fought in so many wars as mercenaries.. there's a reason why even William the Conqueror was proud of his Finnish heritage(he didn't actually have any).. and after we were subjucated we were main infantry of Swedish army.. and all of that is the reason why Russia originally thought, there is no point of integrating Finnish, hence we were Grand Duchy of Finland.. then we got a taste.. since Swedish united us.. Russia enslaved us (look up "isoviha", 1/4 of Finnish were killed and enslaved).. after those we got the chance to be independend.. and now everyone is suprise "Finnish can actually fight" Today, we still have the largest artillery force in the europe, every man goes to service and in army you are trained to fight without supplies.. Fuck it, we would of done better than ukraine with one tenth of the men.. Absolutely no chance of 30 km(~20 mile) long convoy in our borders, we'd bomb that shit from 50 km apart

Greetings from Finland! Thank you for reacting to Talvisota/Winter War. The war was like David vs Goliath x 100. There are two other songs related to this: one about The White Death, Simo Häyhä and the other about Soldier in Three Armies, Lauri Törni. I think you’ve reacted to the second one. Looking forward to the reaction to the first one (if you haven’t already) and to more Sabaton!

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.” ― Sun Tzu, The Art of War ;)

Quick thing about "The nature of warfare" The Art of War album has a bunch of little complimentary tracks that link to other songs, The nature of warfare links to Cliffs of Gallipoli, these little snippets often have a slow build of music wisdom/quotes from The art of war of similar such places, then it leads straight into the song (Think of the "Diary of the unknown soldier" and how it pairs with "The lost Battalion" from The Last Stand)
@sirroderic4794

Hey Dave, just a heads-up Nature of warfare is like a 30 second piece with some lore and background music, and it serves more like a transition and "a secret" is just a bonus 30 Second piece with a surprise at the end So if you must react to those, you may as well react to them both in one video Anyways great reactions

If I remember correctly, you reacted to soldier of 3 armies. Well Laurï Tornï was fighting in this war first. Then if you haven't, I would suggest you to react to White death. It's about the greatest sniper ever, Simo hayha who also fought in this war. Finland really birthed kickass soldiers in this war against USSR

Hi Dave, I understand you, Sabaton is one of my favorite bands. There was a time when I didn't hear anything else, I think for over a year. As soon as I played something else, I had to go straight back to Sabaton. Now I'm listening to other music again, especially Apocalyptica. Their performance together with Sabaton (one of my last concerts before the pandemic) was the best thing I've seen in a long time. There's something about Sabaton - I can't really put it - that just makes them stand out and draws me in.
