My partner and I took his 80 year old mother to see Dame Edna and I managed front row seats Sir Les said something and my mother-in-law didnt laugh. Sir Les said, ooh, there’s a woman here I think I’ve offended. She’s got a face on her like a dropped pie. You know when you hear a comment and think I shouldn’t laugh………my bad. Fortunately, later in the show Dame Edna rescued the day, got her up on stage, she got a box of chocolates , a photo with Dame Edna and a bunch of Gladdis. My mother in-law died last week, she still had the photo of her with Dame Edna up on her wall .

I met Barry in my back yard, he was doing a movie in a back street of Redfern and the production company hired my backyard and bathroom, the backyard was to set up the meals for the cast and crew. At the time I failed to recognise that he was in fact, Dame Edna and Sir Les, we were talking as he admired my brand new black Dahatsu Charade with little mag wheels. He was so down to earth. I had the great honour of unexpectantly becoming part of one of his shows. It was the early 1980s on a cold wintery Saturday night, and he (Sir Les), Dame Edna, and Sandy Stone had a show at the Palais Theatre in St Kilda, Melbourne. I was with my girlfriend, and we arrived a few minutes late, the show had already started. Sir Les was onstage, spit shooting out everywhere from his mouth over the audience. The usher held us at the back of the theatre, which was entirely normal, I didn't expect to be let in until there was an appropriate break. However, after a couple of minutes, Sir Les looked to the usher and made a very subtle nod. And as soon as that happened, the usher started taking us to our seats. I did think it a little strange at the time but thought no more until we got halfway down the aisle, and Sir Les Shouted out to me "What's your name?" I shouted back Richard. He then asked me what my girlfriend's name was, and I replied Judith. Les then extolled, "Don't worry Richard and Judith, you haven't missed anything, I've been waiting for you. I saw your car in the carpark. It was the one bouncing around with the steamed-up windows, wasn't it?". The usher then proceeded to take us to our seats, but not directly, he wove us back and forth through several rows, with Sir Les providing a running commentary the whole time "Don't worry Richard, just fart in their faces!" By the time we finally got to our seats he knew what suburb I lived in, where I grew up, what I did for a job, etc. It took around 10 minutes to finally get to our seats, and I realized what an incredible talent Barry Humphries was. It was 10 minutes of total adlib, he had no idea what my replies were going to be, and he was hilarious! Many live performers who do that sort of stuff use a "plant", an actor pretending to be a theatergoer. But not Barry, this was real. And throughout the show he kept bringing me back into the conversation, remembering my name, saying things like "Isn't that right Richard?". That night he also picked on others in the audience and remembered their names throughout the show too. I actually felt really sad when I heard the news Barry had passed a few days ago. I felt like I have lost 3 friends, Barry, Sir Les, and Dame Edna (I never really warmed to Sandy Stone that much). I played the theme song from his first movie, The Adventures Of Barry McKenzie, over and over, and it made me cry, as the childhood memories flooded back to when I saw the movie at the drive-in when I was 12 or 13 years old with my 8-year-old cousin. I think it was R rated, not sure how my uncle got us in!

thank goodness you can see through P.C. I went to see him 40 years ago - yes this character is supposed to be the embodiment of ignorance and small mindedness and lack of Australian culture. I feel very sad at his passing. He was my favourite comedian. Parkinson is his best interviewer IMO.

Met Barry as he was very good friends of a mutual friend. Saw him in Australia and London. I recall him having a back and forth dialogue with me in my friends kitchen it was very funny. I wish I could remember it word for word. Had Sir Les spit on me at The Regal as I was late (by design I think due to my father who was in on it) and Les spat on us as we arrived in front row seats.

The Melbourne people rejected him with they're politically correct let's make more rules attitudes . He may have started out representing Melbourne but he finished representing Australia

@@James-kv6kb Melbourne Comedy Festival talk about humour constipation. If you dont drop the F bomb every second word apparently you're not funny.

@@voxac30withstrat Been a magician fire breather and all that sort of thing for 30 years I had a lot of comedy in the show but never dropped the f-word lol half the fun of making people laugh is them knowing what you're talking about ,without you actually using the offensive language
