The Angels - Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again, Live In Melbourne 1979
• Video
Lyrics
Went down to Santa Fe, where Renoir paints the walls
Described you clearly, but the sky began to fall
Am I ever gonna see your face again
Am I ever gonna see your face again
Trams, cars and taxis, like a waxworks on the move
Carry young girls past me, but none of them are you
Am I ever gonna see your face again
Am I ever gonna see your face again
Without you near me, I got no place to go
Wait at the bar, maybe you might show
Am I ever gonna see your face again
Am I ever gonna see your face again
I've got to stop these tears, that's falling from my eye
Go walk out in the rain, so no one sees me cry
Am I ever gonna see your face again
Am I ever gonna see your face again
Can't stop the memory, that goes climbing through my brain
I get no answers, so the questions still remain
Am I ever gonna see your face again
Am I ever gonna see your face again

I knew you guys would love this! Well done for checking it out. Shame you missed getting a later (better) live version so you could see the audience participation part (which developed organically without input from the band). Every time the singer asks, "Am I ever going to see your face again?", you have to shout "No way get fucked fuck off!". Yhe entire crowd would be doing it. It's a great track!

Last saw the Angels (original line-up) at the Hallam Hotel in Melbourne in maybe 2009 - I think it was part of a reunion tour to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the 'Face to Face' album. They played the entire 'Face to Face' and 'No Exit' albums, plus 'We Gotta Get Outta this Place' and this song. Never thought I'd be screaming 'the response' with my daughter (who bought me the tickets as a Christmas gift) right next to me joining in! Great memory!

I saw them in about 80/81 and that was still pre - get f*cked f*ck of but when I saw them a few years later it had been added to the show. Obviously somewhere in between those two dates, sure it was the Palais in St kilda but could be wrong and I bought the famous black tee shirt after the gig outside. My memory is not what it once was.

The song resulted from the death of one of lead vocalist (Doc Neeson's) friends... who was taken away by ambulance (you hear the siren in the guitar riff) and the friend passed away. SO yes is a fun song, its upbeat but it came from a very sad place. It's really a wonderful tribute to Doc's friend, that this song has been taken to heart of Australian Culture in a way that few songs are.

It is a dark song. Someone started yelling 'No Way, Get F**ked, F**k Off' after Doc asks 'Am I ever going to see your face again'. And it is the worst thing that ever happened to the song. Several times I have stood in the crowd shaking my head as people around me screamed out the profanities. Doc would look at me and sing towards me because I understood what the song was about even in the days before the internet and before I could afford to buy music magazines. For some reason I just understood it from the beginning when I heard the original slow version. Anyway, for those wondering why it is a sad song, here is a couple of lines from Wiki. Neeson said that the song was originally written as an acoustic ballad about grief and loss. The girlfriend of Neeson's friend was killed in a motorcycle collision, and the two friends were discussing life after death. The conversation inspired Neeson to write the lyrics.

the Angels have said in many interviews the truth behind the crowd lines (not in this performance), it came to be because when filming the video for the song (done at a live performance), a small part of crowd started it and the whole crowd joined in, setting it in stone, it was an unplanned moment in history that made the song even better and being Ozzie performers love crowd interaction, they incorporated it into every performance since.

Oddly enough you said it sounds like it has a darker meaning it's about a female friend of the band who passed away suddenly. The funny thing is the song come with a crowd response not designed by the band in fact they were taken back and thought the fans they were being critical of the performance. No one really knows were it started from. Imagine you up on stage performing a song you have sung for years and suddenly you sing Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again and the crowd screws back "no way get fucked. Fuck off." and it's the first time you have heard it and you don't know why they are doing it. One of the store is the song was being played at a Blue Light Disco (under 18 dance) in Brisbane Queensland and the DJ stopped it and sang the response.

can confirm as an Australian, the only correct way to pronounce "aussie" is like "ozzie", similar to how you would say fozzy bear from the muppets. to pronounce it where the "ss" is highlighted similar to the word "glossy" is completely cringeworthy to every born and bred Australian citizen. with that out of the way, the Angels are a great classic rock band, with other hits such as "long line", "comin' down" and "shadow boxer".

Back in the day there was a band called ANGEL, and when Gene Simmons from Kiss heard them play he kind of sign them or nurtured them or somehow got them recognitions. If you wish to hear Basie rhythms and very high vocals from a man, I suggest reacting to a song called THE TOWER. They are old now so don't pick them doing it live in the past decade in New Jersey's bars or something. I suggest the album track for full effect

I heard that the song was about the band manager's girlfriend. She had been saying she would go see the Angels, and on the night she finally went, she was involved in a car accident and died. Not sure if this is just one of those enhanced stories, but bottom line is, it is about a woman who died.
