The Cinema Show used to be my favourite song by any artist ever. 25 years later it still holds that title.

I am with you all the way. I was 15 when I heard it, 61 this week. It's still number 1.

A masterclass on drumming and keyboard playing. The album comes full circle with the melody at the closing of Cinema Show and this track.

Genesis is so good at letting the music breathe and expand naturally. Oh, to have Phil and Peter sing more tunes together! Their subtle harmonies are delightful. "chocolate surprise" INDEED. Women's liberation long before it became fashionable! "There is no mystery" Women are the Earth.....rage on sea. And to think they could perform all these tune LIVE by memory. Astounding.

Great you did these two songs together, as you can see, Cinema Show feels incomplete without Aisle of Plenty!

Stunning album. Listening to it 50yrs ago for the first time was a divine time. There's a brilliant version live with Bill and Phil, which I saw, have a magnificent drum meld. Very cool. So on to Yes, Time And A Word or Fragile. 🙏🍁

that's a mellatron, modern synths weren't invented yet. A used one too bought from King Crimson. Beautiful isn't it?

@@lorainejones41 It is indeed a synthesizer, an ARP Pro Soloist. I doubt that a mellotron could be played at that speed anyway, and besides that, it wouldn't be capable of the effect possible with the ARP Banks used.

@@gj8683 yes I know but it was such a new sound back then so beautiful, everyone called it the mellotron synthesizer, shortened to mellotron. With the advance of computers the instrument has changed. Computers took up whole rooms at that time. First the reel to reel tapes then the great invention of the 8 track tape.We thought we'd have flying cars by now. 😂 Albums were always best with big speakers.Albums were like books to be studied carefully for every meaning, friends would all give there interpretation. Now it's come full circle, wonderful.

I lucked into a fresh copy of this when it came out, and was my intro to the band. It has always remained on my top favorites of all time. I still flash back to how exotic it was back then. A Faberge Egg. Nobody knew who they were. Same with my other records by early Floyd, ELP, Gryphon, Strawbs, Yes, Renaissance, RTF, PFM, VDGG.

Excellent choice. Wish there was not so much great music out there, so you might try Phil's Genesis lead singing debut with "A Trick of the Tail", a masterful album next (or very soon). Alas.

Have you listened to "Supper's Ready"? It is a feast for the ears and the mind. However, my favorite album of all time is "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway". This album is almost impossible to review without being blocked. (but you can listen on your own) It is like no other Genesis album. Amazing music. Insane story. Gabriel at his finest with Phil's fusion/rock drumming on full display. Mike on bass is strong. Tony splendid. My only crit is not enough Steve Hackett.

This album is a monument: it showcases Genesis at the peak of their “proggyness”. For more excellent Genesis, may I suggest their 1976 album “A Trick of the Tail”. Although not as “proggy” as this one, there is not a single dud on it, no filler. And absolutely no "complex shenanigans for the sake of being complex” 😄: just plain, beautiful compositions. I hope you continue exploring Genesis with us. I really like your openness and your honest appreciation. Thanks for some fine reactions! 👍

For your next Genesis album, I recommend trying their first one with Phil Collins as singer. It's two albums and 3 years after this one, and it's called Trick of the Tail. Phil brings a different energy as a singer and they still have a strong prog sound. One of their best IMO.

Great balanced reaction to this album. Im a die hard fan of Genesis for some 45 years! Seen them live 4 times...just incredible. This never gets old. A timeless masterpiece album. Suggestion for some "different" prog of the seventies? Check out the awesome Dutch band Focus. Truly talented musicians Thijs van Leer on vocals and keyboards, the massively underated guitarist Jan Akkerman and drummer Pierre van der Linden. Hamburger Concerto was my personal favorite album. I think you'll love it.
