I served 20 years in the Marine Corps (1965-1985) and two combat tours in Vietnam (1965-66/1970-71) . Between tours I was stationed at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, Calif. I was an instructor to recruit and station personnel. Dan Daily was just one of many Marine hero's we taught the new Marine recruits about! T. Boyte, GySgt. USMC, retired

As a younger Marine at the time myself and all of my friends were led by Vietnam vet Marines. They trained us well and we in turn took our experiences into the wars of our future and to lead the younger Marines. IDK what its like today but from my experience over 26 years the most influential issue in winning was always leadership. Not better weapons, not more men, not better equipment. It was always leadership and I was lucky to have served with some great ones.
@conniead5206Ай бұрын
I never heard of that Dan Daley. The was an actor/singer/dancer by the same name and that is who I thought of. It surprises me considering this Dan Daley’s heroic achievements. Hollywood made a few movies about war heroes of WW1 and WW2. If I remember correctly, Jimmy Stewart played the part of one in WW1 who didn’t want to kill people. Somehow he managed to capture lots of German soldiers. Audie Murphy played himself in the movie about his WW2 heroism. Another short guy who joined young. There was a conscientious objector that was sent to the Pacific Theater during WW2. He was noted for saving many wounded Americans by carrying them out all by himself. I do not remember them making a movie about him. I learned a bit because of a documentary.
@SapperSSDАй бұрын
The conscientious objector was Desmond Doss and the move about him is Hacksaw Ridge. The movie is good and Desmond Doss was one of the most courageous men to ever live.

If it wasn't said in the comments already, he had 3 frag grenades and his colt 9-11 pistol. He took out the machine gun with the grenades, shot and killed the enemy commanding officer and captured 14 Germans as POWs. ..... the pistol only had 7 rounds back then and one was used to kill the CO. So he captured 14 POWs with a pistol that only had 6 bullets left. That is GANGSTER!!!

@stonecoldku4161Ай бұрын
For context. Dan Daly used three hand grenades to take out the machine gun. Then used his Colt 1911 handgun to take out one officer and capture 14 soldiers. The Colt 1911 at the time had an 8 round capacity I believe. One of those rounds he used to kill the officer, meaning that he had 7 rounds in the gun, and took 14 men prisoner with it. He captured twice as many men than he had bullets in the gun.
@caseyhart9916Ай бұрын
Those Germans all had the same thought. "He can only kill seven of us, but am I going to be one of them?"
