this is exactly what ive been thinking !! i absolutely loved watching the Fairy Voice Mother's reactions because of how much insight there is to gain, where as with others it almost feels like a chore to watch. well, all I can say is: don‘t hate the player, hate the game. It almost got impossible to create a big audience without doing cheap content such as reaction videos. I always felt uncomfortable to just record my face melting to drops without adding value to it with commentary, skits etc., but at the end of the day even with that I could not compete with pure reaction channels, cause they had a way bigger output due to the fact, that it is way easier to just do reactions. That was one of the reasons why I stopped doing analysis videos on a regular basis, because I wasn‘t getting enough value out of it to make it a sustainable thing. I personally still would feel uncomfortable to create pure reaction videos, because I think the creators of the original content should benefit from reaction videos by getting a split or something like that. But KZbin or TikTok didn‘t implement systems like this - which I can not understand, as there is examples like Spotify. They pay the license holder money for every cover song that gets uploaded, I think its even a fixed percentage of 50%. So yeah, I hate the game, but I get why so many take advantage from it, because it is an easy way to build an audience.

Another banger, I very much think reaction content is way to easy to find relative to creative beatbox content. But I think that reaction videos as a whole have something that appeals to an innate need that we have and that need is being able to experience your passion for something with another person. I do think that reaction content has a lot of potential to be interesting and valuable, but the way it's done right now (at least with most creators) seems so superficial. Hope to see more content like the stuff you're producing in the community, although I can imagine how much work it takes so it might not be as appealing.

This is a bloody brilliant video (and not just because you were nice to me and even made me a special purple Venn diagram 😍) (although I did like that a lot 😍) Reaction videos seem to be an opportunity for people to experience the excitement of watching an amazing performance together. Many exciting things in life are better when they are shared and I think it seems like a win win for everyone that wants that particular from either end, creator or viewer. The point of my channel though has always just been about exploring the capabilities of the voice, it has just ended up taking a reaction video format recently. I personally wouldn’t feel comfortable making a video where I only add my face to someone else’s creation. But that’s probably just because my face is not sufficiently interesting on its own (💔). I have subscribed to your channel and I am excited to see what else you make. Loads of love 💜

That is good; however, the reaction still needs to be made on the better end of the spectrum. D-low recently reacted to an old video of mine (which I thought was completely fine), and while he pulled 40,000 views, only about ~200 people clicked on my original video. Again it is good he points it out, but the conversion might not be as high as you think.

Whether they put their camera or the original video in the corner is a big tell what their purpose is. A lot of channels I have to skip through to their thoughts since I’m not going to re-watch a video 20 times, but I’m sure in their analytics many viewers do the opposite.

@@TylaDubya Unfortunately D-Low stopped doing the POV camera for the battle reactions - it was only for elimination reactions - which I think is a shame not just for the reasons you speak about but also because the POV camera audio also gave some unique perspectives about which beatboxers were translating better to the sound system and had better mic technique, as you could hear the uncompressed, unmastered audio. It gave a perspective of energy and sound quality within the venue that is often missed by those who judge battles purely by the mic line-in, mastered online videos.

Glad you're speaking about this! With a surge in (over)reaction videos, I stopped following the scene on KZbin and switched to IG for staying updated through stories of a few beatbox artists. 》Madox & the fairy voice mother's analysis videos 》DLow's reactions where he provides a lot of insights on why he likes or dislikes a section, how he sees it fit in the evolution of beatboxing, his attempts at recreating or modifying it, and what other artists use the same sound in interesting ways/popularized it 》Sxin & Chezame's (earlier) videos where they hyped videos and then broke down sections, did a tag team version of them, spoke about them in the context of the scene and gave references about the origins of various sounds or artists they felt it'd be nice for the current one to compete against These added a lot of value. A vast majority of the reaction videos feel more like a watch party where you want to share the hype with a friend who also loves the content. It's a different niche, and has its own appeal - but the monetization could be better with majority of the proceeds going to the original content and the view count, engagement metrics, likes adding on to the original. I guess this could be next on the roadmap of KZbin once Google has time to focus on it post the LLM wars 😋

There are many people who, like me, create reactions on beatbox videos and I think it's a very interesting thing if the person who analyzes the video is competent in this regard, it opens your eyes to many things that perhaps you don't even realize. I think a lot of these issues could be resolved if youtube handled things better on its backend, for instance if content ID was able to count watchtime of videos within videos towards the original videos views and monetization. Instead we've got a situation where some videos have copyright claims and others don't. Most channels that do claims, claim 100% monetization on any re-use of their video regardless of how much of the resulting video changes/adds to it, some reactors go through the disputation process to get 100% of monetization back. Theoretically there's nothing wrong with people wanting to see how others react and think about their favorite videos, its just youtube doesn't have a fair system in place to handle this. Edit: But I get that unless youtube does make changes on how it handles things on the backend, it makes more sense to talk about the actual consequences in the current system.
@TylaDubya
@TylaDubya 4 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, right now as a creator the only option you have to deal with copyright issues is to either politely ask the creator to take the video down, or to issue a copyright strike, which is kind of taboo. To my knowledge, the only way to claim monitization from a video that has taken your content is to be apart of a MCN that can make that claim for you (bad idea, don't be apart of an MCN), or to upload your audio to Distrokid or somethat that can make contentid claims based on audio. Though the audio option only really works for solo beatbox tracks since fully produced videos can use sound effects and music that you dont have the rights or licenses to upload to distribution platforms.

So glad someone in the community is talking about this in an informed and high quality way. Low effort beatbox reactions are like icing on the cake to the ever-prevalent issue pertaining to beatboxers always being used for little to no compensation. It sucks to kinda spin this "woe is them" narrative, but beatboxers historically will lend themselves to be used by organizations with little to no monetary compensation for their music/content (think battle organizations) in exchange for views/noteriety in the scene. To the point where they have to be rushed to sign LITERAL CONTRACTS signing away their rights to their music before performing. So when someone just waltzes in and reacts to your battle/showcase with little to no valuable input, (WHICH you don't even have shared ownership of), you can see how it becomes like a big middle finger to the artist.

As an artist it's important to decide the value of your work. Reactions are a bit different then your second point, as the content creator doesn't really have a choice if their content is reacted to. For beatboxers, they have a choice if they want to battle or film a shoutout, and if it is worth it to them, that is okay. I heard about that contract issue, if it happened as described, that was not okay.
@dmercado2023
@dmercado2023 4 ай бұрын
@@TylaDubyaYeah I get that, I could've worded it better. I don't disagree with the existence of or participation in battles or shoutouts, especially after being a part of one myself. It's a great experience. Let me clarify that most bbx channels & organizations are great, and their existence is healthy for artists. The point I was trying to draw was that since beatboxers in general are already in a messy spot regarding the business, ownership, and monetary side of things (I'm mainly talking about Swissbeatbox here), what a lot of reactors don't realize is the amount of nuance that goes into it. When someone lazily reacts to for example a GBB showcase or battle, there's a few things to consider: - The main subject of the video, the beatboxer, is stripped of the right to decide what to do with your reaction of their music. Unless they have shared ownership over that piece of content (they never do), the beatboxer can do nothing but solely rely on the owner of the channel's discretion. - The beatboxer's own content like released music & videos becomes even harder to find than it already is. - If it's from SBX, they're funneling views into a company which has actively shaped the scene and made decisions in a way that takes advantage of artists. It's not fully the reactors fault that these things are happening, and you can agree or disagree with these things, but the reality is that these are very important things you have to consider when choosing something to react to. There's a lot of nuance and it's NEVER as simple as it seems. It really is important there are videos that speak up about this like yours exists, because the culture surrounding reactions is really detrimental to not only artists but content creators in general.

For me analysis videos are in a bit of a different category than “reaction “ videos .. especially with individuals will talk and break down video/routine elements. It makes the difference for me. But I do understand why people watch reaction videos, whether it’s to get the feeling of watching a video with someone or hearing/seeing someone you respect’s reaction to a video or moment you enjoy. It definetly is a complicated topic. I found myself watching more and more reactions instead of the original video. I think it comes down to feeling like I can enjoy the video with someone, since I do not have anybody in my life who enjoys beatboxing like I do, so I can not watch it with friends or someone like that. I just can't get as exicted watching it "on my own". But I also feel pretty bad since I think I did not watch more than one of the Elims or Battles of the GBB on Swissbeatbox, but nearly all of them on some reaction channel. So to make a long story short I really enjoy watching reactions but I also see a the problem they bring to the community so I can't really position myself.

Great insights. I think video reactions and low barrier to entry because as you said they are easy to make, which is a reason why everyone do it - seeking for easy content to produce. These kind of videos work because it hacks the brain dopamine circuit. Humans interact with emotions. Therefore in the beatbox comunity and not only, people want to leave a video with value, either by learning something or by being entertained. The higher value you give, the more likely you will help people and more viable content and engaging comunity you will build. I'm happy you are sharing this message to the content creators to build more orignal content 😊

@@TylaDubya That's how every major business works tho... Netflix doesn't create movies, Uber doesn't own cars, Amazone doesn't create products, Spotify doesn't create music, and KZbin doesn't create videos, YOU do... So KZbin should stop doing business because they rely on channels to create content for it? It's just how business work. Swissbeatbox rely on beatbowers to creare content... I was super careful with my videos to add as much as I could and credit the original video… it can get a bit tedious which is why quantity over quality is the way most people succeed with reaction content. I eventually couldn’t continue anymore whilst being able to pay my bills which is why I haven’t uploaded in ages. I enjoy watching videos on this subject though because it effects what my videos might look like once I’m finally able to start creating again. Edit: also, I found myself super cringe so plan on putting out a more confident/engaging persona… just felt like saying that for my own egocentric reasons ._.

Inkie makes good content too. For example, if you watch his reaction to loopstation gbb 2023, you can see how he analyzes the video. For example, he talked about some things that I initially didn't notice in the original video, such as when Robin used the sound of bells. He also tells how you can achieve some sounds.

Personally, I've never watched a beatbox reaction to a video I hadn't seen the original of first. I search for reactions after I've watched a beatbox video I really enjoy, and I do so for various reasons; whether it's for insight into the beatboxing, or to simply just enjoying the company of the reactor to see how they enjoyed the video in general, even if it's there's not much too it. Even if someone has no insight, if their personality is good and they seem like they're enjoying the content, I'm likely to go back to them to see other reactions to beatbox content I already enjoy. Those with bland personality/reaction won't get as many returning viewers and drop off. Because of this, I think reaction channels are completely fine; most beatbox community members will watch the original, and people who find those videos and aren't in the community and then newly exposed to the content and more likely to look into it further if they enjoyed because they likely wouldn't have seen the original otherwise. Overall, I feel like these reaction videos take aways a VERY small minority of views from the original videos while possibly bringing new eyes that would have never seen it to the scene and possibly helping future content get more eyes on it. It seems a lot of the reaction videos views are people who have watched the original content before, especially when you look through the content and see people trying to point things out in the video that a reactor may have missed, or add additional info to help the reactor understand more about beatbox, etc.
@TylaDubya
@TylaDubya 4 ай бұрын
Although you might watch the original first, that doesn't mean everybody does. When creators are uploading reactions only hours after the original is uploaded, that is creating competition really early on and people might just click on whatever they see first. If the reaction plays the video in full with virtually no interuptions, the viewer just saw the entire original video and might not have the time or interest go watch the entire original video again. To your point about new eyes on the content, that might be true if a non-beatboxers react to content since their audience might not know what beatboxing is, but if it is a beatboxer reacting to beatboxing, their audience already likes beatboxing and might have seen that video otherwise.
@riohzen
@riohzen 4 ай бұрын
@@TylaDubya Of course there will be some people who don't watch the original and instead see the reaction to watch it in it's entirety, but there has to be some kind of trade off. A lot of people find the beatboxing community through reactors, such as beatbox community members requesting reactors to watch the videos, etc. to help it reach further. And yes, a beatboxer reacting to someone else's beatbox video has a higher probability of taking a portion of an original videos views away, but we can't just say 'oh well, only non-beatboxers should be allowed to react to beatbox videos', so it's either having both, or neither and I would argue that allowing reactions has a more positive effect on the growth of the communities viewership overall than hiding away, hoping people stumble onto it. Those beatboxers reacting to videos also introduce people to new beatboxers; countless times I've seen beatboxers reacting to wildcards and stuff of people I've never heard of before since I'm not super deep into it, but I go and check out their content then and see if I enjoy them as well. Obviously it sucks as a creator seeing people react to your content and getting tons of views from it, but I don't think it's possible to gauge how that affects the views of an original video because there's no way to see how many of those views watched or didn't watch the original and whether ANY of those views would have ended up clicking or watching the original video if that reaction didn't exist. I don't believe there are stats on that kind of stuff, so everything is just speculation. It's definitely valid for creators to feel a certain way about reactors using their content in that way, but personally I'll just always be on the side of allowing all types of reactions until there's any kind of study to prove a negative effect of reaction videos because in my mind I see way more positives to it.

I think it's a problem with reactions in general. And this could be solveable maybe through a share of earnings which the original creator gets from a reaction. It can be discussed how it needs to be to be fair. For example 50/50 would be a good start and if some people make good profit with a viral reaction then also the original creator makes a good profit. So it would be a better motivation also to make better quality videos if you can earn more through it then just through the original video, while seeing other reactors earn sometimes way more without the share and without much effort.

5:40 "This combination makes it very difficult to enjoy the original video to it's full potential." To be fair, directly after the Judge Panel POV D-Low do a Reaction/Analysis on the original video with way better audio quality than the first POV segment. Most people probably skip the Panel POV anyway since it's still on the screen in the upper corner when he does the Reaction/Analysis segment. So the panel POV doesn't necessarily mean it makes him compete lesser with the original video compared to other reaction creators. In reality he probably compete with Swissbeatbox more than most other reaction creators simply because of the amount of views he is getting. Just to make things clear, I do like and appreciate D-Low's reactions and I think it's alright that he does them so it's not about that. I may get some crap for this, but I don't have that many people in my life, and none of them care at all about beatbox, so reaction channels are actually really *really* enjoyable just seeing people get exposed to the music I truly love. BUT The approach KZbin is taking where you need to actually add something of note to what you're reacting to for it to be your own video is not the solution. I've thought about this a lot, and no matter what the content creator might have to say about someone's performance, it's still that performer's content. Whether it's Lesage or the Fairy Voice Mother who are doing amazing things for the community or XQC or Josh from the Sidemen who basically just watch a video, the artist who originally created the content doesn't see any of the proceeds. It might be hard to implement, but if KZbin managed to make it so that reactors had to kick back part of the money they received from their video to the original artist, it would be a big step forward. There's no question that reaction channels help introduce new people to beatbox, and for the longest time beatboxers have been happy to take any exposure they can get, but we're reaching a point where the "venue needs to start paying the band to play" so to speak. In all aspects of art, in the beginning, people trade their talent for exposure and are told to be happy they are even getting that, but we're now at the point where the beatbox community can be counted on to show up. Also, if reaction channels disappear and all that's left is the music itself, I probably wouldn't spend nearly as much time on KZbin. I would listen to the beatboxers I know and enjoy, but I probably wouldn't rewatch half of the older stuff I have seen because I wouldn't be thinking about it. To me, the best of both worlds is for KZbin to allow reactions to videos, even if they're not adding all that much, but *only* if the original creator sees a portion of the revenue from the reaction videos. The reactor wouldn't have their video without the original in the first place, so that only seems fair.

First of all, thank you for sharing your thoughts! I agree, I wish KZbin provided the creators a way to claim monitization of their video but unfortunately, right now, the only way to do that is to be apart of an MCN who can make the claims for you. Though joining most MCNs (if not all) is typically a no go since they just leech money and don't provide much value. As creators all we can do is politely ask the video to be removed or to strike the channel, which is typically a no-no. Regarding the point you made about reactions disapearing and not spending as much time on KZbin, imagine if those reactors started creating original and creative beatboxing content, then there would be more to enjoy!

I would say that this is a controversial point. Something like piracy in game industry. I would say, because of most beatbox videos are actually music videos, watching it first time with the reaction doesn't kills the desire to see the original. If you liked it, you may actually watch it again, but what's the point to watch the reaction again? At least I often return to the original music videos. I would even say, that some of the videos I haven't touched if there was no reactions on them. And, you know, when the community is too small that you probably can't show these videos to your close friends and watch them together because they are not understanding anything about beatbox, there is a sociological need for the reactions. So, if these kind of videos have a negative impact, it is not so big as somebody would say. At least, in my opinion.

I hear what you are saying and although some individuals might watch the original video after the reaction, I would argue a vast majority do not, specifically if the reaction video plays the video in full with virtually no pauses or interuptions. I understand that its fun to see a creator that you like watch content you like, though depending on how they go about it, it still can negatively impact the original creator. I get your point about it being difficult to find people to show beatboxing to, though I have found a few people that enjoy them haha

Not sure if reaction videos are taking views away from original content or not. How could you know that? Like with your video getting 200 clicks and dlows reaction to it getting 40k or whatever you had mentioned in another comment.. do you think if he had never uploaded that reaction, you would have collected that 40k views? I don’t really think so. I think if people want to re-watch the original video they will do so either way. I’m on ur side tho mostly, I think monetization should go to the original video.
@TylaDubya
@TylaDubya 4 ай бұрын
I only mentioned that specific example to show that just by telling people to go check out the original doesn't necessarily mean they will. No, I do no believe that video would have gained those 40k views. By the time he filmed his reaction and tried the challenge himself, my original video was already a year old, out of the algorithm, and gained all the views it was going to. I was okay with this reaction and it was fun to see him try the challenge himself. To your first note, from an SEO standpoint, when people upload reactions using the same thumbnail and title only hours after the original, it creates potential competition via searches and recommendations. People might see the reactions before they ever see the original and just click them all the same.

Reactors would be benefited by reacting to what they actually find interesting as opposed to following the most popular videos. The majority of reaction videos are to the most mainstream, high view videos and it feels very disingenuous and "clout chase-y." There's such a rich history of beatboxing so it would be nice to see people explore some of the older videos that are still dope instead of just chasing trends. If I think of my favorite reactor it would be LeetotheVI, a UK Grime reactor who provides a lot of context and typically reacts to what is clearly his subjective favorites. He isn't covering all the big hits that come out as much as he is going for what he thinks is good grime, which includes the up and coming people who are still very much unknown.

Controversial opinion here: I think a big part of the reason Swiss Beatbox exploded in popularity - on top of just having the most superior product - is due to reaction channels. Swiss Beatbox embraced it and allowed their content to be reacted too and all of a sudden, reaction channels with millions of subscribers are watching beatboxing videos - like ACTUAL beatboxing videos, not random viral trash or talent show beatboxing - on their channels and their fanbase is being exposed to it. I've been watching beatboxing content for over 20 years at this point. I also watch a lot of reaction content. When those reaction channels started reacting to beatboxing, shit exploded. Beatbox Battle TV refused to allow anyone to react to their content for years, so while GBB and Swiss Beatbox was getting exposed to millions of eyes in the form of reaction content - and their numbers dwindled because they never got word of mouth exposure online. How many people know that the World Championships happened last year? How many people know 808 Banon (who's AMAZING) won Loopstation at Worlds? How many people know Footbox won Worlds? Rivers GBB23 Elimination got 5 times the amount of views in 2 weeks than FootboxG's World's Elimination got in 6 months. This is all to say, Beatboxing is too small to be "stealing money" from creators. Swiss Beatbox is huge. Beatboxing itself is not. Many of these reaction channels have more subscribers than the beatboxing channels they "stole" from by just reacting to GBB, which brings more eyes into non-GBB beatboxing material. If BBTV allowed and promoted people reacting to the Worlds, they would grow.
@Jackk.A
@Jackk.A 4 ай бұрын
Reactions have played a part in helping Swiss but I think the main reason they blew up was because beatbox levelled up and became more pleasing to a wider range and they had the best beatboxers in the world consistently on their channel in different formats. Big reaction channels with a strong audience can have a positive impact in popularizing videos. @@Jackk.A I agree, for sure. @0 GBB started blowing up before the pandemic though. 2017 and 2018 are two of the biggest years, with some of the biggest videos. During the pandemic, when there were no tournaments - 2017/2018/2019 videos were continuing to get HUGE views while the online tournaments (including GBB and World Champs) did terrible in numbers, most of them barely breaking 100,000 - yet SwissBeatbox still doubled in subscribers in the same time period. I genuinely believe having big channels react to those videos helped push a new audience to the previous GBB's during a time when even the biggest events were getting dogwater views.
