Tuomas didn't think Anette when he composed Amaranth. When he did, they didn't yet know who would be their singer. After DPP-album was composed, they had singer applicants sing those songs, and they found Anette the best one.

I have this belief that it was during this song, around the time Floor has got that crowd devoted to her and Tuomas has his hands on his head in complete awe, that all doubts (if he had any) about Floor becoming an integral part of the band were cleared! The joy he is experiencing is, for all of us that have lived his emotions and inner duels with him, the most pleasant thing to see! And for sure, this version kills it!

Not even... Tarja was the "mach made in Heaven" with Nightwish. Floor's "average" in comparison. I can't even listen to Nightwish anymore after hearing Tarja's Century Child album and some of her best individual songs with Nightwish. She just matched the music perfectly.

You're not crazy. Imo, this is what made Floor succesfully in Nightwish: reloading songs composed for Tarja and Anette's voices and interpret all at a higher level. The entire Wacken concert she sang songs composed for the other two singer's voices, and she did all flawless. You listened 2 seconds from the live at Wacken to noticed "yes, it's better". :)

You are spot on, I get the same feeling that Tuomas adapted his composing style to Anette's voice and the result was pretty good. I was amazed by how creative they were with Imaginaerum. Floor can sing it perfectly due to her versatility. I do not think Tarja could do so well with Anette's era songs, just like Anette struggled with the older songs, their voices are just completely different. Floor is perfect for Nightwish because she can sing anything. They are all beautiful, talented ladies in their own way and each brought something memorable to the epic Nightwish journey so far.

I agree with you that poppy style of Anette was not dramatic enough, IMHO she was leaning to much on the background. Floors version was just so much better, and that is the the difference between the 3 singers. Tarja was too dramatic (to much opera) Anette was too poppy (not dramatic enough) and Floor is the in between, can sound poppy enough and dramatic enough. Floor is the perfect mix. Now i will get a shitstorm of negative reactions to mine, but that is how i feel it. Great reaction, do more of these

I honestly think you and these fans love NIGHTWISH so much your going to support the current singer over anyone else. That said, Annette is 100% head and shoulders better than Floor. Floor is pitchy, and struggles to keep a consistent tone and even the timing of AMARANTHE, which is one of NIGHTWISH'S BEST SONGS!! OBVIOUSLY TARJA is on a totally higher level than either of them.

@@garygwin1741 I support the current ( and best) singer Floor because of what she has brought to Symphonic Metal genre. She's not a relatively unknown commodity like Annette was. Floor was in After Forever which was one of the best Symphonic Metal bands in the 2000's. Annette is a Pop singer and really had no business being there; fault is on Tuomas for picking her. Tarja is head and shoulders above Annette but Floor is her equal in many ways and surpasses her in others. Floor Jansen is the best singer for Nightwish at this stage of their careers. I will give this. It is funny that all the reaction videos for Nightwish are with Floor and not Tarja or Annette. So newer fans may have their judgement clouded a bit. But I'm not one of them. Been a fan of Symphonic Metal for nearly two decades so I know what works and what doesn't.

Floor would look silly during a pure opera vocal. Tarja is one of the top 10 vocalists on Earth. I dont care what Floor's background is. Annette is a True Rock Singer, and you obviously haven't really accurately compared Floor to Annette Live. I've seen Floor live, and ive been to over 100 Metal shows and seen over 400 bands. Floor isnt better than 35% of all the singer's ive seen in Metal. I have over 27 years of live metal show experience, and seen over 400 different bands.

@@garygwin1741 Really, you want to go the one up route with me. Okay, I've seen Nightwish live both with Annette and Floor, never got to see Tarja with them. I've seen Floor with her old band After Forever. I've lost count as to how many live shows I've been to but my first show was Iron Maiden back in '85 for the World Slavery Tour which puts me over 35 years of live viewing experience. Annette is a Pop singer not a Rock singer. I will give that Tarja is a better straight up opera singer that Floor but not by much. Listen to the first two After Forever albums. Nightwish is a Metal band that incorporates classical musical elements not a night at The Metropolitan Opera House hear NYC doing Wagner. My issue with Tarja was that she tended to overdo the operatics on some songs which made them sound weird. Floor doesn't have that problem 'cause she can switch up almost in mid-breath. Floor's performances sound more natural to the flow of the music compared to Tarja's inability to let up from those overly dep tones that she produces. Don't sit there and try to tell me that I don't accurately compare singers. That's all I've been doing as a life long Metal fan. I'll say it again, Floor Jansen is THE Best singer for Nightwish at this stage of their careers.

Exactly, you couldn't make Anette good studio singer, if she wasn't a good singer. Was Anette better singing in studio? At least sometimes she was, like she said herself, she used to sing beautiful songs on stage too loud, and they didn't come nice, it took her a lot of expereince to learn that. @@Aurinkohirvi Nope...even in the demo she has basic pronunciation issues - which for a native English speaker sounds off - I have the same issues with Tarja very distracting - Floor doesn't have those issues - it could be that Dutch and English are Similar. Also Annette has a very nasal voice which I find off putting.

Annette is ok in the studio...but she struggles live especially on high registers ...Floor is the queen of metal...Floor is simply better . If you compare them with live performances it's not even close. Someone compared them live with the song Everdream and Floor blew the roof off her.

If you check out the live versions of the songs with Annette and those with Floor what I find interesting is the body language of the band members. Check Annette doing GLS live, turn the sound down for your own good, watch the band struggle to get through it and check it with Floor and srr the difference in the bands energy. You can see it with Amaranth too, check Tuomas about half way through. What is amazing to me is that Floor had been the vocalist for a short time when the Wacken show was taped, Marko introduces her as a new presence to the crowd. In my opinion GLS was a great song with Tarja but Floor took it to a whole new level, when I hear it with Tarja now it just seems to fizzle at the end not so with Floor.

Check yourself. Tarja is head and shoulders better and calling anyone else "The queen of metal" is ridiculous. Ive seen over 400 bands in over 27 years of going to metal shows, and Floor's performance was quite average. Then I watched other live shows, and my opinion of her increased, but she is inconsistent and pitchy. Annette has a really solid and consistent tone, does some of the older songs better than Floor, and is just a better singer, period. Ive watched live performances where Annette was very good, and songs like Aramanthe and Bye Bye beautiful are just perfect for her skill set. Elan is the one song that is made for Floor and her style. That is one thing Tuomas is great at, creating songs that compliment his vocalist!!

I like Amaranth and it is my favorite song with Anette. I think she does a decent job, at least in the studio version. However, this was the first time I heard Floor sing this song and it took me maybe 5 seconds to decide I like Floor's version more. What can I say, personally I just think Floor has the superior voice. There are some older Nightwish songs that I might prefer with Tarja's version, maybe because I'm so used to Tarja singing them, but otherwise Floor wins every time. Of course this is my personal preference and others may feel differently.

Comparing a studio version and a live version is a bit unfair, but although I also liked Anette as I got bored with Tarja's only classical style of singing, I'm now completely won over by Floor, their Queen of metal, as she can sing in almost any style she chooses, even in the same song.

Mikko Laine I disagree. I’ve seen all three singers with Nightwish. I fell in love with the band hearing Tarja. I was excited to hear Annette when I heard Amaranth on the radio, only to be disappointed when I saw them with her. Then I saw Floor and my love for Nightwish was revitalized. Yes comparing live to studio isn’t a true comparison. But, I think when you listen to the studio version, you’re hearing how the song was intended to sound. Thus, the Annette version is better. Side by side live Floor blows Annette’s live version out of the water. But it still feels like something is missing. It isn’t as exciting sounding as the studio.

@@K9Trooper Well Anette had one huge flaw when it came to live performances. Anette had poor vocal technique to last a full set, she forced some notes trought and stressed her vocals. This can cause lasting impact on the vocal cords, which made her well known for her inconsistency. Anette singing live on a good day sounded great, first time I heard her was during the Dark Passion Play tour and she wasn't bad. However when I saw them during Imaginaerum tour a few years later, you could basicly see how her neck muscles was straining and trying to carry it for her... It don't sound great and are really harmfull for extended periods of time. This was basicly due to her improper vocal technique. The thing is that if Floor or Marko are about to sing a note that don't feel good they just cut it short which may cause one note to go flat, but that's at least safer in the long run... Anette on the other hand pushed it trought, which may work for one gig... but this was a constant for Anette. You can't tour for a year with vocal cords in a constant state of recovery.

All three singers are amazing. But very different styles. My favourite album is Imaginarium and thats an Annette album. So I really don't like people trash talking her performance in Nightwish. She was in the band for a reason. She got picked to sing. With that being said, of course Floor is the best. She is an allround singer while Tarja is more operatic and Annette is more pop/rock. And yes, Nightwish got a totally new sound with Floor and I love it. But as Nightwish lovers, we should never ever take away what Tarja and Annette did for the band. NIGHTWISH FOREVER

You're right but DPP wasn't written for a particular type of voice (classical or more contemporary)and I read that Anette saved this song, it was supposed to be a simple bonus track on the album, but when Anette sang it in the studio the rest of the band was very impressed by her performance and they finally chose it as the second single. So this proves that her voice fits the song perfectly.

The thing is that floor has the ability to make a song come life. Unlike some singers that try to make a song their own version, and end up messing it up. Floor just sings the song, with her stage presence and versatile voice ends up making it her own and kills it.

As far as I know, "Amaranth" wasn't written for Annette's voice, cause she wasn't yet in the band at that time. It's on the album "Dark Passion Play", same as Poet and the Pendulum. None of the songs was written for her voice, but I assume that there was still a strong connection to Tarja's voice in Tuomas' mind.

Worth noting: *NONE* of the music Floor sang at Wacken was written for her - Floor had only been with Nightwish since October of 2012. If I'm not mistaken (correct me commenters) Wacken was a summer festival (June?).

I love Anette's the Poet and the Pendulum! And Tuomas didn't compose Amaranth to Anette. They chose her to their singer after Dark Passion Play album was already composed. Anette sang it better than any other of their over 2000 applicants, they listened almost 2 years, before making their decision. And according to Tuomas, all band voted for Anette.

I'll say what no one else is going to say: ~ The music was written before anyone in the band had ever heard Anette...but that doesn't mean that it wasn't written for her voice. Anette was selected from a set of 2000-2500 applicants because her voice was recognized as the voice of Nightwish. Think of it like when someone says, "I can't define what porn is, but I know it when I see it." Well, in the case of Anette, it was: "There...that's it! That's her! That's the voice we've been looking for!" (Yes, I know that the high notes on Dark Passion Play were at the very edge of Anette's range and that they corrected that flaw for Imaginaerum.) ~ Tarja and Floor were both hired as acts of convenience. Each woman in her time was selected because they were available and capable when the time came (this is called a "satisficing" decision making strategy). Anette was selected by the genius Tuomas, and the rest of the band, after painstakingly going through thousands of vocalists in order to find the right one (this is called a "maximizing" strategy). It's clear to me that they knew EXACTLY what they were doing at the time. Were it not for the interpersonal problems, the authentic Nightwish (Anette) would still be making fantastic albums. ~ I see that this video was 15 months ago. Nightwish fandom groupthinkers have hated Anette since the beginning since she totally changed the vocal sound of the band. It's difficult for people to get past that when listening to Anette live. They'll tell you that she's horrible. That's just gaslighting, usually in reverse order: they tell you that she's horrible before you hear her, then you project "horrible" onto her because it's difficult to go against the crowd...and this crowd, in particular, is...vicious. ~ I love Floor. The awesomeness of Floor is what brought me into the band. I was obsessed for months...but slowly, ever so slowly, Anette became my favorite of the three Nightwish singers (I love and appreciate Tarja as well), including live. Wacken 2008 (available on KZbin) is my favorite Nightwish show...yes, even above Wacken 2013...yes, even above Tampere. I personally think that Amaranth loses its magic with Floor singing and that it'd be wise of them to keep it off of the set list. Actually an easy choice. A live concert experience is much better. It just brings out another level of brilliance. Floor is just fantastic, that's it. I don't hate any of the three, I just prefer Floor overwhelmingly. Queen Floor, the Valkyrie Nordic Warrier Goddess is just superior period. The 80,000+ backup singers are great also. I love listening to how the different singers handle the same song. The prime example is the difference between how Tarja and Floor each handled "Ghost Love Score". Both are live versions.

Well, first off, zooming rapidly in and out like we saw in the... pop music video version was supposed to die with the summer of love at Altamont in 1970, effectively half a century ago. I mean, please remove the children from the editing controls. Yeesh. Secondly, to my ears, Annette sounded like a thousand other pop singers, and live, um, to say she 'struggled' is putting it pretty kindly. Rated where it really matters in lady-fronted symphonic and folk metal today, which is (especially, but not limited to) power, versatility, charisma, stage presence and command of the audience, Floor is in a whole 'nother league. Poor Annette is not a metal singer by today's standards. She's a pop singer and strictly for studio work where they can do enough electronic magic to make it sound okay. Great reactions, mate.

Annette have average vocals and in that song she sings so monotonically and if you will watch any live her performance, her voice range don't let to sing old songs and her stage presence is like what ever... I like the original better and a lot of the tunes written on that album were written around anette's voice so goes to show how incredible the band is. Floor era is the best stuff overall though. She's a beast.

I feel really bad for Annette. Its true, perhaps she wasn't a good fit for nightwish, however I got into nightwish when she was in it. I could never get into Tarjas songs on their own. But Annette is a good singer in her own right. I love floor for her versatility and just because she's an all round powerhouse goddess :) Anyways... I subscribed to your chanel 2 days for all the nightwish reactions that you do... Keep em up :)

As Nightwish is a live band and Anette couldn't live up to the songs live, she somehow manage to do two amazing studio albums. But Floor is a gueen out there on the stage, both vocally and stage presence. But Anette had her songs written for her like Scaretale, Slow Love Slow, Turn Loose The Mermaids, Eva, one of my favorite Nightwish songs, songs worth checking out.

I would kill for good quality live songs of any you mention But there aren't any! Slow Love Slow video from Montreaux with muffled audio, is as I have found the best of the crap quality bunch. Nightwish totally blew Tarja and Anette era for not having great quality live videos! The only one is Phantom of the Opera from Tarja, and Nemo with decent sound quality. Doesn't help selling old albums but maybe they don't care.

I have mixed thoughts. I like chorus better in the Anette's version, but in verses Floor is much more in the same ballpark with the music. Anette's voice is very bright, that kind of tone requires certain type of songs. Obviously pop songs, but also musicals, AOR, jazz... she also shines in "Catherdral Walls" by Swallow the Sun - oddly, because it's melancholic death doom metal.

Yes of course that song was written for Anette. She was the frontwoman for 6 years after Tarja was let go. Anette was the "Pop Princess" and frankly I like her voice on the pop songs. What she didn't have the voice for were the Tarja songs which as you know were the Symphonic Soprano songs. For one of the best examples of Tarja's great voice try 'Swanheart' live which is early Nightwish. Then Anette fell ill in 2012(so they say idk)and Tuomas reached out to Floor who he had worked with before. She was recovering from a nervous breakdown and was not sure she was ready for another gig but they worked it out and the rest is history being written. Floor's great talent is redoing a song a little bit to how she hears it, especially Ghost Love Score's ending, Tuomas' epic masterpiece. She did it in rehearsal and Tuomas liked it so he said yes do it like that.(I hope I got everything in this paragraph right. If not, the Army will hang me).

Thank you for bringing up the problem with getting ugly about different singers. I personally like Floor best but they are all FANTASTIC singers and have had their influence in the band. The fact that they have hels such quality for over 20 years says so much about the band as a whole, and Tuomas amazing musicality.

I am thankful to Tuomas and Annette for Amaranth because they and the Imaginerium Album hooked me on Nightwish. Tarja on Phantom of the Opera and Planet Hell reeled me in. Floor Waken 2013 landed me like a big fat trout.

Tuomas does write for his singers. He's said that in an interview when discussing the debut album Angels Fall first and why the music on that album sounds so flat compared to the rest. When he wrote that album, Tarja wasn't in the band yet so it was more of a generic arrangement if you will. Once the album was released and he heard her voice he was like amazed at how she sounded and wrote appropriately for her voice on subsequent albums. Annette has a high, brassy, Pop style voice so the music wasn't as bombastic compare to the previous album Once. Floor, who was a know commodity at the time singing for After Forever and ReVamp, has a similar style to Tarja but with much more power and more of a Rock, not Pop, style mixed in with her operatic voice. Listen to the self-entitled album After Forver to hear Floor at her peak.

Pop in real quick to say it's okay to have favorites. But what's not okay is insulting, hating on singers, and comparing them with the purpose of bringing one or more of them down. Do not start an argument by saying which one is your fav while talking shit on other singers. Music is meant to be entertaining, and that's what the singers are doing. They have never done anything to you, it's not a civilize human act to disrespect them. Of course their voices aren't gonna be the same but if you don't like any of them, just don't state your opinion at all. Because some of the fans do read comment section while listening, and it does bring down the experience of listening. It's not a competition, they are friends, what will you think if people start trash talking you when you're with friends? They're human too, doing what they love. They don't deserve this. Be reminded that even if people can't see your face, that doesn't give you the rights to act like douchebags. They don't even compare themselves, stop thinking for them, how is that make you a good fan by doing that? Start enjoying music for it being music. No matter who the singer is, like reading books, I will always see something in it. I don't have favorites since I listen to all of them, but I do prefer some songs sung by a certain singer more. Still, it's very low to bring singers down in order to lift certain ones up. Edit: if you're gonna tell me it's okay to trash talk them because they're not gonna see it anyway, do you insult your dead relatives that you weren't close friends with? Spit on their graves maybe? Or stealing something from public thinking no one is gonna need it anyway or it's not that important? If no, then why don't you start doing it since it's the same thing with trash talking singers?

The upside-down thing about studio and album versions is that they are recorded before the tour, when the band and singer actually learn how to perform the new material. To work around this paradox, bands have been releasing live concert recordings. Comparing studio and live doesn't really work. It's like comparing apples to cider. I'm not a fan of Anette. Her being Swedish did cause some uproar in Finland. Let alone the change in vocal style. I'm not a hater, but now that Floor has come in, people have renewed their thrust in the band. Anette couldn't sing some of the old material, but Floor can.

Tarja songs operatic, creates such an atmosphere Anette songs light fun makes me smile (doesnt need to be powerful) Floor can do both but adds more power Everyone has their favorite singer and song, not sure how comparing a music vid with a live performance works but anyhow. Well there you go. Nightwish are now a complete band, at long last. Tarja was one dimensional, Annette was weak and Floor is just about the most underrated Female Vocalist out there. There is nothing she can't sing and yet unless you are into Nightwish or were into ReVamp, After Forever or Northward hardly anyone will know of her. Technically Floor is a Genius. From her Deep Growls to her Emotional Soprano, Floor Jansen is just Absolutely Fabulous.

Actually Tarja sang with operatic, classic (but not operatic) and contemporary style in Nightwish, and all well. Floor sings almost completely just contemporary style, even the old classical songs (like Deep Silent Complete, Wishmaster and 10th Man Down for example). And Floor's singing voice is so monotoneus, I choose some songs from Anette just because her voice is livelier and has more different colours, like "The Siren", "Sahara", "Storytime" and the "Poet and the Pendulum" for example. And then there are songs where Anette just is better all over, like "Slow Love Slow", "Scaretale" and "The Crow, The Owl And The Dove".

Annette has a very pop sound, and Dark Passion Play was partly written without a vocalist IIRC so it wound up a little generic. Toumas absolutely writes for his vocalists and Annette's voice didn't quite mesh well with the heavier instrumentation that Nightwish is best at despite her being a talented vocalist. Her initial reception wasn't helped by the drastic shift to her from Tarja's operatic vocal style. But Floor is in another league altogether. Take a look at "Please Learn the setlist in 48 hours" to get a picture of how she and Nightwish first hooked up, it's well worth the watch.

Anette’s strongest work with Nightwish is with the songs from Imaginaerum, which were written for her voice. She brings a pop vocal style which works better for Imaginaerum rather than anything else. I like all the singers, they all brought something. Unfortunately Anette wasn’t up to it live apparently. Floor is magnificent live.

To your comment about Tuomas writing for the vocalists: that is true with one exception. Dark Passion Play (Amaranth is on DPP) as most of the songs were written before they found Annette. She does a decent job on that record, but she really shines on Imaginaerum as the songs were written for her. Imaginaerum is considered by many Nightwish fans to be their best overall record even though it features their weakest vocalist.

This song is from Dark Passion Play, the album that also had Poet and the Pendulum. Annette was good at the time, and you are correct that they write for the singer, but it still made me miss the Tarja era. Floor makes the Anette era songs her own, and made them better. To use the example above, Poet and the Pendulum was fantastic on the album, but it didn't give quite as much punch to me as having Floor do it, giving it that extra emotion and bite it needed. Annette though did have more emotion in her voice than Tarja though, to be fair to her. My biggest complaint about Tarja was that she didn't really use her voice to express emotion, save for a few rare cases (e.g Angels Fall First). Annette, while having the tendency to emote more, unfortunately just didn't have the voice for the band, the lack of power incredibly obvious with often sounding lost in the sound (e.g the end of Storytime).

Yeah. Tuomas is like tailor who makes hand made suit to lead singer! The song fits best to the original singer! Floor is so,where between Tarja and Anet so she has the easiest job to get those old songs sound reasonable good and she Kills those where Tuomas has made the suit just for her!
