They were a Frank Farian 'project" (he was a very talented German producer also responsible for Milli Vanilli) who released some big disco hits (some had Caribbean flavoured sounds) pretty popular mainly in Continental Europe. The male vocals you hear is not by the guy featured here but by Frank Farian too. These releases still stand the test of time compared to lots of studio trash that's been made the latest decades.'Rasputin" was a huge hit.

Glad that you are back reacting to groups from 70's. From Boney M, please react "Daddy Cool", "Sunny", "Rivers of Babylon". And, please, keep doing ABBA.

In the studio, as per this recording, the male vocal is actually the mastermind behind it all, Frank Farian. When actually live, Bobby did the male vocal. And most of the female vocals were all just the one voice and she is one of three in the group. As for the cultural influences, I don’t think there is too much importance to be placed on that.

Frank Farian got the Boney part from the title of an Australian TV show of the same name. He just liked the name. And I think the M was tacked on to avoid confusion. I turned on the TV one day and it was the end of a detective series. I just caught the credits and it said Boney. Nice name, I thought - Boney, Boney, Boney... Boney M. Boney, Boney, Boney M. Nice sound. Simple.
