I've known about Stan Lee since before the Merry Marvel Marching Society, and I have signed memorabilia all over my house. He has been an inspiration for me, as a writer, and even with all of that, I don't get anywhere near as excited as Jax when I see him. One of the sad things with MCU movies, is that Jack Kirby doesn't get his share of the credit or admiration. Stan and Jack were a team, and I had the pleasure of meeting Jack back in the 70's. For this film, Steve Ditko deserves a lot of credit, that he really doesn't get. He was a strange little man, who didn't like attention, but had some wild creativity that most people would think came in the form of drugs, but he did not partake of them. I remember reading Dr. Strange comics, drawn and conceived by Steve as they were being published, and while he wasn't my favorite character, he challenged my perception of things. Jax, being new to these characters and stories, makes if more fun than it should be to take another look at a great movie. I totally agree with you!

For reference of how strong Strange is in later films, it’s been debated how long he actually spent being killed in looped time when in the dark dimension with Dormammu. The director claims he spent around 10 years in the loop which gave him enough time to really master his abilities, emerging from the dark dimension as truly the most powerful sorcerer on the planet and worthy of filling the position as Sorcerer Supreme
@PhilBagels Жыл бұрын
Which makes sense. From the perspective of "our" dimension, he gained 10 years of intense magical training in an instant. Imagine instantly gaining 10 years training in anything! And that's not like a one-hour piano lesson every week, or even 40 hours a week at a full-time job - it's 24/7 concentration on one thing for a solid ten years! (A side benefit of time being meaningless in the Dark Dimension - and also having the Eye of Agamoto at hand.)

@PhilBagels Жыл бұрын
@@ethanjones5426 I was thinking maybe that the time stone altered his perception "for him", because how do you experience time in a dimension where there is no time? I can't wrap my brain around it.
@SlCKNESS_ Жыл бұрын
@@PhilBagels Nothing altered his perception of time, he got murdered for 10 years straight. That was the whole point of the bargaining. He brought (looped) time into the Dark dimension to use against Dormammu. It was also kind of the point of his sacrifice, he was willing to spend all eternity getting murdered, as long as it meant that Dormammu was trapped in the loop with him.
@CountryMusicMannАй бұрын
He's probably even more powerful than THAT generous estimation. Most sorcerers would learn their spells from the same books, and proceed along the same lines of study. But Strange being stuck fighting a dark god in a time loop for 10 years, with only some journeyman magic at his command . . . that's basically ten years to iterate and experiment with what he knows with no consequences, since Dormammu kills him at the end of the loop anyway. When it comes to using magic to reshape reality, there's likely a substantial "effectiveness" boost to that just for the sheer NOVELTY of Strange's homemade spells, that even potential opponents who ARE familiar with sorcery's capabilities will simply not be prepared to combat.

When this film first came out in theaters, it was assumed the mention of a Colonel that had suffered a spine injury was a reference to Rhody in Civil War and the fact he broke his back and lost use of his legs. However, in the time since its release, the MCU fans have realized it makes much more sense for Strange to have been training at Kamar-Taj for several years and that the injured Air Force officer was more likely the Hammer test pilot. I found it pretty amazing that going back that far to Iron Man 2 was actually your first thought and that you didn't mention Rhodes at all.
@barkingmonkee Жыл бұрын
I don't want to get too much into detalis b/c *spoilers* but doesn't it make just as much sense that several years passed AFTER "Civil War" while Strange was training in this film? There're certainly hints in the subsequent movies that a non-trivial amount of time has gone by.

We're told by a reliable in-world source in [a movie Jax hasn't seen yet] that Strange was still practicing medicine in 2012 during the Battle of New York, so his accident didn't happen until sometime after that, which means the phone call he took moments before the accident, which seems to be about a very recent injury, was quite unlikely to be about the Hammer Tech guy, who was injured in 2011. We're also told by the same source, in the same scene, that Strange would be moving into the New York Sanctum "about five years" after the Battle of New York, so in or very close to 2017. So if the phone call was about Rhodey, who was injured in 2016, then Strange's whole journey from the wrecked car to the New York Sanctum -- so most of this movie -- took place over the course of months, not years (not counting the looped time he spent with Dormammu).
@peterkoester7358 Жыл бұрын
@@christinabrock2893 you honestly think he recovered from the accident, at least two surgeries, traveled to Kathmandu, learned the mystic arts (slowly at first, I will add) and became a Master of the NY Sanctum in only a few months?? Even the Ancient One couldn't pull THAT off. Keep in mind, Stephen Strange was already on Hydra's radar in Winter Soldier, taking place in 2014 in the official timeline.
@christinabrock2893 Жыл бұрын
@peterkoester7358 No, I don't, actually. I agree that doesn't make any sense. What I said is that he has to have done that IF the phone call was about Rhodey. Which is why I think the "Air Force colonel with his spine crushed in experimental armor" CAN'T be Rhodey, even though it sounds exactly like him (unless of course it's a timeline error, which I'm not ruling out entirely). Project Insight was about predicting people's future potential abilities to become threats, not (primarily) dealing with current threats. He could have been on their radar simply because he was a genius. But in fact I do think he could have been in the midst of this movie in 2014. The only hard-and-fast dates we have are that he was practicing medicine in 2012, and he took over the NY Sanctum about five years later. 2014 is between those dates. He could have been anywhere from still a surgeon to deep in study at Kamar Taj.

One thing I love that the MCU did so well with Dr. Strange and the magic side of it in general is how they show that it isnt just raw power that wins the day. Its intelligence and out thinking your opponent. When Dr. Strange was fighting in the sanctum he won because he outsmarted them when they had the clear power advantage. Same with Dormomu, he couldn't hope to beat Dormomu but he outsmarted him.

In general, the release order of MCU movies roughly matches their chronological fit in the timeline (except when they're flashback stories taking place in a different era, which is usually made clear). So Thor: The Dark Wolrd takes place after the Avengers, Ant-Man takes place after Age of Ultron, and Dr Strange takes place after Civil War. Sometimes they're bunched very close together- even simultaneous. For example back in Phase 1, the events of The Incredible Hulk.Iron Man 2 and Thor all take place during the same week.

Just a Correction: the air force pilot with a metal suit that has a spinal injury that they mentioned before the car crash happen, was not the test pilot in iron man 2. That was actually Rhodey (war machine) they were talking about, remember what happened to him during Captain America Civil? ( the movie before this) Also, I really love that you also mention tony stark, Tony and Stephen are actually really good friends in the Comics, and I love that they are similar but also both different from each other. Both Started Out Self-Obsessed and both are blinded by their success. In the beginning, Tony just keep on making great inventions but didn't care about who and what his inventions/weapons were being used for (used for making wars and killing innocent people). Dr. Strange on the other hand, is indeed a really brilliant doctor but he cared about his success and career too much that he didn't have any respect and appreciation towards others, even the ones who cared for him (Christine for example) he even considers himself to be the best Neurosurgeon, the way he always corrects people whenever they call "Mr. Strange" instead of "Dr. Strange" shows great pride and doesn't have humility, therefore he places himself above and look down on others. I really love that both characters developed and now both use their skills both the ones they have and the ones they learn to protect the world. Tony uses technology while Stephen still is a doctor but is also a wizard and uses magic and the mystical arts when it comes to saving and protecting the world.

Just a Correction: We never got any kind of confirmation about who, exactly, the air force pilot with a metal suit with a spinal injury was. Most fans have assumed it was Rhodey, but we really don't know that. It could be the test pilot in iron man 2, or some other similar guy. We don't know. Rhodey was just the assumption because there aren't exactly a lot of air force pilots with metal suits that suffer spinal injuries. Given how famous Rhodey is as the War Machine, if it were him, it's more than likely he would have been mentioned by name. Dr Strange certainly would have been more likely to operate on a celebrity than some random air force guy, and they likely would have tried selling it to him like that. And given that it's clearly not an emergency situation where he has to go 'right now!' (they're discussing options on the phone) the injury doesn't necessarily have to have been something that happened super recently. So it's actually very reasonable to believe it's someone else.

The spinal injury in an experimental armor was referring to Colonel James "Rhodey" Rhodes who was injured by Vision during Captain America: Civil War. 😢 The Ancient One sent Strange on a "Magical Mystery Tour" through the cosmos and various dimensions including the Dark Dimension - home to the Dread Dormammu. 😮 The Ancient One knows about all of the Infinity Stones, she has been around a long time. So far in order... The Tesseract (Space Stone) - Blue The Ether (Reality Stone) - Red The Orb (Power Stone) - Purple The Eye of Agamotto (Time Stone) - Green. 😅 Dormammu desires Earth because it is the Nexus point of reality. If he controls Earth he controls the hub, which is the perfect jumping off point to anywhere in the multiverse. All other parallel universes radiate out from Earth-616 a.k.a. mainline continuity Marvel universe. 😊 The Bleeker Street address is the New York Sanctum which in the comics is Doctor Strange's main abode. It is located near Greenwich Village. 😊 The Celestials were the beings the Collector showed to the Guardians. The Celestials are ancient beings who seeded the Universe with life. You will learn more about them in The Eternals movie. 😊

16:14 The Sorcerer Supreme in the comics was an old Asian man. There was a bit of controversy over Marvel “whitewashing” this role, and I’m torn between loyalty to the source material and geeking out over *Tilda Swinton* . 26:40 No, the one in that scene was the purple Power stone. Although all of the stones are dangerous, I think the Power stone is the deadliest to simply touch. The whole reason Peter Quill had to grab the stone when Rocket blew it out of Ronan’s hammer-thing is that even letting it touch the ground would’ve started a chain reaction that would’ve destroyed Xandar.
@johnniequinn3215 Жыл бұрын
In the comics there was only one Ancient One before Strange started to learn Sorcery. They do mention in this movie that there have been many Ancient Ones before Tilda. I see the MCU as a different timeline to the og comics.
@neospock5034 Жыл бұрын
@@johnniequinn3215 the MCU is absolutely a different universe with different history & lore from the mainstream comics. It's technically Earth-19999, and was designated such in Marvel's own handbook published in 2008. However for the sake of simplicity, when these movies starting getting into the multiverse with characters exploring and traveling between different universes, Kevin Feige decided they wouldn't use that term onscreen. So the actors in MCU movies refer to primary or main universe (where the events of all Phase 1-2 movies take place) as Earth 616. So 616 stopped referring exclusively to the comics and became a way of saying "the main or primary universe". However, comic book 616 and movie 616 are very different realities.

@neospock5034 Yes, thank you, I do know that; but in my Head Canon I refer to the MCU as 1616. 🥸
