I really liked Mexican Gothic and also was excited about the playlist! I love when authors do that. It had such atmosphere and Wuthering Heights vibes which is probably why I liked it. There were some issues with it but overall I flew through it, faster than I expected.

I also sadly didn't really like Survivor Song. I've read 3 other books by Paul Tremblay that all got between 4 & 5 stars from me. So it was a big disappointment to have this one be like 2.5 :( Mexican Gothic definitely had a bit of a slow start. But once the story really picked up I enjoyed it so much. The spooky vibe of the house and creepy family was great.

I think I need to pick it up from my library, um, IMMEDIATELY. Mexican Gothic was the WEIRDEST book I have ever read in my LIFE. In contrast to you I liked the slow, historical Gothic beginning. I liked the mood and the mysterious vibes quite a bit. It was when it went full...well I can't say without spoiling...but basically when we got the dramatic answers I just could not. Wayyyy too ridiculous for me omg

I cannot wait for Paul Tremblay's new book! It's sounded so amazing but what a pity you're disappointed. I still want to read it, though Covid has me suuuuper anxious and I have heard that his book is way too similar to what's going on in the world right now so I'm afraid I'll get really freaked out haha. Kinda sad to hear about the new Paul Tremblay. There is a pretty creepy horror that I recently found called Come Closer by Sara Gran about I woman slowly becoming possessed. Finished survivor song before I saw this video and felt the same way. The opening was epic. I differ in that I loved Josh and Luis more than Natalie and Romola. I felt the guys friendship was a slight reminder of Sam and Frodo. Two buds dedicated to their cause and determined to see it through. I wanted the author to really bring the doom and gloom but we’ve been spoiled by wonderful horror books this year and our real life is now degrading into pandemic horrors. Makes for a great cleanser, quick read if you just want to escape into an easy story.

For me Mexican Gothic was a great read...finished it within two days which is pretty fast for me. I wasn´t bored for one page and for me this is Gothic horror at it´s best. Like those Vincent Prince Poe adaptations with a fresh twist. Also I had no issues with the writing...I´m from Germany and although English is not my mother´s tongue it was crystal clear. But tastes are different, so.

I could not finish Survivor Song. I felt like I was on a bus with a couple of sixth grade girls with all the childish bantering between the two, nothing about their characters said adult to me. It also got to the point if I read "Rams" or "Nat" one more time...

The plot of Survivor Song to me felt like if the first episode of The Walking Dead would be stretched into a full-length self-standing movie and the exploration of the universe would at Rick’s reunion with his family. Yes, it is satisfying, but is it enough?
