I just picked up James from my library and have heard a lot of good things about it. I read The Trees and really loved it. He is an amazing writer and I plan to read more of his works. The God of the Woods has been on my radar for awhile. I hope to read that one soon also.

I do want to read a Liz Moore book as I've heard good things. Your review of her recent book makes me wonder where to start. I read a Marple book last weekend and it completely satisfied the mood reader in me. 😂 Happy listening! 🎧

My seventh grade teacher read Huckleberry Finn to us and 25 too cool for school 13 year olds were totally silent for the duration. I think a reread is in order!

I was trying to remember when I first read it and couldn’t. So…like you, that first reading was AWHILE ago. 😁

I love Huckleberry Finn although I do need to reread it to remember some more details. I also loved James. I think one can love both books for different reasons as they both bring something unique to the conversation. As much as I loved James, I didn't rate it a full 4 (3.75) although I have been thinking of changing that to full 4 because I did love it. However, I wanted more. I think this is of the few books that I have to say the book needed to be longer. I think that one part of the relationship between Huck and Jim (won't put a spoiler here) was not developed and despite what Jim did that showed the significance of the relationship, the rest of that dialogue felt flat as if that part of the relationship was passed as not significant enough, while I thought that twist was fantastic and very significant for the emotional and social complexities of that relationship to have been developed and explored fully. If that had been done differently I would have given the book a full 4.5. I would also have preferred for the philosophical ideas to be heard more realistically through Jim's internal thoughts instead of the sudden appearing/disappearing of the philosophers. Other than that, the book is really good and a great book for good discussions. What the Everett did with the language switch is brilliant! I had started Cleopatra by Stacy Schift long ago and I remember enjoying it, but then not sure why, I got distracted with life and other books and I never continued, but I definitely plan to finish it.

So interesting to read your thoughts on James!! Thank you very much for sharing them!! I hear you on the philosophers, but gosh I ate that up. :)

@@RoadReads Thank you for the great channel. Always looking forward to your reads. I don't have people in my life who read like me, but if I did, I would love an in person or zoom book club where we read both books Huckleberry Finn and James one after the other and we discuss the historical times, the differences between the characters of Jim and Huck in both novels, and the effectiveness and significance of these stories in their respective times (and at least for Huck Finn since James is still new) its endurance in time. Have a great day with more amazing books! 😊 📚📚📚

I can't believe I've never read Huckleberry Finn.... really, there are so many books I've never read..... your comments on James makes me want to find a copy of Huckleberry Finn now... Darn, guess I'll have to go up to the second hand book shop in town next 😃

I read quite a bit of Cleopatra when it was fairly new (at least 5 years ago, maybe more) and I think it is a great example of how not to write a biography. There was no momentum in the telling at all. This is a fascinating woman and the author made it so dull. Anyway, just my experience. Maybe I am in a mood, too. 🦋

I’ve been hearing a lot about The God of the Woods and I was meaning to look into it, I hadn’t realized it was a mystery though 🙃 I loved Cleopatra! But as you know I love reading history haha. And I didn’t know anything about Cleopatra’s life, so everything was surprising to me!

@@RoadReads I love her writing style, but I also know of a lot of people who don’t get along with it, it has very mixed opinions in the historsyhon discord 😝 I also really enjoyed her book about the Salem witch hunts, and she has a biography of Vladimir Nabokov’s wife (Vera), that won the Pulitzer Prize. I really want to read that one 💕
