Pet Tumblr was wild because you'd see people with the strongest, most inflexible opinions and asshole rhetoric... And then you'd see their bio and they're, like, a 15 year old who's been keeping one aquarium for 6 months. @@boneshatter9979 while yes, some species of clowns did evolve within tents, namely circus clowns, rodeo clowns, and other show/work breeds, the evolution of other subspecies has not yet been determined. Scareclowns for instance. I own one of these myself, and while it is preferable to have a tent for them, it is not required, nor is it their natural habitat, and to assume they evolved within them is ignorant imo. Mimes are another species most often found in populated areas, in contrast to scareclowns solitary nature, but like scareclowns are not found in tents. Mimes tend to be found in invisible boxes. Railroad clowns are found on railroads, surviving on human scraps, once again, far away from tents. They do not simply appear, as clown breeders show, but how do they get there?

My mom had a mime before i was born that died of the exact opposite reason. It couldn't get out of its invisible box and suffocated in there. I suspect my parents were uneducated about proper care, because that would never happen to a mime that was given a proper diet and environment. Unfortunately this was before information on breed specific husbandry was widely available, people thought you could give every breed the exact same care back then. She was very attached to him and hasn't owned a mime since.

Honestly it's disgusting that stores are still allowed to sell mimes to literal children, just because they're "easy to care for" relative to other clowns, not to mention how they always sell parents on the cheapest possible option (fair-grade face paint, glass boxes over truly invisible, etc.) even though they're really harmful and unhealthy. :(
@flowersky31__49

Yeah, sadly a lot of parents get mimes for their children without understanding the actual effort and care that has to go into keeping them. Because they can get quite small and are noise less, many assume that their life time is short regardless of care. They can actually live just as long as other breeds, provided the right stimulus and loads of invisible cigarettes.

@@maca76 Agreed. You should obviously not just assume that stuff you read on Tumblr is true with 0 factchecking, but a surprising amount of stuff you read on the site, depending on who's posting it/where it comes from, is actually true. As someone who grew up in a pretty political and progressive home, who got on Tumblr and then later took sociology courses in undergrad: the sociological concepts I first read about in social justice circles on the site, were actually pretty accurate to how those things are believed to work in sociology. A lot of history, sociology, and natural science/biology stuff I've seen tends to be pretty accurate (mind you, this was before the 2017 Tumblr exodus, so a lot of the people in those fields who were posting factual stuff may no longer be active). Obviously, it's still worth checking on the source blog and doing a Google search to confirm, but there's a surprising dearth of actual, serious/deceptive misinformation or disinformation on Tumblr in my experience, versus other sites I've been on like Twitter, Facebook, or KZbin. A lot of the made-up stuff tends to be memes that someone takes seriously, fake "r/thathappened"-type stories, or sometimes something taken out of context that grows into a myth or conspiracy theory on its own.

Actually, the term is “yesanthropology,” and tumblr clown discourse does not fall under that field of study. It was specifically coined for the improvisational breed of comedian, a convergent species that evolved from the musician, NOT the common fool. They belong to two entirely separate classes. Seriously, it’s the year 2023 and we’re still appropriating terms for comics? They are wildly different creatures! This is why people bring stand-up breeds to dime-a-dozen clown vets.

My clowns are both rescues, because we of course do not support clown breeding on this house. I’ve had Beep and Kaleidoscope for nearly three years, and while it’s been a unique experience with many learning experiences along the way, I wouldn’t give my girls up for anything in the world. Beep is a party-babydoll mix with the cutest little pointy hat and Pom-poms that jingle when she’s excited. Kaleidoscope is a circus-Pierrot mix, which is a fairly rare breed as far as I’ve heard. Before she was rescued and we adopted her, she was being kept in terrible conditions and used as a mascot for an amusement park. To this day any clicking akin to a roller coaster’s tracks or too much loud laughing or screaming will drive her to hide in her tent without coming out to eat, sometimes for days. Let this serve as a reminder to you all, DO NOT SUPPORT BUSINESSES WHO USE CLOWN MASCOTS. They are almost always mistreating their clown!

this is really a dangerous misconception. firstly, some clowns thrive as mascots as they require daily activity with large crowds and consistant activity. secondly, we need to stop the spread of the idea that clown breeding is inherently bad. there are many clown breeds (such as the babydoll) who are bred unsustainably and often have health conditions. support healthy breeders while condeming backyard breeders because it is important for the future overall health of clown- mime generations.

It's really sad how many people played Skyrim, ended up loving Cicero, and decided to go out and buy a clown without doing proper care research. Breeders ended up trying to produce that lovely red-and-black coloration in huge quantities, but it's actually genetically linked to a variety of neurological issues. Luckily, the craze has died down over the years, but you still see a lot of clowns with that color palette in shelters (or worse, as ferals).

Thanks to that though, ball pits are now Clown Egg Nests in my mind.

I had a friend who tried to tame a feral common White-Face Circus Clown. It did not end well for him and he now has PTSD. These clowns are highly territorial and aggressive and will defend their turf with their teeth, claws and various weapons, such as rubber chickens, whoopee cushions and seltzer bottles. They are also very intelligent and adaptable, and will use their skills of disguise, deception and distraction to try to escape captivity.
@Romanticoutlaw
@Romanticoutlaw Жыл бұрын
as your friend learned the hard way, you should NEVER try to remove a wild (and it sounds like this clown was wild, not truly feral!) clown from its natural environment without a professional, and even then, it's not advised. A feral clown breed can be domesticated with a lot of work (less if you rescue them young) but a wild clown is nearly impossible to domesticate. Of course, some breeds take to taming easier than others (party clowns, babydolls, some circus crossbreeds) but as a rule of thumb, it's always best to tame a larval or pupa clown if you're getting them from the outdoors
@27ratsinatrenchcoat90

I also have clown related PTSD, due to a badly trained Evil clown and Funhouse clown mix, I'm unsure if it was feral and its owner was trying to tame it, or simply really badly bred and trained, but now even images of clowns of any breed make me go into fight or flight. Only a few times have I been able to interact with a clown without having a panic attack, and those instances were mostly party clowns. Clown related PTSD is real, and I'm tired of being called a mindless clown hater who only believes in stereotypes. To everyone who reads this, train your clown well, and no matter how well trained your clown is, don't bring it near strangers without asking first! Always notify people if you're going to bring your clown to events or into someone's home, because you never know what someone has gone through

@@27ratsinatrenchcoat90The clown community will have you think that not having a clown is a miserable existence. It's great that they love their clowns, but clowns are not for everyone. Furthermore wild clowns would probably have a better life just left alone without hunans trying to domesticate them. People talk about domestication like it's something that should happen for every clown and seem to forget that they aren't here for our personal enjoyment.

Fun fact; Arguably the first domesticated species of the convivatus genus is the Skald, a truly ancient breed that popped up in the nordic region some 15,000 years ago going by the fossil record. Skalds were originally bred from the Bard that is known through most of europe, western eurasia and northern africa, keeping the poetic prose but emphasizing a mire trusting, loyal nature and lack of skittishness as seen in many modern clown breeds. Of course, for the Skald this was so that they could join warriors on the battlefield without wavering, singing and insulting the enemies to demoralize them and raise the spirits of their human companions, and occasionally being let loose on enemy encampments as both distraction and supply destroyer.

It's like we get to step back and stop taking everything so seriously for a moment and appreciate how ridiculous the debates of modern-day society are. I *must* say, this video was incredibly informative. I have recently rescued my first clown, a juvenile birthday clown who was confiscated from a breeding mill that the local law enforcement *finally* cracked down on. While there wasn't too much information specifically covering his breed in this video, it did give me some wonderful starting points! Question for more experienced clown owners, do you have any recommendations on how to safely socialize a birthday clown? I believe that as a result of his poor environment while in a critical phase of early social development, he is significantly underdeveloped socially. He has shown no signs of aggression, but has certainly shown several other antisocial behaviors I have come to understand to be uncommon for his breed.
@kurshetl
@kurshetl Жыл бұрын
The first thing I'd recommend is to get him tested for genetic problems. Birthday clowns come from a restricted gene pool and can have severe behavioural problems as a result, and breeding mills often breed from carriers of these traits - they only care about the look of the juveniles, not the behaviour of the adults. However, if your Birthday has a clean bill of health (fingers crossed!) then they can be socialised even as young adults. Patience and calmness are the key. It'll take a lot of time and effort, and you may get a pie in the face once in a while (or at least a cupcake or two), so you may want to keep a mask to hand. Also bear in mind that he'll be socialised to you in particular, not humans in general - he's never likely to be good with strangers. He's never likely to be as demonstrative as a 'normal' Birthday, so don't let that worry you - if he's eating well, not overusing his makeup remover, and gives you an occasional honk or string of handkerchiefs, you're on the right track. Good luck!

As I grew up in a state with an official PRCA Rodeo circuit venue in my home-town, I highly appreciate the acknowledgement that circus clowns and rodeo clowns are distinct "species." Fun Fact, Rodeo Clowns are also known as Bull Fighters for a reason. During the Bull-Riding (and bare-back horse bucking riding) events, the Rodeo Clowns serve the vital function of both distracting the bull and leading him out of the arena. This is very important because there's no graceful way to dismount a bucking bull or horse, and if the rider is flung off of the animal at any point during or after the 8 second time, bruises, sprains, and even occassionally bone fractures can occur, especially if the animal tramples them. The rider has seconds to hobble away, and the Rodeo Clowns give them the window to do it. Sad Fact: The combined role of doing both comic relief and bull fighting has waned in recent times, but there are still some individual Rodeo Clowns who provide both the funny jokes and the livestock distraction/rider protection role.

@JosRocks410 Indeed! Also of note, Rodeo Clowns have physical comedy routines they do, but they also provide a sort of improv-style stand up act, as the main clown is usually mic-ed up. It's to keep the audience hyped in between events, and sometimes even during events between each competitor. The rodeo clowns I've seen before tend to have a pretty dry/Dad-style of humor, mixed with some Innuendo. They will also sometimes use topical humor from the perspective of a "boomer" mentality of an older, middle-aged guy trying and failing to keep up with trends.

This video has actually been super informative! I have been searching for some sort of Clown Husbandry community because I’m a new clown owner. I rescued a Mardi Gras clown from a kill shelter last month and I know this is a more beginner friendly breed, however, I worry about how lonely it may get. I currently don’t live anywhere that hosts parades. Most people in my area don’t even know what king cake is. My clown has been extremely patient and docile but I worry about it getting depressed. We have an afternoon tea everyday (I work from home) but I’m not sure if that’s enough for it to feel less lonely. It’s bead production is not like any other Mardi Gras clown I’ve seen- could it be the runt of the litter? If so, do any clown experts have any tips on caring for a Mardi Gras runt? I love my clown and I want the best for them.

As someone from Lousiana, I've been around Mardi Gras clowns my whole life. You can find some simple clown sade kings cake recipes on many blogs for bow to care for clowns. In a pinch however you can use any cake as long as it has clown safe sprinkles in green gold and purple as it will snulste a proper kings cake. For bonus enrichment you can buy the babies (small plastic ones of course since Mardi Gras' can't handle a meat rich diet) in bulk. As for the beads, it could be a number of things, from what troop your Mardi Gras comes from, to it being a mix Breed. Though since you got them from a shelter I'm not sure how much info you have on the little guy. I'm so glad you hose to adopt instead of shop, good luck with your clown!

I adore when tumblr takes a concept and expands on it with no sign of irony or any hint that they’re all making shit up besides the pure bizarre nature of the posts. Like, Clown Husbandry and Goncharov are so fun to look into because everyone involved takes it so seriously, it’s like taking a peek into a different reality. It’s like the best possible outcome of the tumblr lie phase

@@msjkramey It’s a more recent tumblr meme from roughly a year back now, it’s essentially a fake Martin Scorsese film from 1973, but everyone talking about makes it sound incredibly real. Semi-coherent fanart, consistent quotes and characters, the whole nine yards. Even Scorsese himself played into it at one point. I very much recommend scrolling the tag, it was so fun to watch unfold in real time, and even funnier how convincing people sounded and how well everyone played into the bit. I had friends who heard about it separate from the sources and mentioned wanting to see it

I have wanted you to revisit Clown Husbandry since you first talked about it years ago. I love this concept so much.

I personally have a Jester. Like a clown, but she's much more witty than any clown or mime. Unfortunately, I always have to correct people because they can't tell the difference between my beautiful Court Jester and a lowly Party Clown. While I'm thinking of it, I'll go give her a treat because she deserves it. Edit: she was a stray. I found her being creeped on at a Renaissance fair, so I took her home, gave her a leg of lamb, and let her feel at home in my living room.
