Fellow anthropologist here! And I have a vocal fry as well, and I am not even an English native speaker. I live in Austria, so German is my main language, but I have a deep voice and consume a lot of American content. That´s why my English sounds more American than English. I personally find it tightly problematic that people feel the need to shame the way others speak. It is ignorant, to say the least. We definitely need to educate people more about the cultural aspects of language.

Hi! Here is your 4th speech pathologist confirming you do NOT have a vocal fry. And you’re right, if you do have a vocal fry, so what?! Personally, actual vocal fry bothers me a bit due to my training/education and because I know people aren’t using enough breath support when they speak. And if you need a little more confirmation here, I wouldn’t be watching your channel if you used a vocal fry because it’s distracting to me. We all have a choice of what we watch. Honestly, vocal fries do come across to me as annoying. I think they can make the speaker come across as condescending. However, I sometimes find myself doing it. I guess it happens because I pick up on it from other people, similar to a dialect. Hannah doesn’t have one at all though. At least nothing I’ve been able to pick up on. I’m interested in this too, and I’ll be going on a deep dive as well!!

I find that vocal fries can be a part of either a local dialect or act as subtle speech inflections. I tend to use them subconsciously when speaking especially if I want to exit a conversation without having to explain myself. There's a difference in how words are received by a listener if the speaker's vocal fry is a higher or lower pitch. I don't get upset when someone's voice deepens or they are taking a breath in the middle of a sentence. I generally ignore vocal fries unless it reveals a change in the tone of a conversation. Also, this is how I read that comment because my internal auto-correct is always on and I try not to correct people. 'Do any North American women talk properly anymore?' changed to: 'Do any North American women know how to speak properly anymore?' 'I'm so sick of vocal fry and I really can't listen to it anymore,' changed to: 'I'm sick of vocal fries and cannot stand to listen to them.' 'Why do you have to growl at the end of every sentence?' changed to, 'I noticed there is a growl at the end of every sentence.' 'It's absolutely awful to listen to,' changed to: 'This has been awful to listen to.'

About the vocal fry comment at the end: I do understand how vocal fry can be difficult for some people. While that person was absolutely rude to you, I'm a person who cannot to save my life listen to someone with a vocal fry-y or even super raspy voice. I'm autistic and that sort of sound is incredibly uncomfortable, to the point of almost painful for me (think blood-curdling), and I am definitely not alone in that in the ASD community. So even if the person with vocal fry has a good point I just can't listen to them speak. If they write it out, like captions, fine. But listen? Nope. That being said, I find your voice quite nice to listen to. You articulate quite deliberately and that makes it quite easy for me to pick up on your intentions and exact meaning of what you say, making your videos really great for playing while I draw. So, keep up the great videos! Just wanted to share that insight that finding vocal fry unbearable or at least difficult to listen to is actually somewhat common for autistic people.

Thank you for making this video! I haven't been able to post on social media for months now due to hate comments. I don't even post anything controversial since I just share my handmade jewelry, but even with that, I would get angry trolls who would make rude and mean comments. For a while, I thought I was the only one who got haters and thought something really was wrong with me. It helps to know that it's just the nature of the internet and that you can be okay and let the comments roll off of you

I'm so confused by these comments criticizing the way you talk bc a big reason I love your videos so much and have watched almost everything on your channel is because the way you speak is so calming to me. I so often have to turn off youtube videos bc the creator is either talking wayyy too loud, too slow, or something else about their voice is bothering me and making me very anxious (I have pretty bad anxiety and am easily overstimulated). I have found the way you speak to be so clear, articulate, perfectly paced and the perfect volume in my opinion! I have no idea what those commenters are talking about tbh

This was fantastic. I like how you take these mean comments in stride and actually turned a lot of them into teachable moments and or used them to make great points about both MLM companies and the reason you say the things you say. Never stop being you because you are so awesome and inspiring!

vocal fry has become the new southern accent. I was teased to no end for my southern accent, so much that I hide it as much as possible. Drawls are associated with uneducated, trashy, messy people and have no place in a professional setting. Now that's extended to vocal frys - which I tend to have when I am hiding my accent. Can't win for losing.

It is really sad that a person would believe there is no mind-body connection. There is literally a claim one can sue for in court about the mind-body connection. Depending on the intent of the defendant, you can sue for Intentional Infliction of Emotional Distress or Negligent Infliction of Emotional Distress. One of the elements is that the person must have a physical manifestation related to the thing the other person did/said. Like if an ex-husband wants to hurt his ex-wife by telling her their kid was in an accident and hurt/killed, but he was lying about it. The ex-wife would likely suffer a physical response from that information. Some women have even miscarried over learning tragic information. The husband of the teacher slain in the Uvalde attack just died of a heart attack (broken heart). How strange that people argue over such basic stuff.

Love these and your attitude. I broke out in hives in April 2020 based on the abrupt changes in my life brought on by COVID. I live in NYC, one of the hardest hit places at the time and I had several close relations who got it. Add to that living alone and my entire life doing a 180 by being stuck in my home and significantly stressful work. My dermatologist told me that the hives were due to stress and anxiety. But sure, random commenter on your video must be correct.

I really wish I had access to a video like this a few years back when I received a slew of hateful comments from a single troll over fiction writing I shared on a popular public platform. The response to my story was overwhelmingly positive but that one troll caused me so much anxiety and stress, I ended up feeling fearful of ever sharing my writing on the internet again. I think Hannah's approach of analyzing these comments-the possible who, why, what- is so healthy and offers perspective. It also kind of lets you get that power back that a mean comment can rob from you. I think Hannah's videos are informative, thoughtful and fun.

I just found your channel and couldn't agree more! I lived in a small country town in Australia for a few years and due to the lack of employment, MLM reps will target these women as being the ONLY way to make money. They will have party after party for every major MLM, sign up all their friends and then message everyone they invited to make sure you buy from them and not the people they signed up at the last party. I was nursing for most of the time I lived down there in a number of different hospitals and care homes and when a friend was diagnosed with meningitis some woman commented on a Facebook post of hers "past tense roller". I replied "what the hell is past tense roller" and NOT EVEN 30 SECONDS LATER I received a DM for DoTerra oils. This lunatic woman actually tried to recommend a doTerra oil to treat meningitis!!!!

Hello Hannah. Thank you for your informative videos that are always entertaining and compassionate. I was surprised that someone left such a negative comment about your voice, the "vocal fry" comment. I have a rather bad larynx disorder that drastically affects my speech and voice and have been told several times that its painful to listen to me speak. You have a very beautiful soothing voice that works well for commentary and in reading the stories for your videos. I just wanted to let you know that what you say, and how you say it, are awesome!

I am a bit intimidated about my own channel growing because I don't have enough of a thick skin to handle mean comments. I remember one person who commented on one of my videos with just one word: annoying. It was a mystery box unboxing and it didn't have any context, so I wasn't sure if she was calling ME annoying, or what I got in my mystery box annoying. It bothered me, and I still think about it a year later. I admire your approach and that you are letting the mean comments roll off your shoulders - thank you for being you.
