17:09 I've read Wexler's "The Knowledge Gap" and Hirsch's "The Schools We Need and Why We Don't Have Them". At least part of the reason public schools teach the method-without-content approach has to do with the fact that every tax-payer has an opinion about what should be taught and what shouldn't be taught (natural selection vs. Creationism, for example). There's no way to accomodate everyone who pays into the public schools except by teaching nothing specific, i.e., method-without-content.

I’m a millennial and reading was my least favorite thing until I read Dracula and Atlas Shrugged a few years ago. My reading comprehension was poor. I agree that the federal way to test for comprehension is wrong.

I’m trying to think what would have helped me become a better reader in high school though. Less required novels to read, leaving the only reading for subject Textbooks; or more novels, because I can’t remember how many novels were required to read-it must have not been many! For the most part, as a student I needed to take reading and learning more seriously. Socially I was very devout, and that was my biggest worry. I had no care for my own understanding of the world.

This was a breakout session at a conference, not a keynote. I found the content to be very insightful, far from boring.

If it’s a problem for you, start a KZbin channel where you make the same content in a more engaging way.
