I've been watching some Jim Henson documentaries and other puppet stuff recently, and I just realized how amazingly skilled Arlo is! He's so fluid and lifelike!

Agreed! It's not an often discussed topic as people don't like spoiling the magic (fair enough!) but he's actually so good at it and not amateur at all. He really does become so easy to see as just, a living blue little monster. It makes me wonder how he would fair with a custom made, perhaps slightly more complex puppet, with moving eyelids and expressions and stuff. It would be pretty interesting to see someday..

Still, new characters in Mario Kart over a new Zelda?? There are already like 30-40 and seeing the back of a different character while driving doesn't really make it a whole new or more interesting game...I really don't get the big hype for characters in Mario Kart...it's not like in Smash where every character is different in terms of gameplay, here it's just a cosmetic difference for the most part. I'm way more interested in new tracks...yet still not more than new Zelda though. :D

@@Ray_2112 I don’t think there are many people who care about both franchises who would disagree with you, I think most people like that would love a new zelda way more than mario kart characters. But sometimes people like to talk about what we did get instead of what we didn’t get. You’ll make yourself unpleasant to be around that way. Besides, untill tears of the kingdom runs its corse it doesn’t make sense to get an announcement yet. But to answer your question a little, ya there’s a lot of characters in MK, but a lot of that quantity is despised. The babies and pink fold peach especially. So imagine you’re someone who always played birdo, and you see birdo is missing, yet, pink-gold peach is included! For some people it’s about writing a wrong.

@@Ray_2112 The Zelda trailers, at least in my opinion, have not generated a surprise announcement on the scale of the reveal that characters can be added into Mario Kart with the Booster Pass. The excitement for the new Zelda is because it's a new Zelda, it's obviously going to be good, everyone is going to love it, the trailers are not directing this excitement other than reminding and reassuring people that the game exists. This Mario Kart announcement on the other hand came out of nowhere and is letting speculation run wild with what characters could be added before the Booster Pass is over. I am more excited to play Tears of the Kingdom than new characters in Mario Kart, but the trailers for Tears of the Kingdom have been far less interesting than the discussion that's generated as a result of the Birdo reveal.

Layton only being a tease with no gameplay is fine with me. The core 6 games have very similar gameplay (I'm assuming this won't differ too much), but it's fun to go into the story blind, so just the fact that he's back is a relief and welcomed surprise. I just hope with the jump to console we still get those amazing hand drawn cutscenes.

The core gameplay with Katrielle Layton isn't that different either, and the Layton side of Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, while slimmed down a bit, is still very recognisably Laytonesque. After 8 solid games varying the formula gradually, I'm just happy we're getting a 7th main game, and reasonably confident that it'll meet the standards set by the rest of the series. Though I do remember the Zero Time Dilemma announcement and the overambitious game that resulted, so I'm tempering my optimism somewhat this time around - while also remembering the various circumstances that helped contribute to ZTD being a bit of a disappointment.

I think the excitement over Birdo is a sort of subconscious excitement for other new characters. This is the first wave we’ve seen include a new character, something no one was expecting, and raises questions. Is it only Birdo? Or could we see other returning characters, like Diddy Kong and Funky Kong?

The only reason Nintendo added Birdo was because she was one of the "How aren't they in this game" characters that the fans wanted to see return. Also, we got new tracks at the same time? Why can't they just both be exciting, it's not a competition to get your specific attention. I mean, Zelda Breath of the Wild sold nearly less than half of what MK8D has sold, it makes sense that they'd want to give such a big audience more content than just new tracks. Like, look beyond what you yourself want and see all the excited MK8D fans who are speculating which of their cut favs can return. Also, MK8D characters do play different, otherwise there wouldn't be a tier list of character and cart combos.

I really like this series idea, considering Arlo usually carries the coldest takes of any Nintendo channel. I like seeing him maintain his cold takes, but also explain them and evaluate more controversial takes, and whether or not they have merit. I was expecting a ‘hot take’ series to be full of dumb crap I’d get upset about, but I really can’t get upset at anything Arlo does.

My biggest concern with Oatchi is its potential to clash with Pikmin's core identity. One of Pikmin's strongest selling points is the idea of fighting to survive on a hostile alien planet. In spite of the round and cartoony character design, friendly creatures on the planet are a rarity, and even docile ones like the Mamuta and the Spectralids have an aura of mystery surrounding them that still make them feel a little disconcerting. Even the Pikmin can feel uncanny at times with their blank expressions and unnatural place in the ecosystem. In comparison to creatures we've met so far, Oatchi feels very much like a regular Earth dog, an oddly familiar and comforting image for a Pikmin game. The last thing I want to feel when exploring the world of Pikmin is a constant sense of comfort or familiarity. I want any feeling of safety I experience to be a fleeting sense of reprieve as I barely escape to the next sublevel of a cave or eject out of danger to return to the atmosphere at the end of the day. Perhaps there's something more to Oatchi that could keep it in line with the off-putting nature of the Pikmin planet, but it's not reflected in the trailer. The closest point of comparison I see would be the Bulbmin, another friendly-looking creature that follows our every command. We recruit those by killing its parent and abandoning them shortly after, which falls right in line with the hostile nature of the environment we're forced to struggle against. What I value about the Pikmin planet is how it always feels bigger than us. We may triumph within it to achieve our goals, but we never triumph over it. The best we do is survive against it and escape. The planet is not something we can tame or befriend. Any one Pikmin we control is here today and gone tomorrow. If we are on the planet, we are not safe. That's the factor I don't want to lose, the factor that made Breath of the Wild feel more like a Pikmin game than Pikmin 3. Oatchi might not affect that at all, but that would be my main concern.

What it will take (for me) for Oatchi to deserve the spot in the game - - Must be a resource that can be managed. Be it something of limited availability, limited mobility, or just having to consider where Oatchi is in the level and how to use him to multitask, I want it to play into the strategy. - Must tie into the story in a meaningful way. If Oatchi is sent with the crew *in order* to sniff out survivors, that'll make sense! If he just... shows up, somewhere on the surface, I'll be less inclined to like that inclusion. - Please don't be annoying to control...

I always play these games with 0 pikmin deaths, and you can't make more of this dog of course, so I don't want him to just be OP and make it easy, or make strategizing with the pikmin pointless.

You could walk all the way back, wasting time, to get more and safely fight the big enemy across the river, or you could get on the dog and fight the enemy with all 100 instead. See how that could be OP? For people like me who like to not have a single death, and also play in a timely fashion (not necessarily speed run strats, but time *is* part of the games, that's why there's a timer after all), we strategize and tend to not always have what's best for individual scenarios, but what's best for all scenarios that are planned for that day. So we divide our 100 in very specific manners depending on the day's plan. Always having all 100 available makes it way easier.

I came to the same conclusion that others are saying in the comments about Birdo. It was more the fact that Nintendo was adding new characters at all was exciting, not Birdo itself. There is a chance for more characters down the line, either existing racers from the earlier mario kart games, new ones from the super mario extended universe, or guest characters from other franchises. But with that said, who should get the dream slot to race with the best?

While a lot of stuff wasn't a ton of "completely new stuff," I didn't really expect that in this direct. We already knew more about the first half of 2023 than we have most years, in part due to delays of things like Tears of the Kingdom and Advance Wars. That being said, some of the "not new" things actually were pretty big deals. I mean, I now feel like I actually know *something* substantial about Tears of the Kingdom - sure, it was already revealed, but a decent amount of *new* info was shown to us. I'm also content if they don't reveal too much more - they don't need to for it to sell, and not having the whole game revealed beforehand will help make the experience feel more fresh and surprising. The best part of Breath of the Wild was figuring out cool things entirely on your own, and as such, I don't want too much more gameplay revealed/spoiled. Also BotW's story trailers basically spoiled the entire story - they were super hype, but looking back at them, there wasn't much more story in the game that wasn't in those trailers. Also, some things that seemed minor/some people didn't care about actually meant a lot to certain people and communities. The Xenoblade 3 Story DLC reveal was *absolutely* the highlight of the direct for me - I was absolutely losing my mind and still am. Not every direct needs to be filled with Marios and Zeldas - giving other series the chance to shine is healthy, and I'd expect bigger reveals for 2023 to come somewhere between June and September since we don't know too much about the second half of the year while we already knew most of what was coming out the first half of this year.

It’s also wild to me that because Mario, Zelda, Pokémon and Animal Crossing are series that sell 20, 30, 40 million then Metroid and Pikmin that sell 2-3 million are seen as failures is so bizarre to me. Look at other companies like Sony/Microsoft selling 4-5 million is usually a big deal.

If there was one thing that Arlo missed about the Birdo comment, it was the fact that Birdo coming to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe confirms that characters now have a chance to come back in DLC I think there’s HUGE value in an announcement that holds POTENTIAL like that, even if Birdo is pretty meh overall. ^^

What potential? It's mostly just cosmetic, new characters don't change the game, the gameplay is still the same. In Smash they all play different, but in Mario Kart it's just a weight difference und you mostly see them only from the back...new tracks are way more important and interesting imo. New characters are fine and a nice extra though.

I really love this series, Spicy Take Salad. Im a little afraid you only plan on doing one any time there’s something new and relevant to get spicy takes on. I really think it would do well even if you just asked about things that aren’t new, like console wars, opinions on games or companys, or even just the open-ended themed like the first one you put out. I know a guy who’s favorite era for Mario was on the GBA. I also know a guy who thinks Metroid Prime is too close to Halo. I know a guy who litteraly wishes Nintendo was bought by Disney lol. There’s alott out there to generate from an idea like this, and because it’s controversial it’s emediately interesting and will still perform well. I think you got a hit here, and I think we’d all enjoy more :)

I feel the very first one about the dog in Pikmin 4: personally I would have been WAY more excited about the idea of a "mount" in Pikmin if they just let you _tame ANYTHING._ Imagine if every creature had certain requirements you could fulfill to tame them- imagine taming a Dweevil or a Long Legs and skittering or STOMPING around, having to tame different creatures to solve puzzles, needing to tame and "capture" a specimen in order to have them appear in your Piklopedia, it would be so COOOOOOOOL

So about that Mario Kart take. If you're like me, we Mario Kart fans have been waiting for almost a decade for a new Mario Kart that's not MK Tour to release. Birdo coming essentially means characters are confirmed for the DLC. So, while I might not be overly excited about Birdo specifically, I popped off once I saw her because it meant we could see characters like Diddy, Kamek, and even Pauline become playable in MK8D! And yes, I too got more excited over it than anything TOTK related, but that's just because it's not my kind of game.

I've said this before, but personally, my only issue with Metroid's shadow drop is that it forced me to choose between dropping whatever I was currently playing to get it or putting off getting it (which was really hard because I was so excited for it). I just wanted maybe a month in advance to prepare for its launch. Otherwise, it's a fantastic remaster for a reasonable price and didn't overly draw out its marketing cycle by announcing it months and months ahead of time, so I'm happy about that at least

I wanted to see more of Zelda and I agree with your score. When we were about a year out from BotW Nintendo was giving really long gameplay vids diving into the mechanics, the world, the story everything. Here are 3 months from the sequel and they’ve said basically nothing at all about the game.

Honestly, I kinda get where the birdo guy was coming from. I mean, I personally couldn't care less about characters for Mario kart 8, but at least it's confirmation that the game will likely keep getting new characters which is a big thing for the large group of people still waiting for Mario Kart 9. Zelda on the other hand has been so reluctant to show basically anything of substance. It's been a little tease here, a little drip feed there but you have said it yourself; they STILL haven't shown the _Reveal_ . You know, where we finally learn what the game is all about, what brand new concepts are in the game, what the central hook is, a look at new locations, etc. All of the trailers so far only really amount to little tidbits of mostly inconsequential stuff. Just more teasing essentially. It kinda gets old and it's hard to get excited about yet another teaser.

One other thing to consider regarding Metroid and Pikmin not being "big IPs" - the Switch releases, Dread and Pikmin 3 Deluxe, are the best-selling games for either franchise. It's not Mario/Zelda/Pokemon numbers, but enough that Nintendo knows fans are hungry for more, and using them as headlines can definitely generate more interest.

Ok the layton thing is rather simple for me to explain. I never expected to ever have any new layton games bc after aslan i couldve sworn level 5 said they told the story they wanted to tell. So going out and going SIKE like 10 years later got me excited a lot. They gave me a heads up for "hey this ip aint as dead as you thought!"

So glad this is still a thing! Personally, I like Oatchi. I was wary at first, but I think it'll add a new layer to gameplay (especially if the control scheme is simpler in this game). My only worry is that blue pikmin might go the way of purples and become a bit obsolete. Only time will tell, I suppose.
