This truck is tough! 427 cubes, 10 wheels, and huge! It is tailor-made for the end of the world, but it hasn't run in 26 years!

Cool! Old-school rigid truck from the times when cars been made by engineers not by marketing staff. Can't believe how easy it started after 26 years. Trust it will be road worth soon with your help! Great Job done!

Right on David. The mechanics must have disliked seeing these trucks roll into the shop. Luckily, the radiator was out so I could sit in the engine bay. I am not sure what I would have done otherwise.

A truck just like this was used when my parents built their new house in 2005! It is a beast! That 5th gear is what they used to operate the power take off to do the drilling. Their hole didn't even go 25 feet before it started caving in! It was used to drill and set the well wall! It should have rear outriggers on it so they could set it up off the ground. The power take off is also heavy duty. They had to make sure the power take off to was not engaged or it would be hard to start.

We stocked cylinder heads, jug and piston sets and had line bored blocks and cranks on the shelf. So no matter what we ran into we had the parts on hand. I really miss those days in the garage! There are so many parts available for the VW bugs that you can practically build an entire bug from aftermarket parts. There would be no need to convert 3 into 1 when you could simply build all three and put the three of them back on the road for someone to enjoy.

The twin screws have what's called a power divider in the front diff which is actually a differential and it's engaged with air pressure. In the unlocked mode the power can go to either axle, not just the rear, it's called the path of least resistance. But when locked, it ties the 2 together. So if you would have had air, even with that rear drive line unhooked you could have moved it.

Just some info for you. If a truck has air brakes, you have to apply air pressure to release the brakes. The brakes are spring activated and require air to release the springs. Secondly, the front drive axle is the main drive axle, and when you switch the locker on it applies power to the rear axle. You probably fried the clutch by trying to move the truck with the brakes applied
@whattherust

Thanks for the info. I am hearing different views on which axle is the main. I need to check the shop manual I have. The clutch is good. I didn't leave it engaged.

Many years ago I decided to get a Heavier Truck .. No I'm not in any business that would require me to have one , However of my 7 brothers 4 of them each have a different trade .. As such being the youngest brother , I was expected to help them out when out of school & sometimes weekends an most Holidays. Thing is my profession keeps me behind a desk an always loved working with them. When I built my house for my new family All of my brothers an there good friends pitched in to see it to its final built state. I really wore out my old 67' C-10 an went through a few transmissions an two rear ends. .. I finally parked it ten years ago An my Eldest son wanted it. The rebuilding process had him so delighted he became a certified mechanic an has his own business now. He still has the truck to this day! However thru the years I've gotten restless an decided to get a Heavier Truck. The truck in this Vid is Near what I'm looking for. I'm not in for a complete restoration but I know I could do it. Money isnt the problem. Its time. Hopefully I just might come accross something like this Old Chev truck .. I dont have the expertise to transfer the Cab & front end of this truck over to a newer Frame of say ... A Suburban .. I do know of an have cousins that do it for A living as they own a Body shop .. Again its time. I'm not the kind to let someone else do the work I can do. I May not have there knowledge but with proper coaching I could do it. As Far as the Old V-Dubs , By all means would be nice if you could do one of them up not just to road worthy but A Resto. There not as expensive as my Project an am sure the Vids from it could bring in many VW fans .. I still have my ol 72' Bug I courted my deceased wife with .. She loved my Bug thats why I'LL never sell it. I might give it to my youngest daughter as she is a VW fan an has a cabriolet .. Take care 👋

@whattherust As I'm not an avid fan of ANY Brand , whatever I can find that suits my needs that'll do. Went by an older wrecking yard that hasn't done much business in recent years as the Laws here in this state are really Cranked up for tree hugging , frog loving an insect coddling folk that are in positions that have really wrecked many car/Truck enthusists an put the clamps down on manufacturers restrictions. Yes I know there's just to much liberalism that has saturated places that were meant for the peoples .. Not just one aspect of governing but true democracy maintaining our Republic not tearing it down piece by piece .. It was never meant for a few educated folk that are Detached from the Real world needs as far as its constituents an future ones. Life didn't spill over in a dime when The main mode of transportation went from horses to cars .. That being said what's still availiable to get an still accomplish my goals is the still out there. However , ain't as much as when I was a teenager but still lots of good old Iron Just waiting for new life to be breathed back into it. Have my eyes set on two so far. An old 4door Power Wagon 4wheel drive an an old Suburban.. Both have excellent qualities an minimal rust .. There not two banged up either. So once again am on a fence. Want the Truck to have power , But not the kind that'll Rip asphalt for breakfast. Am thinking of putting in a Diesel Engine in it as I do love taking my boat out for the holidays & throughout the Spring Summer seasons Its quite heavy an in dry dock now. Only makes sense to have a powerful Torque'y Engine to get it where I'd like to experience more than what's available nearby .. So there you have it. Maybe by spring of next year I'LL begin my project. Don't like working in colder weather. It pulls the fun right out of the project. Thanks for reading my long winded comment take care An GOD BLESS all Y'all 🙏

I prefer my local parts shop. I can look at the part when I buy it not as stock image on the internet. And when it’s wrong it takes even more time. I do order some parts like oil filters because I buy on sale to keep on hand. But if I need to to brakes and rotors I want the parts in my hands that day.

Hi guys. My dad had a 1975 C65 with a 427 and a 13 speed tranny. I think what you have is the dreaded 5 and 4, that is to say it has two trannys a main 5 speed with an auxiliary 4 speed which need to be shifted simultaneously at times. The running joke was that those guys held the steering wheel in their mouth while shifting. Another issue with air brakes if it has a maxi parking brake it is held on by strong coil springs in the air pots at the wheels. When the air is at full pressure it collapses the springs and releases the brakes. Since you don't have air you can't release the brakes unless you go to a truck parts store and get caging bolts to insert in the brake pots and tighten to collapse the springs and release the brakes. The bolts are cheap and the process is simple pull the rubber plug out of the center of the air pot, insert the " T " end of the bolt and turn it 90 degrees to lock it and put your impact gun on the nut and tighten thus collapsing the spring and releasing the brake. I hope this is useful and if I've over stepped my boundaries I apologize. PS Yes i am a Canadian and absolutely enjoy your show.

Hello Richard & Cristina. Surprisingly Enough, That body style was still being manufactured well into the late 1980 until the rounded cabs were introduced in the early 1990s. The highway department here in Kentucky had quite a few of these trucks, But with the 8.2 Detroit Diesel engine mostly although we also had a few of those trucks with the different gasoline engines. The transmissions were usually the 5 speed with the 2sp axle. Most if not all of the longer bed truck frames were of a single axle configuration instead of a tandem axle like the truck you are working on. Interestingly enough, The 427 tall deck engines were very desirable to the truck pulling teams who originally used the single axle 3/4 and 1 ton rear differentials and migrated to the 2 speed axles because of their durability. KY Utillities used to have a very large number of the tandem axles for their line trucks The downfall of the Detroit 8.2 engines were that they were absolutely terrible about the air compressor bolts breaking off in the cylinder heads. We were so glad to see those GM trucks go “Bye Bye” because of this recurring issue.
@whattherust
@whattherust Ай бұрын
That is great info. Thank you for taking the time to write it. I think I would have liked that truck with a Detroit Diesel in it. I remember how those engines would "bark" under acceleration.
@TheIronDuke502
@TheIronDuke502 Ай бұрын
@ We also had the Ford F-750 single axle dump trucks that also had the Detroit 8.2L engines that were basically configured much like the GM trucks with the notable exception of having the Lucas-Girling electric over hydraulic braking system in which there were no air brakes to deal with. This afternoon, I remembered after I commented before that the GM long flatbed trucks like the bridge crews used had the absolutely “Ginormous” winch which was installed just behind the cab and over top of the PTO which was roller chain driven. The end of the bed had a very heavy roller which was the same width as the truck bed which made the winch work much better for pulling heavy sections of steel or other heavy objects onto the truck bed. It was not uncommon for the crews to load the truck beds down with just about anything you could imagine to go to a job site where they would use a front end loader to offload everything from the truck. The traffic crews that used to stripe the highways also used the long GM trucks in which they would load down with the drums of the yellow and the white paint which the striping truck would pull alongside and pump whatever paint was needed. Those trucks were used quite a bit. The GM trucks that the Spray Crews used for spraying highway right of way had dump beds installed on them and usually had the large FMC spray units installed during the peak months of the year for spraying weeds on the right of way.

1973 was the first year for that body design. The ones with bus bodies were produced up through 1991 but ones with just the cab like that one there on the other hand were produced only up through 1989. 1973 was also the first year for the smaller light duty models with that cab design too. 1987 was the last year for the light duty half ton & three quarter ton plain cab pickups. Like those medium duty series models with the cab like that one there, the smaller one ton plain cab pickups were also produced up through 1989. After that, the medium duty series models with bus bodies, Suburbans, Blazers, Jimmys, & crew cab pickups were the only models left in production up through 1991.
