Oh man. You underestimate speedrunners. They would have figured out the backwards driving thing within the HOUR. Heck, non-speedrunners would have just done it just for kicks. Literally for Super Mario Odyssey, one of the biggest skips in the game was discovered within the day of its release and THAT was done with a complicated series of jumps where you had to trick the camera to think you were jumping off a smooth surface so you could wall jump off the side of a rough wall. 5 years for someone to figure out you had to drive backwards??? Yeah no.

The book explains why they don't just take off their visors when they are about to die. Basically their avatars would stay behind completely vulnerable, and if they die, they would have to start from scratch with a new avatar. No points, no advantage, no chance of winning the game.
@Version0111
@Version0111 6 жыл бұрын
Bla Blah no but in a PVP zone you have to wait a few minutes before you can log out your avatar to prevent people from constantly logging out every time they are about to lose a fight. It's actually the least believable thing about the Oasis. People pay real world money for their belongings in game through micro transactions, but when they die they lose everything and have to buy it all again for their new avatars. Also they have to level up from the beginning. Why would anyone ever risk losing everything by entering a PVP zone? When suddenly some level 50 jerk hiding behind a potted plant with a sniper rifle can end your life before you can even react?

On the plothole surrounding the big race at the start: I'm pretty sure they mention that while the search has been going on for five years, it was only recently that somebody discovered that this race was the first challenge. So people haven't been actually playing the race for very long.
@nicholastosoni707
@nicholastosoni707 6 жыл бұрын
Alternatively, they'd all been looking for ways to beat the race in a straightforward way (i.e. still going forward). Whether it's by finding a side route, or by going faster than ever before, or buying speed upgrades, or...whatever, the *usual* goal is to try to beat the race before King Kong shows up. *No matter what, though, the one who gets closest to the goal will always encounter King Kong.*
@redholm
@redholm 6 жыл бұрын
Exactly. I thought it was pretty well explained that it was only recently that it opened. And most people would not think of going in reverse in a race. But as Rob said it would take a year for everyone to poke and prod everything to death. Well yea, but if it's only been a few weeks or a month it ain't a year yet :P

Also I suppose that way at the back wall is oppening only if you drive at full speed backward. Who in the sane mind would do it to crash their car into a wall? As far as I understand Oasis logick, players will have to pay for their car repair.

as a gamer i 100% understand why its so important the company doesn't get control of the oasis . they would basically split the oasis into nothing but DLC make sure its totally pay to win . make sure only people who pay enough money instead of grinding to ahead, granted in the movie they show you can but products to enhance the game play experience but those are just accessories and you dont require them to play and have a fun time going against anything and everything the oasis's creator meant the game to be . The Bad gut in the film is basically every shity game dev/publisher that like to cheat gamers out of their money , they are basically EA

Have to call BS on this. The film stressed a lot on how much important money in this game both real world: better gear, faster connection and game world: weapons, life saving artifacts etc. But plot armor is thick. In reality such organization would freaking dominate the game with the rules they set. Monopoly, no way around it.

The book was fun, and the movie was fun. Though they could've gone deeper with the bigger themes like "physical beauty vs. inner beauty" and the need to actually live an actual life in the real world, but the book didn't delve all that deep into those themes either. There are a lot of video game/movie/TV show references (there's a Shining homage that is both tense and hilarious, and also hammers home Spielberg's own love of Kubrick once again), I do kinda wanna see it again just to catch more of the references.

My favorite part of the book was not in the movie which is vr education. I love the concept in the book in how they evolved education system. By putting the students and giving them a VR education you can provide them with top in the line books software and teachers from all over the world and make it entertaining at the same time. Also, the students can pick their avatars so they won't be discrimination on how to teach the students too. The book gave me hope for the VR space in the real world outside of video games. That why I like the book The movie to me fix an issue with the riddles kinda. In the book, the riddle was easy to solve because google exists. But winning the key might be hard. While in the movie the riddles and quest were more about the creator and who the creator was then pop culture reference. Which make more sense and would make it harder too.
@silverbrumbyfan
@silverbrumbyfan 6 жыл бұрын
the riddles were EASY? Are you kidding, it took them months to to solve that first riddle.
@kali2593
@kali2593 6 жыл бұрын
silverbrumbyfan it took five years to solve the first riddle. The reason why it easy to solve the book riddles is that they are pop culture information only, and with the power of the internet, you can brute force to get the answer. While the movie you needed to understand how the creator thinks. To solve the riddles. Which is harder to do.

This movie is just the definition of "FUN". I feel like even those who didn't like it as much, must have had a good time, I feel its almost impossible for this movie to be a 100% failure for anyone. Theres something for everyone in it. And that's what I love about it, because its not trying hard to be big and important, its just having fun with itself.
@tomaszwota1465
@tomaszwota1465 6 жыл бұрын
HolsovanUltimate well, it was a complete disappointment for me. From the race (a fricken bland as fuck race?) to the final battle (so much less awesome than the book), from the ommisions of some cool scenes like the meeting of Z and Artie in the Tomb of Horrors (and the visual of a Lich playing arcade machine with a lvl 3 guy in crappy armor), to... actually, I don't even want to get into it. Suffice it to say I've facepalmed so much during the movie. I eyerolled, I cringed, I couldn't get through it in one sitting. It wasn't good. Not in the beginning, not in the end, not in the middle. The only good thing about the movie was I-rok, he was a poseur gunter asshole that spilled the beans on Z and H attending school on Ludus, thus leading IOI to Wade, but was inconsequential layer on, as in, he's not on the story after that. In the movie he's at least a funny character. An almost completely different character though, so much so one could say he's pretty much a new character altogether. Other than that - a failure. I couldn't believe Spielberg made such a bad movie having a fun book as the source material.

I am dayum near 60 and I saw it with my son in his 30s. If you've loved gaming from Atari like me or started with Nintendo like my son your nerdgasism is serious. I loved the simplicity of the plot, characters and villain because that was nostalgic to me. Like that good feeling I get from Wonka, Goonies, Indiana Jones. Its classic Spielberg. Mixed with all this nostalgia makes it so endearing. I was moved by something in each act (race, Shining and final battle). I like team high 5. Thought the villain was portrayed so well from an old school perspective. I get your point on the key finding but its still a lot of fun. Loved the movie and it meant more to me seeing it with my millennial and the memories we found we can share and discuss.

@kaylaisnothere4397 6 жыл бұрын
1997residente In a historical context, we are living in a utopia compared to the atrocities back then. Sure maybe our culture has been 'warped' a bit, but we have it extremely good. I find that, even though the 80s and 90s were incredibly great decades, rosy retrospects make it seem like this era is the worst thing to happen to society.
@smiley4995
@smiley4995 6 жыл бұрын
Clbden775 I think it's not truly the past, but rather what we remember as the past. Since we were children it may seem more romanticized idea than what it actually was to the point the idea is almost as imaginary as the holograms.
@kaylaisnothere4397
@kaylaisnothere4397 6 жыл бұрын
Carter That could play into it very well, I suppose. I guess a certain perspective of that decade could shape its description, and having a childlike mentality at that age makes it seem a lot more cheery and great. I mean, a parent in the 80s wouldn't think it was so ecstatic and wonderful because they'd be focused on aspects younger kids are ignorant of. Cold War, politics, etc. Also, what we may see as kids I guess can be very frowned upon by their parents. 80's kid: I grew up playing Mario, the games nowadays utterly suck! Parent of the 80's kid: In our younger days, we didn't even have any consoles! Your generations have ruined the imaginativity of traditional toys! So on, so forth. I'm not sure if I could argue more for ignorance is bliss or nostalgia holds near and dear to us.
@smiley4995
@smiley4995 6 жыл бұрын
Clbden775 Yep, honestly this mindset keeps on repeating. I think the reason it may be more noticable for the 80-90's is how quickly media changed and the boom in movies. Sure there probably were many movies before, but those were filtered more into classics, while the others faded more into obscurity. Honestly though another thing is wanting simplicity, which is basically childhood.

One negative about the movie is that I could tell it was based on a book. There were a few points that I would have liked to be expanded on, but that just makes me want to read the book. As someone who is really into video games and old pop culture, I was enthralled by the idea that this world could be done very soon. The creator is also my favorite character. To me, it lived up to the hype. In fact, when Voltron came out, I geeked out SO hard.

*IR0CK is a character in the book, just COMPLETELY different Btw, IOI is way more evil in the book and u realize why they shouldn't win I know it's not an excuse but the reason they dont just take off their visors during the dance is addressed in the book. So the programing protects against this by keeping u in your place in the game for (i think) 30 seconds, so if u leave during the battle they can kill u. This is like a big plot point in the book with a character's death, which i was kind of dissapointed wasn't in the movie.

What really got me about the movie was the amazing visuals and especially the attention to detail. We're so used to bland Marvel movies that it's super refreshing, almost surreal seeing a movie that actually has some attention to detail and is worth a re-watch just to get all of the references. Also Mark Rylance's performance as Halliday is just amazing. It's a great popcorn flick that doesn't pretend to be the most serious film of the year which is another recurring theme in Hollywood nowadays, so strangely by being so simple it's actually refreshing and unique. Also I missed Ugandan Knuckles

Yeah, it's not as vigilant in following the book as I'd want it, not even close, but still, it's not as bad as my first reaction to it. My apologies to the average movie-goer, I may have let my then-boiling emotions speak a bit to much in this particular comment.

Haha! So true. But it is very strange for someone who went to film school, and obviously watches a lot of films, and yet is so ignorant a lot of the time (like the time he confused Robert Prosky and Art Carney in Last Action Hero).

Doug seems like the kind of person who would flaunt that he had “ADD” and not work to better himself. Sitting in a classroom, even passing, does not mean one understands or learned anything. Plus, I think it’s kind of an ego think that he just experiences the film and doesn’t need to know about it, context and history are stuffy “professional” critic things, and he’s more of a youtube laymen who appeals to the average moviegoer, those like himself, who consume popular culture like a drug and don’t really care to understand it beyond whether it’s pleasurable or not for them to consume. I don’t think he REALLY deep down in his heart considers himself a critic. I think he’s aware that it’s a new post-modern thing where he is a movie-watching avatar, “remembering it so we don’t have to”, and his ignorance only adds to his relatability and the vicarious child-like wonder we crave in our movie-watching doppelgänger. So he is proud.

Wow. That was really well written! The description of Doug that you've just laid out sounds very similar to Barton Fink. How he always tries to be a 'man of the people', while in actual fact looks down upon them. Doug also seems to lecture us in his KZbin videos about how comedy works, like he's the fucking professor of humor or something, all the while he just screams and runs about like that's genius. Bottom Line, the guys a moron, and a moron in way over his head.

My friends who read my previous posts over the last year or so know that I really had some big complaints against the book. Ernest Cline created a wonderful world, but he kinda stunk as a story teller (even when read to me by Wil Wheaton). This movie surprisingly banked only minimally on the nostalgia trip that was RPO's biggest draw, and the story was much more explorative of the dystopian world of the future. I was at no point embarrassed to bring my 7 year old with me! He was geeking out right there with me, and noticing little nods and cameos and Easter eggs throughout the whole movie. (This whole movie was as Easter egg hunt, both in explicit plot and in the meta experience of spotting all the recognizable brands and icons from pop culture). Kiddo even had the soundtrack composer pegged from the opening scenes (Al silvestri... whom he best knows from Back To The Future) Rather than simply compressing the book into a movie, this tells a *better* story, with the same characters and world. So is it 100% faithful to the book? No, and thats just fine to me. Also the book took place *mostly* in the Oasis, and would have rendered the entire movie as an animated feature if done likewise. Instead, this was done more like the Neverending Story (as I had hoped), with the main characters of the animated segments splitting the runtime with the live action through intercutting. It felt like about 50/50, though it may have leaned a bit more toward the animated segments. I'd love to talk more about the film with anyone whose seen it!

I REALLY enjoyed this movie (granted, I didn't read the book)! I and 8 of my friends (we're all college-aged) had a blast watching it last night. Plot isn't the most impressive, but the visuals were gorgeous, the action was awesome, and the references were fun to spot (like a game of Eye Spy). After the movie, we agreed it was a good film, and most of us, myself included, thought that The Shining sequence was the best part. If you're a gamer, then this is a must-see. It's probably the only movie that I actually have cheered for while watching. P.S. I don't think there are any Nintendo, Sony, or Disney-owned characters or references. Plenty of others though.

I liked the film. It's amazing in 3D. I'd describe it as an audio-visual spectacular. I've never seen CGI action sequences like it. The acting wasn't particularly good, but it wasn't bad, either. The main guy was okay, as was the bad guy. The guy who played Halliday was good. The film was absolutely packed with references to popular culture, music videos, movies, and especially videogames. Being a non-gamer who's never been in to popular culture, most of them were lost on me. I liked seeing Chucky, Freddie Kruger, Chun Li, King Kong, a Tyranosaurus Rex, the Ninja Turtles, Marty McFly's DeLorean, Batman, and an alien from the movie Alien all in one movie. Very creative work.

To be clear, I really love the book. I agree with Rob's assessment that it's maybe not supposed to be taken as seriously as some people take it, but I also like the sort of... undertone of the Net Neutrality debate (which is pretty relevant for when the book came out). But the book does sort of... drag on in places because of the way some of the stuff is presented. I suspected, even when I read it the first time, that it would make a much better movie if someone could get the rights to show all those properties.

I did enjoy the book. Mostly. But as I went through I couldn't help but notice a whole bunch of subpar nonsense that made it sort of terrible. Less a finely crafted Shakespearean tale, and more a hastily thrown together batch of fanfiction. But even fanfiction can elicit mirth.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Morty. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer’s head. There’s also Rick’s nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they’re not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Rick & Morty truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the humour in Rick’s existential catchphrase “Wubba Lubba Dub Dub,” which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev’s Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Dan Harmon’s genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂 And yes, by the way, i DO have a Rick & Morty tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It’s for the ladies’ eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they’re within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid 😎

Sometimes you want to go to the flicks for the experience... for fun, to immerse yourself in a world that's far removed from your reality... Sometimes you don't want to be mentally stretched, or feel you have to forensically examine every single plot point or story beats. This, along with The Greatest Showman are 2 great examples of just pure entertainment.. It's great fun, it's literally takes you away from 'reality' and it ticks along at a very good pace. It looks great, has a decent score, and you come out having 'experienced' something exciting. Mark Rylance is by far the stand out performance.

Rob this was also my issue with the book. The way gamers of today are, they would have found every easter egg in the Oasis in like a month. I don't know what reality the book took place in, but the author doesn't know shit about gaming culture and how thorough it is. So that's why the initial premise of the book was stupid. Then the rest of the book is just Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory with 80s pop culture references as the cherry on top.

Just to further explain since I understand you’ve missed my entire meaning. Any major game launched, especially MMOs, there are leagues of players that will spend hours upon hours finding every nook and cranny in a game. People even datamine games to find hidden things written with the game’s code so everything that might be locked behind a content wall can be given a preview to gamers. Now your probably saying, “This is the future, game companies have probably been hip to that so they would adapt.” But in that same logic gamers would adapt to whatever changes a company makes. Which is why there is a large venue of player created content and mods for games out now. RPO kind of ignores that part of the gaming culture. Either the author wasn’t aware of it. Or simply didn’t care to actually consider it when he created this novel.

Brandon Jones How is that logical? How would your hypothetical legions of basement dwellers ever get their hands on the Oasis source code? It's not running on their home computers. All they have is essentially fancy monitors and controllers. You going to hack the most sophisticated technology ever with your Xbox 360 usb controller? AND EVEN IF THEY COULD you don't think the smartest man on the fucking planet might just be able to keep them from finding the code for something he WANTED TO BE HIDDEN? THAT WAS THE LITERAL KEYS TO THE FUTURE OF HIS LIFE WORK?! This isn't some WoW expansion mob sprite, IT'S A CHALLENGE. I don't give two shits if you don't like the book but at least dislike it for faults it actually has.
