Shazam! is a 2019 American superhero film based on the DC Comics character of the same name. Produced by New Line Cinema and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, it is the seventh installment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). Directed by David F. Sandberg from a screenplay by Henry Gayden, and a story by Gayden and Darren Lemke, the film stars Asher Angel as Billy Batson, a teenage boy who can transform into an adult superhero, played by Zachary Levi. Mark Strong, Jack Dylan Grazer, and Djimon Hounsou also star.

Definitely that. That part was actually a major change from the comics. I apologize for any potential spoilers for Aquaman 2 but Arthur's father died before he even became Aquaman and he and Atlana never got to meet again. It's one of those cases where I'm completely fine with the movies deviating from the comics, because it gave something that we not only wanted to see, but could even be argued is better than what's in the comics. I was so happy for them at the end. Plus this makes Arthur one of the few/only movie superheroes with both of his parents still alive (though I imagine Black Manta will have something to say about that).

I love that Mark Strong doesn’t give up on DC. He gave his best in Green Lantern and was the only redeeming quality of that movie. Now as Dr. Sivana, he gave us one of the best villains in the DCEU, alongside Zod.

Loved the film. I lived in a foster home and was in and out of shelter for about a year-and-a-half in the mid 80s and loved the portrayal of the foster parents. The only issue I had was with those bullies. I was bullied in middle school and high school but if there was a teacher there, they sure as hell would have put a stop to that shit

I have to agree that 'Shazam' was a great. It does feel like a lost 80's kids movie where you had more dark, gritty, and sleazy moments to balance out the more kid friendly moments, and it works REALLY well. Plus, the movie has ALOT of heart. It's every bit as optimistic, and hopeful as 'Man Of Steel' was dark, and dreary.

*Fun Fact* Shazam originally belonged to someone else and got even more popular than Superman. DC couldn't stand it. So they found some excuse to take the authors to court and through biurocracy they stole the rights to Shazam which at the time was called Captain Marvel.

I found it odd that a few reviews complained about the length of the movie, saying it was a little too long. But when I saw it, I didn't feel like I'd been watching a film for a little over 2 hours, and I always think its a good thing when you DON'T feel like you have been sat in one spot for ages. It was one of those cases where it never felt like a particular part was dragging on for too long.

I really enjoyed this film. That said, my nitpick is that grown-up Shazam behaved younger and differently than the young actor. I liked the beginning of the film and family aspects the most. Again, the entire film is very good. It isn't formulaic and it's smart. That puts it above 95% of other films. It's also funny... but the best bit is that it feels honest.

Spoilers!! I liked that Mr. Mind didn't just come out of nowhere. Early on he's in this glass container/habitat at the Rock of Eternity ane then LATER you see the same container, broken and missing Mr. Mind. I thought that was neat! Little things here and there was fun to see!

What I love about these recent stand alone DC films (Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and now Shazam!), is that I'm starting to notice a formula the same way Marvel has a formula, but what I love is that it's definitely it's own formula that doesn't copy Marvel! - There's always a flashback to childhood, usually involving their parents. Even this movie had it and the main character's a kid! - The main character will always learn about the value of humanity. - The character will have their logo on their belt. Just a little fun detail. - The villain will have parallel backstories, and often come from the same place the hero gained their powers - The hero will have a partner to help them on their journey (Wonder Woman had Steve, Aquaman had Mera, Shazam had Freddy) - That partner will come with their own side characters that you come to care about, proving that humanity is worth it (Wonder Woman had the group of soldiers, Shazam had the orphans) - The climax will have a one on one battle with the hero and villain, while the side characters are fighting their own battles - The dark stuff WORKS because THERE ARE CONSEQUENCES TO IT! You can have a dark DC film, you just don't make the hero the darkest thing about it. You can apply this to most DC properties, but like Marvel, are allowed breathing room to experiment, fit these pieces in different ways, and create different experiences with each film.

In case you guys don't pay attention to the updates on shazam they are working on a sequel it's just first they are gonna work in Dwayne the rock Johnson in his own dc movie called black Adam so he can be set as a future antagonist against shazam or the justice league according to rumors. So yeah a shazam sequel is definitely coming

God Rob is such a stuck up snob, the reason Dc was failing until now is because they were rushing their cinematic universe. They weren't taking time to really establish characters, THAT'S what Marvel did. Regardless of tone they got you to care about their heroes, enough to where you want to see them together and interacting. Dc's taking their time now and look they have an established Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and Shazam and all three have had positive reception. If they keep on this track they CAN have a successful Justice Leauge movie.

​@@darkstar4341 This has been an issue of mine with Rob for years, he thinks his opinions are the right ones and doesn't even try to hide it. The reason DC was failing not because they tried their own cinematic universe, but for all the reasons I stated. They picked the wrong guy to helm it, they tried to rush the team ups without establishing the characters properly. The characters they did focus on only one actually had a good connection with the audience and that was Wonder Woman. I don't care if Rob doesn't like the idea of a cinematic universe. My issue is how he clearly thinks his opinions are fact and that Dc should just never have tried it in the first place. I want to look forward to a Justice league the same way I am for Avengers, I don't want DC to give up on that especially now that their starting to bounce back. I want to see Shazam and Aquaman interacting now. I love crossovers and the fact that marvel inspired this is something I really like and don't want it to change.

I really liked this movie. After I saw it, I had my problems and would give it 8/10. Now, I keep thinking of some brilliant moments and want to see it again. That's what a good film does; it stays with you.

I agree! I dont usually watch campyish superhero movies, but I gave this one a shot because I heard it's quite good, and I was surprised by how much I liked it! Of course it has some flaws like how the beginning was exposition heavy and rushed, but I understand that they rushed past it to get to the true heart to the film. I was surprised by how endearing the characters and their character arcs actually are, and I had a lot of fun because this movie really embraced what it was and somehow made this ridiculous premise work quite well. Overall I would give this an 8/10 to acknowledge those flaws, but I really adore it and it's actually become one of my personal favorite films!

I just saw Shazam and it was better than I expected (which I had high expectations already). The lighter tone may be a step in the right direction, break away from the dark, gritty tone of the previous DCEU films. Basically, it's about a teen boy getting powers that turn him into a grown man and has to quickly master said powers to fight a baddie....

Seeing as how John Glover was once again taking on the role of the father of a bald rich billionaire that was seen as a disappointment within the company, the whole ordeal with flying may have been an homage to Tom Welling's Superman in Smallville, which was a power that wasn't fully learned until the very last episode of the series
